Resizing partitions in Win XP with Pointsec installed

    Locked

    by michael jay ·

    Is this possible?

The nearest answer I have found is to decrypt and uninstall Pointsec, resize partitions then reinstall Pointsec and re-crypt.

This is rather time consuming, and while the point does not come up too often it would be nice to just resize the partition and be done with it.

With Vista the disk manager permits you to resize partitions on the fly, even with Pointsec installed.

    Any thoughts on this.

If that is the case, all resizing is doing is adjusting the address. This does not seem to me to be a breach of the security.

Someone must have a resize program that will fly under Pointsec on an XP PC. Vista partition resize works with Pointsec.

In the past, do not have V.8, before I spend the bucks I would like to know if it can do Pointsec.

An older version of Partition Magic does not work, Ubuntu 8.10 does not even see the partitions, Ubuntu 9.04 sees the partitions but cannot resize, XP pc comes up unbootable.

As for stealth mode, I do not know. I can never tell when Boxie is on line till she posts. You mean that I am invisible as well?

      I think that

      by rob miners ·

In reply to Resizing partitions in Win XP with Pointsec installed

Partition Magic is actually invoked from the autocheck autochk * feature when resizing a drive. It adds its commands and runs before the OS is restarted. I really hope that it works out OK for you. 😀

this is not something that comes up every day, but from time to time it would be so nice to just resize partitions with out any problems.

To decrypt a Pointsec pc of about 100 gig takes about 5 hours, my typical solution is to reimage, about 3 hours with data.

Would indeed be cool to have a quicker solution.

edit to fix a size issue, meg or gig?

I almost forgot that PM8 has been replaced with this.

Edit: with PM8 you could create a couple of boot disks. I don’t know if this will allow it but if it does you will be in an environment prior to the OS. Whether it will see it is another thing.

          OK

          by rob miners ·

In reply to No That did not work

If you can do it with Vista you can try this on a test System. Use a Vista DVD or download and create this Recovery CD you will be able to use Diskpart to manipulate your Partitions. Follow the directions below and you should be good to go.

The Windows Vista Recovery CD can be used to Boot your PC. Check your BIOS settings to make sure that you are booting from the CD first.

Creating a Windows Vista Recovery CD

          http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=622

          Download from here:

          http://coblitz.codeen.org/neosmart.net/downloads/guides/Vista_Repair/Vista_Recovery_Disc_x86.iso

Boot from the CD and on the first screen click Next, click Repair your computer, click Next and select Command Prompt.

Type in DISKPART and press Enter. This opens the Microsoft DiskPart application. You need to select the active disk, so type in:

          list disk

The primary disk is generally Disk 0, so type in:

          select disk 0

Now we need a list of volumes on this disk, so type in:

          list volume

In this case Volume 0 is the one we want, so type in:

          select volume 0

          select part 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition

          Now type in:

          shrink

DiskPart will go off and reclaim as much of the drive as it can ? you should get at least 50% of the space back.

          Now type

          EXIT

          Edit: missed a command

Did not try that, broken link

          by michael jay ·

          In reply to OK

but I do not believe that it will work as you are booting the machine without getting to Windows, only in Windows will you have access to the drive. And that is why Vista disk manager can resize partitions.

Looking thru the documentation as this hard head should have done first I read this:

Resizing partitions ? Never use any disk-partition editing software
with Full Disk Encryption installed on the workstation. If you need to
resize a partition, remove Full Disk Encryption first, and then resize
          the partition.

So to continue to be hard headed, is it possible to get the Vista disk manager on XP as it can resize partitions on the fly without a reboot.

Guess I should start that as a new Question.

Or just give up on this idea.

        • #2950907

          To be honest

          by rob miners ·

In reply to Did not try that, broken link

I would be removing the Encryption before resizing the Partition.
Diskpart in XP is 160K 14-4-2008 and in Vista it is 129K and 13-12-2008. I really doubt that it would work swapping them over. Having said that there is nothing stopping you from trying it. LOL
