Reverting from XP to 98

By Glen6490 ·
I was able to come across a good deal on getting a Dell laptop. Although it has a Pentium II chip, I wanted to use it when away from home. I'm tight on money now, so I'm not in a position to buy a new one. I guess I could use my Compaq 286 DOS brick, but that's too outdated and I haven't used it for a few years (a museum piece, maybe).

A "friend" techie of mine (we all have them-or are one), thought he was doing me "a favor" and loaded XP Professional on the Dell. You guessed it, the laptop takes five minutes just to boot up and runs as slow as molasses in the winter. I have copied the files I want to save to a Zip disk, and want to start all over and reload the Win98 operating system. I have a bootable and SE disks.

I am not too technical, although, as an end user, I have been playing with computers for over 20 years, but would like to wipe the hard drive clean and start over again. What are my options in doing this? --Glen

Forget Windows, try Linux, unlike Windows, Linux can be modern but still run old older systems. Try

For Windows 98, you need to delete all existing partitions (use Ranish Partition manager) and create an new C: FAT32 patition and install Windows.

Stick to your Linux and stop proposing solutions that only augment the problem.

Windows XP can be uninstalled to revert back to Win98...

only if the C drive wasn't converted to NTFS during an inplace upgrade and is still formatted with FAT32. One way to try this is to go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall Windows XP. If it proceeds, XP will be uninstalled and you will be back at Windows 98.

On the other hand, if your so called not so technical "friend" did a new install and blew away the old FAT32 partition that Win98 was on, then there is no way to revert back other than do a complete reinstall of Win98, losing all the data you have on the hard disk, so please backup to a ZIP disk or CDROM as you are doing.

You're on the right track, but try to see if you can uninstall XP using the above method I suggest.
