RNAAPP & internet troubles

By firesheep43 ·
Win 98, SE, custom built box, AMD K6 - very clean machine (yup - used by 72 year old lady just for e-mail and solitaire.....). Original complaint was that PC hangs - freezes cold, after 22 minutes (EXACTLY) on the internet. Occasionally also during solitaire. Hdw diag & burn in reveals nothing noteable. Have completely striped TCP/IP & DUN (files, registry entries, etc see MS Q181599)and reloaded from clean CD, removed modem, drivers, modem software, booted clean, reinstalled with new drivers, updated drivers for vid card, sound card, installed all patches & etc. At the shop, PC ran flawlessly, on internet for 2 days - no hangups. Returned to customer - BAM 22 minutes, pull the plug. Tried monitor, keyb, mouse & UPS from shop on site - same - BAM, 22 minnutes, pull plug. Tested power at site, ok - not even 1v variation over 10 min, phone co & I spent 4 hours - line ok, runs fine, laptop and demo desktop do not lock, no interference from other equip, lights, microwaves, etc. Only noteable item is RNAAPP. At site, I tried running PC with startup items removed from MSCONFIG, though I did this at the shop (standard practice), at site - the machine would hang at the desktop with startup items removed - ctl-alt-del showed Explorer & RNAAPP running. Restored startup items, PC boots ok but RNAAPP runs, ctl-alt-del, kill RNAAPP, within 5 seconds, it returns. Yet modem still dials out. ?! After disconnect, RNAAPP still runs and hangs PC at shutdown. Am I flustered? Uh, well - yeah. Returned the machine to the shop - it runs ok. I am baffled as the problem should not be site specific. What do you all think and how do you control RNAAPP?

RNAAPP & internet troubles

I know your pain. I have battled the rnaapp problems in the past and they are not fun.

The item that has given the must success is to install either the ISDN Accelerator pack or DUN 1.4 update (includes the ISDN pack) from Microsofts site, whichboth address this problem.

RNAAPP is a dialer helper application which ends up causing more trouble than it's worth. It is set to stay resident in memory for 15 minutes after connecting to your ISP, then is supposed to unload itself. This is where it usually hanges. I was told by MS that it is typically caused by the modem driver.

I've fixed this basically two ways, by removing the modem drivers and all of TCP/IP and DUN and reinstalling everything in different orders. Secondly, the above mentioned DUN 1.4 update has also fixed a few, this update includes a new version of RNAAPP.

It's not an easy one to get by. Good luck!

PS. Here is a website basically listing similar information. Sticking rnaapp into a search engine will give you an idea of how common, yet painful, this problem is.

PS. Fixed in win2k.. hint hint..

RNAAPP & internet troubles

Well, I was looing in all the wrong places and RNAAPP was not the culprit! This will sound hokey, but here is the final deal: Tested hardware (12 hour burn-in), did everything imaginable, even reloaded Win98SE clean. Machine works great at the shop, dies at the customer's site. It finally (weeks and weeks later) occured to me the only difference between the shop and the site is that the box was on its side, cover removed at the shop, but upright and cover on at the site. So I took the cover off, laid it down, and -poof- the trouble went away. Put the cover back on and it still ran fine. Suspect bad processor socket, tried reseating it and every other component, but made no difference. Go figure - the customer is happy with their PClaying on its side for now, but the CD-ROM sure is a pain! BTW - I did run the burn in on the hardware with the box in the upright position and it still passed clean. Damn PCs.
