3D Web browsing – Bring it on!

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

This gets me excited: 3D Web Browsing from a Japanese software company called NTT

I remember when VRML made it’s debut, didn’t last long. Most of the technology seemed to just die a death. So now, i’m glad to read about a Japanese firm taking the bold step of actually releasing something with 3D and Web Browser in the title. This may get those companies that are sitting on great ideas to create great products.

Remember Minority Report? Imagine doing that with a few hundred Site servers and hundreds of thousands of clients .. reach out, pull in, tweak and twiddle …. awww nice.

Anyone from the UK interested in setting up a study group or even a user group (one already exist?) with me?

We have healthy examples of how to go about this, and examples of content from our USA\Canadian\non-UK counterparts.

SMS2003 and Publishing data to the A/D

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

I wrote this article up one night recently.

Its one of many ways to skin the proverbial cat, and get SMS2003 publishing to the A/D with SMS2003 creating the Systems Management A/D container for completeness.

It’s a community document, for the community. But feel free to punch holes, throw mud, put me in the stocks (i could kinda like that) if you find anything wrong with it (But most important fire me an email if it needs additions\corrections ;-).

      Enjoy folks,

      Dead HDDS

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

I woke up, came down like a proper little geek and powered on my machine. Few minutes later my mate who i’m living with at the moment came down and did the same, sigh geeks. Coffee, computer, news, real life. Few moments later he realises his IBM 120GXP PATA (C:) is truely dead. You know those moments where you stare in to the distance and silently scream? lol

He’s up a level in terms of geekness compared to me, rob the brave, and as a result he keeps most if not all of his personal data on a network share (which sits on disks which are mirrored) so all is not lost. Just the grief of rebuilding the OS, customising it, settling in ALL those applications and getting it “just right”.

I mitigate a HDD failure by using Volume Mount Points. Not many people use them or even know about them. My C: drive is pretty much spread across several disks so if I lost my C: drive i’d only loose Windows\Documents and Settings and Program Files and anything lingering around on the root. Everything else is spread around 3 other disks but mounted on to folders on the C: drive.

I know I know, DLT, Mirrors, backup to CDROM\DVD … I should at least have a backup strategy, but working inside a corporate for just short of a decade I felt I needed to live dangerously at home. Rob the brave 😉

Expect a post from me soon whining about my dead disks … lol

Ecstatic about this … I love SMS2003, and i’ll be working with the little beauty again. Who could possibly ask for more?!

      Why I blog …

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

      Why do I blog …

Well, more to the point, who am I?

I’m an english computer engineer, in my mid-thirties currently living in Hampshire. A totally natural born computer geek.

A truncated run through my life would be … started with a Sinclair ZX80 as a 12yr old, lucky me, and learnt its’ equivilient of BASIC from troubleshooting program listings in the weekly Sinclair specific magazines. Next up was the Sinclair Spectrum and more debugging and programming. Those where the days, a 64k game took half an hour to load lol. Then skipped to the Commodore 64 (eek) and ultimately arrived at the Commodore Amiga 500. What a beast, linear address range (cor), it had a custom gfx chipset (Blitter) way before GPU was uttered by the chaps and chapettes at Nvidia and just rocked. Spent a long time coding 68000 Assembler language on that platform, and enjoyed every minute of it. Then was given a 286 by a friend and dropped the amiga in favour of Microsoft DOS and Turbo Pascal. And then my plans to develop an evil empire where set in motion, I changed my name to Bill Gates and … ooops no that’s not right … Jumping forward several years the fun really started, and I got my first computing job supporting 15 users and a Novell 3.12 server which I managed to replace with Windows NT 4 (hoorah?). Then tried a rollout job deploying Windows 9x in a pharmaceutical company. That led in to a Desktop Engineering role for another pharmaceutical for a few years before I took the natural progression in to the server space within the same company. After just under 9 years of soaking up all that I could in both spaces, and getting tired of the scene, I moved in to a small group, still within the same company, as a contractor, managing SMS2003 for the EMEA region. That was probably one of the best decisions i’ve made in a long time. Such fun, the team was cool, the manager was cool, the technology was cool! the budget ran out, thus so did the job. Another bombshell arrived, me and the wife split up so I decided to move closer to London. Practically ten years as a contractor in the same company, thats rare 🙂

I’ve dabbled with so much in the past, tried my hand at being a commercial game developer (nothing got published, did say tried), goofed around with tons of products and oddities, that I feel I have a satisified mind. I also count myself lucky in that I just enjoy playing with computers. Others switch their office PC off at night and that’s it until the morning. Not me, I’m straight on my PC when I get home, either gaming (i’m an FPS fiend!) or soaking something or other up. Just like now, been for an interview today and after making a cup of nice english tea i’m straight on the computer. What a geek lol. So, that is essentially me. Eager to learn new stuff out of curiosity rather than planning a career track, friendly, and always on a natural high. One of the sweetest women I know recently said “you are so funny, and great company to be around”. Yeah thats me.

      So why do I blog?

I like sharing. Period. I try to keep in the spirit of my current technological focus, but It doesn’t matter to me. If it’s technical or non-technical, if it interests me then I blog about it. I hope that my posts interest at least some of you, and now that i’m blogging on the best Systems Management website, MyITForum Inc I feel even more fortunate.

Here’s to many more wild and whacky, as well as serious, and technically tedious postings 😉

Thanks Rod for creating this fine cradle to grow in 🙂

      Word lookup

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Now and then I stumble in to a word I don’t know, quick trip to http://www.dictionary.com and i’m enlightened. So, I wrote this simple script, tucked it away on the filesystem and shortcutted it to my start menu … for instant access I added a keyboard shortcut.

      —–

      Dim TheWord, objShell

TheWord = inputbox(“Enter the word you want to lookup”)

      If TheWord <> “” Then

       Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”)

‘ Edit the path if you’ve installed away from the default area, or are using a non-ie browser

       objShell.Run “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Iexplore.exe http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=” & TheWord

       Set objShell = Nothing
       Set TheWord = Nothing

      End If

      First virtual mugging

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

      Sourced from Slashdot:

electro-donkey writes “A man has been arrested in Japan after on suspicion using a bot to beat up and rob characters in the online computer game Lineage II. The stolen virtual possessions were then exchanged for real cash, according to this report from NewScienist.com. “I regularly say that every form of theft and fraud in the real world will eventually be duplicated in cyberspace,” says Bruce Schneier.”

Keep your virtual wallet tucked away guys, nothings safe anymore!

“I was walking down the path in to the town of Dereth, taking in the ambience of the trees of K’luth when this dodgy looking fellow with a big bag with “SWAG” written on it walked up to me. Before I new it half my Inventory disappeared, I was on the floor, and I realsed my Mace of Holy Smiting was gone.”

      The Office

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

You guys in america watching The Office, well you owe it to yourself to get hold of the original UK version with Ricky Gervais. Ignore all that twaddle about “Americans just not getting it”, the shows awesomely universal. Your nerves feel red raw, your face aches from laughing, it is the essence of office life :>

Not that I’m knocking the remake for american consumption, i’ve not seen it, but the original actors are so funny, well … it’d be like redoing Faulty Towers where you’d loose the punchyness from the original actors john cleese and connie booth.

Classic movies to curl up on the sofa and watch

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Watched a classic movie last night, The Sting. Paul Newman with his twinkly blue eyes, a very young Robert Redford and Robert Shaw (who played Quint in Jaws) … really enjoyed it.

I expect Hollywood to reinvent\redo this movie soon … let’s hope they don’t ruin it like they did War of the Worlds and the recent slew of remakes that they just keep pouring out

      Got any classics you like?

I’m hoping to get a few classics together to watch over the Xmas break, put up your list or email it to me 😉

There’s this girl, she just so fine she blows my mind. She’s one of the best A/D admins and is a rare geek-girl that likes the finer things in life. How attractive and appealing these attributes are indeed.

Now she’s thinking of giving up IT and doing something completely different for a few years. Such a bold step isn’t it.

Well, she is thinking of taking a physio degree or working towards it over the coming years. Does anyone have friends that have taken this path and can they get in touch with me to help with advice for Tereza?

      MP3 Player

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Been a while since I had treat-money, and I was payrolled yesterday … so here’s my new toy:

      Creative ZEN Touch 40GB

      http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=10274

40GB of storage, wow. I don’t even have that much music on my HDD, but I can grow in to it 😉

I was thinking of getting an I-Pod, but not impressed with their approach to locking the customer in to I-Tunes (have I got this wrong?) and only having a 20GB HDD. I see HMV are opening an online music store, and their prices seem better than I-Tunes so will probably sign up to them soon.

Also bought these just to wrap the whole package off:

      Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia Headphones

      http://ecoustics.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=893309

Every work day I sit on the train and hear the high notes of someones MP3 player, so I bought these earbud fones so no one can hear me and I get the best sound quality.

I’m well happy so far 😉 Stay Tuned

Moral of the story, choose wisely whether to use email to convey a message to some people, in case it all goes pear-shaped.

      My Weekend …

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Another weekend of fun to blog out :>

This time, met up with a nice lady early evening and and we headed to Brighton to wrap up Saturday night.

We liked living the moment, and just turning up at places rather than planning things ahead. So, we just walked from one hotel to another until we found a good room for the night for £95 at the Belgrave. It overlooks the seafront, with a lovely view of the sea and nightlife passing by underneath us.

Then we walked about checking out the restaurants until we found one that took our fancy. Ended up at a small place tucked away off the main stretch of Brighton seafront, and had a seriously nice three course meal for £6.99. It started with an awesome Prawn cocktail of epic proportions, then a big main meal, finally wrapped up with several dollops of ice-cream and chocolate sauce! Yummy!

The wine was £15 with the entire meal coming in at £30, what a bargain! Then we headed to a nightclub called the Honey Club for some Funky\Hard house music and stayed till 3am. Our feet and ears where tingling so much when we came out, awesome, and we couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel with was literally 400 yards away from the club. That wrapped up the Saturday night and Sunday we drove down to Chichester and Arundel, spent a few hours walking about, had a light picnic and came home.

Was nice, had a great time again just relaxing. Only took a good nights sleep to recover 😉

      London Transport Police

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Yesterday was the wrap up of a pretty good week for me. Got some real satisfaction, closure, on several issues i’m dealing with at work.

Why the subject: London Transport Police?

Well I was stopped at Tower Hill for a bag search … I’m 6″ 1′, white and generally harmless looking 😉 Not that by saying “i’m white” i expect some special treatment, but come on, let us be honest here. No whites have blown up buses and trains in the name of fundamentalism so far, not since the IRA where active a long long time ago. So, I could not for the life of me accept why they stopped me. Not as if i’m entering a concert, a festival, something where drink+hidden weapons could represent a danger. Instead I was getting ready to hit the tube to Victoria for my daily commute back home. I thought they would be stopping stereo-types that fit the mold of these nutters doing the bombings on the tube system. But obviously, they are seriously paranoid about anyone with a large bag going through the system, be they white, green or indigo. This is obviously a clear insight in to their current status of alertness regarding the bombings and how serious they are taking it. When I was released I did say good luck with your efforts and be safe. You have to feel sorry for these people working down there, never knowing if a loud boom is coming their way.

Anyways, my new music player has helped speed up my commute to and from work (no it doesn’t fold space or teleport me around!). It helps me wind down, as I do the commute back in to the boondocks. Finished Homers Illiad and now on to his Oddyseus, but since getting this music player i’ve not felt like reading. So much on my plate at the moment the music relaxes me, and helps me process the days events and put other stuff in to perspective. All good stuff.

Work is hard and fast, yeh, just the way I like it. Lots of problems to deal with, problems are opportunities as they say 😉

Craig Cerino blogged a good one, about if you enjoy things in life how you don’t mind going that extra yard. As I don’t have children yet, the most appealing thing about his words for me where his observation of how if you enjoy your work how easy it is to excel. I find that I give 110% as a matter of course. I’ve not had a job where I don’t try to do more than is needed. But I know a lot of people that don’t think that way. Not many people actually enjoy going that extra yard due to the effort it involves. I don’t think people live a complete life unless they appreciate that life’s trials and tribulations + effort = satisfaction and a contented mind.

      Bing, another non-technical blog 😉

      Geek Dinner

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Friend of mine is having a Geek Dinner in London. Any UK guys and gals on here that can make it, feel free to link up with Sarah:

      Hello people,

Just thought I would let you all know about the Developer day at the MS
campus in Reading on 22nd October.  Apparently it looks like I will be
one of the speakers at the event, you can vote for your speakers here:
      http://www.developerday.co.uk/ddd/votesessions.asp

To sign up for the Geek dinner afterwards, which will also be on the
same day in Reading in the evening go here:
      http://www.thehughpage.com/DeveloperDayGeekDinner

There will be no lectures/ talks at the Geek dinner as everyone will
probably have had enough lectures for one day, but it will be good to
get everyone together again.  Sign up and join in if you can.  If not,
try to get the word out to everyone else.  I have just set the wiki up
so it’s a bit empty at the moment.

      Thanks

      Maggie Berry from womenintechnology.

Firstly let me say a big thank you from myself, my colleagues at womenintechnology and from my colleagues at McGregor Boyall to all of you that attended the womenintechnology networking event last Thursday.

It was great to see so many of you at our first networking event – over 200 of you turned up which was superb and the people I spoke definitely thought it was a worthwhile evening so thank you for your support. From the initial feedback we received on the night and subsequently on email, there’s been a strong indication that you enjoyed being able to speak to other women working in the IT profession and that you’re keen for a follow up event.

Sounds like a great success, awesome

On a nightshift this week, just one more day left then back to the old 9-5 routine. Great. I feel like I could easily slap on some makeup and join the horde in Land of the Dead!

Anyways, Call of Duty 2 is about to be released.

      COD2 Reviews:

Download the COD2 demo from here:

MAC OSX seems to be getting some security (concerns) attention. How inevitable was this? Modded BSD Kernel under the hood, naive “all image” users (cough, that was harsh of me i know) that like to click with a single button … hmmph

Doube agreed … pay for news sites, fear them no more

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Rod Trent posted this earlier as a follow up on Johns posting about pay-for-news websites.

Those sites, they annoy me silleh.

But there is hope: http://www.bugmenot.com is quite a good site for circumventing (in a good, and healthy kind of way) these registration requests to view news.

Usual disclaimer: I do not use this website, my dog doesn’t use it. My Iron has no knowledge of this and nor do my neighbours either. NSFW and definately not condoned but worth knowing about 😉

I have a feeling in my bones that Rod is going to Chimp. Aside from the phone I don’t think he’s chimped in a while?

      Long day …

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Just got back from a day out at the Microsoft Reading campus for the UK Community Leaders meeting. Was fun meeting loads of new people, bit overwhelming trying to remember a torrent of new names and acronyms. Enjoyable though.

This was the UK Windows Management Groups first proper get together. Good to get to see the faces behind the email addresses 😉

Barcelona IT Forum 2005 is a no-go for me. Shame as I was looking forward to the content there. Such a busy day, and this week I was on night-shift so kidna out of phase with everyone else. Urgh. Early night for me me thinks.

      Kaiser Chiefs

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

Went to see the Kaiser Chiefs last night at the Brixton Academy.

The venue is not very big, so with all those people crammed in, it got very hot. Fortunately when we got outside, well the weather is still warm for this time of year, so wasn’t chilled to the bone!

Company I was with was great as usual. Was a great night, and enjoyed every minute of it!

      Portable keyboard

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

      Holy cow!

I so want one of these to try out!

If anyone can send me one, pm me so I can give you my address! I promise to do a full write-up of it using the keyboard!

If it’s responsive enough, and works in 99% of conditions, day\night then this would suit me down to the ground 😉

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is out!

And yup, as I type it’s installing it’s bloated form on to my HDD (night on 4GB of space required, wow) … i’ve got practically every star wars game ever released. One of my fav’s was Jedi Knight 2 which allowed you to weild a Saber and duel with friends, quality game for LAN parties, friggin awesome!

This release of SWBF promises to let you become a Jedi, and run around doing things with light emitting poles of death! can’t ask for anything more!

May the fork be with you

      Windows Defender

      by rob ·

In reply to Rob Marshall @ www.MyITForum.com

      from SlashDot

An anonymous reader writes “According to a report in the “Seattle Post-Intelligencer,” the Windows Defender name was already being used by an Australian developer, Adam Lyttle. His Windows Defender product protected Windows users from malicious Web sites. Adam Lyttle told the Post-Intelligencer’s Todd Bishop that Microsoft contacted him a month ago, charging him with infringing on the Windows trademark but neglecting to mention that the software giant wanted to use the “Windows Defender” name. Lyttle subsequently signed over rights to the name to Microsoft and was “shocked” when he later learned the company intended to use the name for one of its own products. “

      not pretty :<>

      Congrats Michael!

SMS2005 … Watch out, Microsoft may turn up at your door and offer you $$$ to buy that name, or issue you with a legal notice to cease and desist!

I wonder if Sophia is going to operate on a 25hr clock?

BTW I think Sophia is one of the loveliest names to choose for a girl.
