    SBS Server Internet Connection Configuration

    Locked

    Dear TechRepublic!

Ive always been a reader of this site… but here is an issue im having that some gurus may have some advice on so im posting it.

    Scenario:
MS SBS Server (30 client WIN 2K machines) that did have 2 network adapters (one going to router (dynalink rta220 and one to network switch) was causing problems in us connecting to VPN. Was using ISA server aswell (and not sure if it still is). DHCP was running on the server and router. There were no DNS issues.

    What we did:
plugged router into switch and removed it from WAN network adapater. Server was then connected to the swtich also. Appropriate IP address changes were made to the router and server. This was because previously there were 2 IP ranges being used for LAN and WAN. 192.168.1.1 for WAN and 10.0.0.1 for LAN. We enabled DHCP on the router and removed from server.

    NOW:
The Internet is EXTREMELY SLOW! Like dialup split in half! There are also minor periodic outages with access to network file shares.

The reason we removed the physical configuration with the network adapters was because VPN connectivity to a critical business application was not working.

    Feedback and comments much appreciated.

      Perhaps the lan DNS?

if i follow your post, you did not mention re-setting up any DNS on your lan. or your lan os or flavor of AD.
check out support.microsoft.com search with ‘troubleshoot dns’ for your network server os and you will see some of the symptoms of dns resolution difficulties and how to remedy them. perhaps you can judge if they sound like your symptoms

it’s in the Things to do list of Server management.

then go out and buy the Small Business Server Administrators companion book. this book will give you all the information you need to configure and maintan a SBS server.
