Scandisk & Defrag in Win98
Lockedby jchabtraining · about 23 years, 6 months ago
When I try to run scandisk or defrag on a client’s computer it comes up with the error, not enough memory to run, close some programs and try again. He had a bigger (20ghard drive put in and all his old files copied on to it. On the old drive which was a 3G, he didn’t have this problem. He can still open and run other programs without receiving any error messages. Help please!

Your client probably has too many programs running in the background. Reboot the computer, after the computer has finished loading, right click the “My Computer” icon on your desktop. Go to>Properties>Performance. Check System Resources. It should be in the high 80. I like all of mine in the mid 90’s.
To clear programs from loading on boot up.
Go to Start>Run and type in msconfig and click “OK”
Go to: Startup. Uncheck the programs that are not necessary at startup. Make sure you keep the programs involving your anti-virus etc “checked”.Uncheck: Microsoft Office Startup. Instant messager and items such as this.
Reboot the computer. Then try scandisk, defrag.
Make sure you disable screensaver, monitor turn off, hard drive turn off, standby.
Windows 98 takes a long time to defrag.
I install Nortons System Works and use their Defrag. It is faster.
Good luck

I had a similar problem. run both scandisk and then defrag from “safe mode”. partition that harddrive no larger then 8gig per. that will help speed up the system again.

Two other programs to run if the Windows defrag is too slow. There is a program out called Diskeeper that works well. It’s also available for Win98/NT Server and Workstation. Another good program I found is called System Suite 2000. This offers alotmore for the money. Both programs were used, but I found the System Suite 2000 worked alot better. Like the previous answer, make sure the screen saver is turned off when using the Win98 defrag.

This is usually a virtual memory problem. Check if Windows manages it, or the client set a value that is too low for the programs to run.

If he has enough memory, (64MB RAM or so), reboot in safe mode, turn off the virtual memory, then reboot, again in safe mode, then scandisk and defrag. When that’s done, set the virtual memory for whatever you prefer, then reboot. This will eliminate the more than likely fragmented swap file, creating a contiguous swap file and making your client a happy camper. You must boot in safe mode, though. I tried it without safe mode, and 64MB was not enough to load all the Win98 crap and startup crap my client had. Consequently, I had to reinstall the OS because it killed some icons and apps that wouldn’t come back.

I ran into a similar problem once. I had partitoned and formatted using the western digital program that ships with their products. In order to solve that we had to do a data transfer, fdisk and format using the MS version, and dump the data back on.
