Scandisk/Defrag problem

By Kenone ·
I have multiple PC's 650mhz - 900mhz, Win98SE, 256meg Ram, 19 gig hard drives, all pIII's. I cannot run either scandisk or defrag in Windows, (DOS works fine), I get an error message that the system does not have enough memory to run the program (obviously incorrect). I have seen posts at a couple of sites about a download from MS to fix this problem, but I can't find the posts nor can I find the download at microsoft.com. Does anybody know where this patch is????

No third party tools were used on these machines and other machines which were set up identically still work, also Scandisk & defrag did work on these machines when they were originally deployed.

Maybe this is the MS patch you have seen , but it applies to more ram than you have .

Yes I saw these "workarounds" and tried them - I even tried removing half the memory in the machines - no go

It is possible that you partiition are4 not correct on the units.

You will possibly need to fdisk ,format and reload the operating system.

You could possibly take a look at how you have set up the hard drives in Cmos

Anything is possible but, all machines are originally setup the same, same BIOS,Image, etc., and everything DID work after initial deployment.

Close all running programs and disable all nonessential items in your system tray this will usually free up the memory you need

if the disks are formatted with the disk manager programs you see such a problem.
i have these problems also.
may be a solution:
try to back up all disk to another disk and format the problem disk using dos format(i mean open it a startup disket and type "format c: /s " ) and turn your back up's to the formatted disk. i think this will solve the problem

NO third party software used in setup. Some third party programs loaded after MS Office, but, again, everything worked when deployed.

To All: Anna777 is on the right track I think. All the effected systems have millions of files (in one case over 10 million) all are running graphics editing software of some type. Just offloading files from "C" root doesn't solve the problem. Microsoft apparently is aware of the problem because they refuse to respond to "support" requests, a dead giveaway to a guilty conscience.
