Scandisk has restarted 10 times.

By diskaus ·
Hi all, I have had this annoying problem with 2 diferent systems 1 with Windows 98_SE, and 1 with Windows ME, we cant run Scandisk (thourough) or Defrag . I Keep getting "Scandisk has restarted 10 times" Even if we do it after restarting the computer in Safe Mode where there is nothing else running but explorer, has anyone else encountered this problem? How do i fix it ( besides Formating and reloading Windows, i have run System File Checker & Scan Registry Files in Win 98_SE and Scan Registry in win ME ( Win Me Does not have System File Checker)

You have booted into Safe mode and scandisk/defrag will not complete? I have only seen this one time before...

Scandisk did complete; but defrag kept circling until the error message: "Scandisk has restarted 10 times" kept coming back.

Safe mode boots without anything but the basic neccesities of Windows... so I had this computer backed up, reformatted and re-imaged. I figured that the defrag utility got corrupted; scan disk was not showing any errors.

In your case, scandisk may be corrupted too. You can try to extract those programs from the cabinet files on cd, or you can start over. Formatting the drive and reinstalling seems to have resolved the problem for the computer that I saw.

Sorry, one more thing to try in the case of Win98 computers.... boot to DOS prompt and do a manual scandisk without any options. When it finishes, andswer "yes" to "surface scan". Hopefully that does not show and bad sectors. If it's okay, thenreformat and reinstall. If it does show bad areas, then the hdd is probably going bad and should be replaced.

Close all your programs that load at start up and you will be able to scan without programs
Easy way to press control alt delete and clich on one by one except explorer and end task
Also works when writing cd or copy

you can try this route also In the Registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Applets \ Defrag \ Settings. Now, you'll see a list of four important subkeys: Disable loadqm.exe, Disable loadwc.exe, Disable ScreenSaver, and Disable Wkdetect.exe. Guess what you're going to do now? Double- click each of those entries' (Default) values and set them to "YES" (in the right-hand pane). But what else usually gets interrupted with disk activity? Scandisk. So, in the same Applets hierarchy, scroll down the list until you see the Scandisk key. Continue to cascade through to its Settings key and you'll find: Disable loadqm.exe, Disable loadwc.exe, and Disable ScreenSaver. Do the same thing here as you did for the Defrag key. NOTE: this will only suspend operation of those utilities while Defrag or Scandisk are being run. LOADWC.EXE (Windows Update Checker), LOADQM.EXE (Query Manager), and WKDETECT.EXE (Update Checker for Microsoft Works) can safely be turned off in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG.
