Scandisk has restarted 10 times.

By diskaus ·
Hi all, I have had this annoying problem with 2 diferent systems 1 with Windows 98_SE, and 1 with Windows ME, we cant run Scandisk (thourough) or Defrag . I Keep getting "Scandisk has restarted 10 times" Even if we do it after restarting the computer in Safe Mode where there is nothing else running but explorer, has anyone else encountered this problem? How do i fix it ( besides Formating and reloading Windows, i have run System File Checker & Scan Registry Files in Win 98_SE and Scan Registry in win ME ( Win Me Does not have System File Checker)

In addition to the previous suggestions of starting in Safe Mode and running Scan Disk and Defrag there as well as removing the screen savers and setting power management so that the monitor, video card, and hard drive Never go to sleep, you will need to check that the system BIOS does not have a power management setting for going to sleep on either of these three things. Enterprise versions of anti virus over networks are known to interrupt scandisk and defrag and Microsoft's suggested resolution to the 10 times error message is to start in Safe Mode as suggested. If all of these things don't work for you, perhaps it's your hard drive going bad. Perhaps ghosting the image to a similar PC will prove or disprove that. Last resort would be to totally reinstall Windows and start from scratch. Best wishes. Please post what solution finally worked for you. This is a very interesting problem.

Also, Answer #14's question about your hardware should be addressed. Please post a comment listing any non-standard hardware that may be causing this problem. Is this PC a print server or master browser or offer any other services over the network? Removing AND uninstalling from Windows peripherals other than video would be essential to trouble shooting this glitch. Have you done that yet? Please post a comment with your question above. Thanks.

This comment is in reference to Merete's answer to "never" scan idsk or defrag in Safe Mode. Doing it in Safe Mode is Microsoft's solution to this problem--please check their knowledge base. Also, there are not minimal drivers, but no drivers loadedin Safe Mode. Safe Mode is VGA mode with no peripheral drivers loaded so that trouble shooting and more can be done when pesky peripherals may be causing the problem, however in this case, I believe it's an enterprise version of anti-virus that cannot be turned off by the client, thus making it necessary to do the scan + defrag in safe mode. You don't need device drivers to do that, just windows. I stand by my answer(s). Best wishes.

Hi, never ever defrag or scan disc from safe mode as windows is running with only minimal drivers here, just press ctrl alt delete, this shows all running programs. Regards Merete
