Secondary IDE Devices not working

By JHook ·
After loading Easy CD Creator 4 by Adaptec in Windows 2000 and restarting, I received an error something to the effect of ?could not finish the set up, edit the registry manually?? When I pulled up Windows Explorer I noticed that BOTH my CD/DVD ROMand my CDRW drive were gone. When I looked in device manager, both devices had the yellow exclamation point indicating a problem. Looking at the properties of the devices the status stated, ?This device is not working properly because Windows cannotload the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)?

Also, the event Viewer shows an interesting message quite a few times,
?The Cdralw2k service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.?
Too far gone for ?Last known good??
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the malfunctioning devices every way I could imagine. I ?updated? the drivers for the Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller. I even uninstalled the Secondary IDE Controller and rebooted to see if it would come back with some ?children? (my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1202 and my PHILIPS PCRW804 CDRW Drive). All of the ?updating? was done using only the driversprovided by the operating system. I haven?t had too much luck finding drivers in the web.

Does anyone have any ideas (besides reinstalling Windows)? I would rather turn one screw that yank the whole engine. Thanks!!!

Uninstall the Easy CD Creator software

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Security
Remove the file called Etetnt.mpd; it has a revision date of 1997.

Thanks for all the input. I think I have to rule out a hardware problem because I finally gave up and backed my data to a network share and reinstalled from scratch. All devices are working now. I feel somewhat disappointed though. I'm sure you all know the frustration. I had to **** away everything just because I couldn't solve a seemingly simple problem.
Thanks again!
