Serious security issue (JOKE, JOKE, STUPID JOKE!)

    Locked

    by pennatomcat ·

Thought I would share this with everyone. One of my friends sent it to me.

This is upsetting–I thought I should pass it along. Did you know that you can now see anyone’s Driver’s License on the internet, including your own? I just searched for mine and there it was–photo and all!! Thanks Homeland Security! Where is our right to privacy?

I definitely removed mine. I suggest that you do the same.

Go to the web site and check it out. Just enter your name, city and state to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked “Please Remove”. This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

        Trust and responsibility

        by stanw ·

        In reply to REALLY??

TechRepublic should be not just ashamed, but do something about the implicit gross violation of public trust involved. Trust is easy to distroy, hard to restore and the source of your readership.

Sure, it is true that one needs to be circumspect about everything you read – but consider what the loss of commercial respect means to your reputation. For instance, would you expect the NYTimes to do better in their efforts to resist the urge to pull a stunt like printing a bold headline “Wallstreet on verge of historic collapse” just to see if they could create it? (Ignoring that, in many ways they’re doing it via their manifest media bias chipping away at public faith everyday.) Consider what happens when the induced crisis is underway? What, for example, would we the public be left to think when they try to calm the real thing?

TR: Please think carefully before you make reality worse.

Well, you were duped and possibly embarrassed. This time it was innocent, if we are to believe the message on the site.

All of us need an occassional wake up call to how easy it is to be niave. This could have been a phish. It is a good example of how dangerous the Internet can be.

We should laugh at it and say to ourself, “I need to be careful.”

Following the link to see a monkey on a driver’s license, caused me to be ashamed. Reading your response restored my self esteem and hopefully will make me think ‘outside the box’, as you did so well, when responding to bully type behaviour. I think the destructiveness of this trick, was on a more personal level than a newspaper headline, but along the same lines. Regardless, your response is well said.

In reply to Trust and responsibility

I need your help, I need to you go and ask all of your friends or just people anywhere if they might be able to assist you in finding a life and a sense of humor. If you can’t sit back and enjoy a funny little joke like this then maybe you should consider shooting yourself in the face 20-30 times. If your life is that bad and you are that angry then do us all a solid. Myself, I emailed the link to everone in the company and as the Sr. Sys Admin, I penned the email to look just like a real serious security threat.

          by sschafir ·

In reply to Trust and responsibility

Sometimes because the job is so stressful you need comedy relief. If this had been a phishing scam it would have asked for an address not just a city and state. Having just your name and city and state won’t get anyone that far as there could be many people fitting this criteria. I for one think that having these little jokes once in awhile is good for all of our morale. To be so serious about everything means you have forgotten how to laugh and enjoy life.

Let me see if I understand you correctly… someone put the URL in “unintentionally”… that must have been quite an accomplishment. I’ve heard of people shoting themselves etc. unintentionally, but it seems to me there must have been SOME intent that caused their fingers to move enought to enter the URL.

Governments have been doing this central access of Driving licence/Passport photographs for years. So this is nothing new.

Think however of the potential plus side of this set up. If vendors/banks/gas stations etc cross checked your Drivers Licence photograph against a central database photograph it would make Identity Theft much more difficult.

Although I agree that this probably could have waited and been posted as a Friday Yuk, simply because you’re a sourpuss doesn’t mean we all are. We mix work AND play here. If I wanted to see pages and pages of mind-numbing, stone-serious technical info and that’s all, I’d go to MSDN.

I think your problem is with the bot-generated contents of the newsletters not being looked critically enough by a real human before being sent out. You’re correct to feel that way, and I suggest sending feedback on it. Unfortunately these are the sorts of things that happen when things become too automated.

Shame on Tech Republic – Bad, bad, bad

        by phillydave ·

I use this site and it’s services as a bonafide trusted source of security & privacy information. I assume that the links it provides are the same. How can I believe the TechRerpublic TechNote emails and links they contain if after canceling through my web proxy to browse them I find out the links are nothing more hoax, joke or phishing websites? The last thing a contentious security pro needs is to be leery of TechRepublic emails and links. Guess it’s back to Networkworld, Computerworld and the like for “trusted” security information. I hope someone at TechRepublicor C-Net Networks reads this post and understands the concern. From now on I guess I need to ?click? with a grain of salt when info comes from TechRepublic.

      Pranks never work

      by thisisfutile ·

In reply to Serious security issue (JOKE, JOKE, STUPID JOKE!)

…that’s why they are called pranks.

Usually it starts with a good, innocent idea but it always (and I mean that in 100% of the cases) ends up offending a person, or worse yet, damaging a relationship.

      Example…….

Joe Prankster emails Karen with a scary email. If she looks at the seemingly normal picture, after 10 seconds it changes to a scary face and a screaming sound will play through her speakers, startling her.

      *Karen gets an email*

*Karen opens email and starts studying the picture*

*Karen takes a sip of her HOT coffee*

      …see where this is going?

When does a prank ever work?

Had you looked at the URL when you moved your mouse over the link, you would have seen that it wasn’t of any government site. Maybe those who were mad should look at themself and realize that they are not the most important person in the company and can’t take time out for a joke now and them and if they don’t have time for some silliness, then they should look into time management so that they can have time for something besides work. I didn’t fall for this when my brother-in-law sent it to me last year. But I must admit I fell for it when it was a link within TR. I was disappointed enough to waste more of my time writing this response. It was an interesting lesson. Never let down your guard…

One of your fellow TechRepublic members has sent you a private message:

          Subject: You need help …
          Message:
Stop being so angry … do you work for techRepublic or something …

BTW your Bio is so full of it. You need a shrink.

          I await your reply … not 😉

Usually a private message should remain private, but in this case the circumstances clearly dictate otherwise as you’ve provided no valid email address to send this to. You could have posted this in a reply to one of my posts, but you were too cowardly. Unfortunately, drive-by insults aren’t something I have much patience for, and besides, the intelligent posters who frequent these discussions could use the laugh.

Here’s the reply you weren’t awaiting:

          1. No, I don’t work for TR. The job that guarantees me income is in my bio, and, in addition to that, I take coding, writing, and editing projects on the side. If TechRepublic wants to hire me for a regular humor column or some sort of editing, I’d be willing to consider it, but as of now, my only work I do for TR is making others in the discussions laugh and, when required, bringing the LART of God down on the, shall we say, “posting-skills-challenged”. That is done on a strictly volunteer basis, and it’s not something they’ve ever asked me to do.

          2. Everything in my bio is easily verified. It’s not my fault I have technical skills that you don’t. There’s also a lot of experience I have that only related tangentially to IT, so it was left out (things like having been a lexicographer, copyeditor, Spanish translator, Army Airborne SIGINT analyst, etc.) Nevertheless, my compliments on figuring out that the blue color of my name means clickable.

          3. I have multiple degrees, and one of them is in psychology. If I felt that I needed a psychiatrist, I have the training to figure that out on my own. Thanks for the free, unsolicited advice, however. It was worth every penny.

Now go get back to your homework, luvinIT. If you don’t study hard, you’ll never get out of sixth grade.

As far as the other reply to this noone is mad, and noone was namecalling. Just a simple statement. so if the shoe fits then wear it. This whole incident was just a harmless joke, and I realize many IT people don’t have a sense of humor, but they are the ones that are not allowed to react with the users (or shouldn’t be allowed to) and the rest of us will continue to move on and take over their positions or rise above them.

You haven’t been here long enough to be able to make the snap judgement you have made and if you are incapaable of lightening up IMHO you will be better served by being elsewhere. To the contrary, it would appear I need permission to even post a comment. Certain people on this forum seem to think they own it because they’ve used the forums more than others. If they don’t agree with you they pounce and if you try to fight back they pile on. I started out posting a simple comment against the original post and was immediately insulted. I tend to bite back. It appears a lot of people in the TR forums are simply there to attack those they don’t agree with. This isn’t MySpace or AIM, or at least I didn’t think so. Maybe all forums have gone into the crapper. Bye now, asshole, have fun in your little ambush forum.

I wasn’t just a soldier, I was an Airborne soldier. So, yeah, I know a thing or two about foxholes. If you’re not going to think before you post, at least have the decency to read what has already been posted.

What does your post have to do with foxholes? Maybe once you reach the age of 18 and move out of the house, you can try joining the military and see if you’ve got what it takes. Then you can come back and talk about it and maybe have half a clue.

Since there are more Windows users than Linux users right now, there always will be. Superbly reasoned argument, that one. Microsoft rules now, so they always will!

Tell that to IBM. Or Silicon Graphics. Or Cray. Or DEC. Or Sperry-Rand. Or WordPerfect. Or Novell. Or any of the other companies who dominated their fields and who everyone expected always would. The future has a nasty habit of becoming the present, and the present has a nasty habit of throwing you a curve ball. And the past has a nasty habit of carrying people like you away in its undertow.

I graduated from jump school in September of 1996. I was in C Company, which is the one the Army uses as guinea pigs for new techniques (or at least it was at the time). At the time, they were trying to reduce stress fractures, so instead of running to our training areas with no equipment, they had us march with rucksacks filled with 70 pounds of sandbags. We also had the first female black hat ever. I felt sorry for the guys in 3rd Platoon, because she was like a Chihuahua overdosed on Speed.

I had spent almost three months at Ft. Huachucha, AZ right before going to Ft. Benning. The elevation at Ft. Huachucha is around 5000 ft., so when I got to the nice, normal elevation of southern Georgia, my lungs were absorbing oxygen like crazy. At the initial PT test, I ran my fastest 2 miles ever, 13:03. I was pretty proud of myself–until I turned around and saw, out of 334 people, only about 40 behind me. Those Infantry guys can run like the wind.

You know the rules about only being able to fall out of one run, unless it’s the last one of the week, in which case if you fall out you’re gone immediately? At the end of the first week, I was in the courtyard smoking, since there was no smoking in the barracks. I overheard a couple of people on the bleachers next to me complaining to each other about how they were being washed because they only fell out of one or two measly runs. This irritated me because every time I took a step then, a shooting pain seared my knee. It was like being stabbed with an icepick every time my left leg touched the ground. After I got to my permanent duty station, I had it checked out. It turned out that the whole time, I had had a bone spur poking into my tendon. I ended up having minor surgery to remove it.

The whole point of that is that is when I really learned what determination is. And also when I really began to despise excuses. It would have been easy to quit, but that thought didn’t stand a chance because I wanted those wings. I think there was only one time I really thought about giving up, and that was after about six hours on the Swing Landing Trainer.

I thought this was funny when it happened: you know when you’re in the sheds chuting up and you find that you don’t have all the parts you’re supposed to have? I had to go get something, and there was a pretty long line in front of me. The black hat handing stuff out snarled at everyone who came before him. “What do you want?” to a major. “Why are you bothering me?” to a 2LT. “Why are you wasting my time?” to a SGT. And then, to the man in front of me, “What can I do for you, Sergeant Major?” in a sincerely friendly voice.

Here’s a story that would have been funny if it hadn’t happened to me: on my first jump, I ended up first in the stick. This meant that I had the pleasure of standing right at the door the whole time, watching the ground pass below, having no idea what it would be like. If it hadn’t been my first jump, it probably wouldn’t have been a big deal, but it was not fun for the first one.

Here’s a funny story that didn’t happen to me. On the first jump, we had someone who froze at the door. He held onto the handles and wouldn’t budge. Finally the jumpmaster convinced him that he didn’t have to jump. He told him quite calmly to put his hands on his reserve (which, as you know, you ALWAYS have to do when walking anywhere), go to the front of the plane, and they’d send him on his way. He said ok, and as soon as he moved his hands, boom!, a boot to the behind and out the door he was. This comes second-hand, so it may or may not be true. It seems a bit apocryphal to me, but I don’t know either way.

Here is a VERY unfunny story for those of you who may be thinking about going Airborne and have read this far: be damn sure you pass your static line to the jumpmaster correctly. There is a reason your training emphasizes that so much during the first two weeks. Unfortunately, one of my friends had someone that did not pay attention to this on one of the jumps. His arm got stuck in the other guy’s static line, and caused SEVERE (as in, almost entire left side of torso black and blue, shoulder dislocated, and arm broken) injury to him. It’s not a pretty sight; I was there.

Here was a nice lesson in the maneuverability (or lack thereof) of the T-10C. My last jump, I ended up directly over one of the black hat’s pickup trucks when my chute opened up and I looked down. All the way down, I pulled as hard as I could to get out of the way, but I landed all of ten yards from the truck. What agility those things have.

I’m curious as to whether your classmates did this, too: throughout the first four jumps, only a very few people pulled their reserve chutes. However, on the fifth jump, quite a few people did. I think they wanted to be doubly sure that they made it. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to understand that that only makes an already hard landing harder. We had more sprains and fractures on the last jump than we did in all four previous jumps put together.

Anyway, enough reminiscing. The rest of my story in a nutshell: I joined because I wanted to fly choppers. However, before I did so, I wanted to try something interesting for a while. My first pick for MOS was 19D, but that wasn’t open the day I was at MEPS. I went home and tried the following week, but it wasn’t open then, either. I looked at some things in the medical field instead, but most of them didn’t have the Army College Fund and/or had a six year enlistment. Finally they just gave me a printout of what was open that day. I scanned the list and saw something with the intriguing title of Signals Intelligence Analyst (98C). I looked it up and it sounded very vague, since the details of the job are classified and the unclassified parts are not very descriptive, but somewhat interesting. I ended up going with that. It turned out to be almost perfect for me: it was like doing logic puzzles or Sudoko all day, except that the answers actually meant something. It combined a high degree of analytical ability with the need for clear, expressive writing. The fact that I ended up at Schofield Barracks made it pretty nice, too. (I didn’t tell the Army that I’m fluent in Spanish because that would have meant that I would have ended up only one place: Ft. Hood, TX. It meant passing up an extra $75/month, but that was a small price to pay to end up in Hawaii.) I probably would have stayed in, maybe to retirement, but life had other plans for me.

We missed each other by about a year.

          by apotheon ·

In reply to In another post in this discussion, you already had your answer.

I graduated jump school in August(?) of 1995, and went straight to RIP. I came into jump school with a handicap: I had broken my foot toward the end of AIT, and had to stay at the OSUT battalion until it healed enough to pass the PT test before they’d send me to get some airborne training. Three months of holdover status at the same damned place I’d done Basic was a less than ideal situation in which to find myself, but I wouldn’t give up my Airborne slot.

I was in B Co. at jump school right about the time that the “blood wings” tradition was getting phased out. To answer the inevitable question: I still have the wings, and there’s still a bend in one pin where it hit my rib. I don’t for the life of me remember what platoon I was in, but I remember running all the damned time. It’s for the jump school running and the limping around in AIT with a broken foot before I finally got a cast (one week on a broken foot, including an FTX and two road marches, before I got it properly diagnosed) that I blame my later knee problems, but that’s another story.

I’ve never been first in a stick, but I never got nervous at a jump, either. In fact, the two overriding emotional reactions I had were boredom and annoyance with the hassle of it all. I think removing pretty much all ability to determine whether I lived or died also removed the excitement for me: I find driving fast on narrow switchbacks more exciting, probably because it’s my skill that keeps me on the road, and not blind luck ensuring that my chute doesn’t cigarette-roll.

I remember that someone missed the DZ and landed on one of our cattle-trucks at one of the training jumps. I remember a sign in the dayroom that said “Keep your dirty nasty LEGS off the furniture!” I remember that the jetwash from my one and only C-141 jump popped my chute open so hard that the harness just about yanked my testicles into my throat. I remember thinking that tower week should have been a ride at Six Flags. I remember being impressed with how much better the food in the D-Fac was than at my OSUT battalion. I remember having to untangle risers for several hours on a stupid detail — just my rotten luck. I remember those big-ass beetles in the sawdust pits for PT, doing pull-ups until my shoulders quivered, and sleeping while a C-131 did racetracks.

I don’t recall many reserve chute openings in my class. I don’t know if that means there weren’t many, or I just wasn’t paying attention.

Mostly, though, I try to forget. Programming is more fun. Regardless of that, it looks like we’ve got some more things in common than software preferences.

I still have every beret I’ve worn to a formation, and my first pair of jump boots. Thank goodness I never had to wear that McDonald’s hat after AIT.

EDIT: Damn, was that a bad typo! Ahem. 1995, not 2005. Thanks.

I am not saying that malware is not a threat. I am saying however, that if you were doing your job correctly then you would already have preventive measures in place and have access to tool that were needed in case there was a breech in the system.

Wow, so many complainers. I don’t recognize the names of 95% of them.

Is this only contribution they can make? Spouts of pompous indignation.

Some people are actually more productive and consistent with high productivy when then can have an occasional laugh.

I was on a flight once, the plane arrived late, one of the, “Professional,” passengers smartly announced that he was going to sell his stock in the airline. I was like, “Yeah, that will teach them a lesson and make them regret their actions.”
I see a lot of that here. How are you going to take your ball and go home with it if you never put the ball into play in the first place?

For everyone of you complainers that are foaming in rabid fury, I say this. Your research skills must be pretty lame if you are going to, “Quit TR,” over this one item when there are thousands of brilliant posts regarding tech on these boards.
If you are just finally realizing that there is a Misc. board, you would do well to read the posts by some of the most intelligent real professionals I have had the opportunity to learn from.

As a project manager, I’d boot you off my team for acting in such a hissy fit. Enterprise roll outs need Team Player people who can roll with the waves, overcome, adapt, see outside their tiny little boxes, have room for growth and above all not waste my time with meaningless self-righteousness indignation whines.

You could have seen the joke for what it is, put it on your lists of things not to do again and moved on. Better yet, you could have realized that the project lead is having a bad day and passed it on for a bit of mental R&R.

In reply to If you were serious

I’ve seen some serious posts here. They have nothing to do with the people who are here to attack others and show everyone how professional and expert they are. No one, as I’ve stated even bothered to look at my original post. ITGirli was insulted because I and others disagreed with her. We didn’t think this was a place for a stupid prank. We were all insulted by her original post that referred to us as idiots because she felt we couldn’t take a joke. I and I’m sure some of the others that thought this little prank was inappropriate were supposed to simply accept this. I didn’t. I’ve been counciled by “nighthawk’ and others in my forum etiquette. None of these people ever looked back on their own. They seem to be here to impress everyone with their expertise. They can write anything about themselves that they want to, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are and do what they say. To hear them talk they’re all rich and successful because they’re such great technicians, IT experts, millionaires, and whatever. I don’t buy this simply because they say so or are adept at putting others down. I think any group of people who would put so much effort into demeaning someone that can see through them are the ones that are really unprofessional. I’ll put my certification numbers up against any one of them who is willing to give me theirs. I don’t know much, but I know what I know, and none of these guys could ever take that away from me on a forum where they have everyone convinced that they’re the experts in the field. If they’re so professional, how could a little nobody like me stir them up the way I have. A professional would say, “Screw this guy, he’s not worth my time”. They keep plucking away and it amuses me no end. It only proves my point. No one who claims to be as professional, as expert, and as accomplished as these knuckleheads claim to be would give a “nobody” like me five minutes of their time. I know, I work for people that really are what they claim to be. These people can’t insult me no matter what they post. It’s great to watch them self-destruct and prove to me and others, I hope, how unprofessional they really are. Read my posts and then read theirs. I started just above ITGirli the Submarine designer. I’ve had comments from people with 700 employees, soon to be 1100. Give me a break. This guy is in this post because he hasn’t anything better to do, not because he’s the accomplished person he claims to be. I’ve been threatened by “nighthawk” and I’m still waiting to see what he thinks he can do to me. By the way the TI-99 was replaced by the 99a after a short while. It was the first PC. I don’t know what a TI-3000 is, but I’m sure one of these so-called experts will tell me. If you were working on a Windows operating system in 1990 it wasn’t a true operating system. It was a program that ran on top of DOS. That was an operating system. You can learn that in basic A+ training. Who are these guys? Why do they think they’re so great? Because they can quote a lot of abbreviated certifications and claim they have achieved them? Do you really want to just take their word for it? Like I’ve said, read back. Who’s attacking who. Challenge their credentials and they get their panties in a bunch. They still don’t back up their credentials. I don’t have as many as they claim to have, but I’ll back up mine with numbers they can look up. Will they?

When I saw the “Did you know that you can now see anyone’s Driver’s License on the Internet” link Ithought, “Naw, not that one again!” Actually, such a link would be nice for ID proofing for HSPD-12 PIV issuance, but I guess we’ll just have to go with the booklet the alcohol companies hand out documenting the formats of the various US States and Territories and the Canadian Provinces. Now if anyone has a link to Green Cards or Passports, pass it on. 🙂

Copy and paste the following into a post and add some words of your own. You’ll find that most people here are quite reasonable and willing to let things slide once.

        —–

To those of you I may have offended:
I apologize for not thinking before I posted. I promise to give your posts the same respect I give my own. I realize that what I did was wrong, but sometimes people make mistakes. I’ll use this as a learning experience, and hope we can have a pleasant and beneficial exchange in the future.

        —–

Isn’t that easier than trying to hide and cover up the past? If you’re mature enough to admit you aren’t perfect, you’ll be surprised at how much more friendly people’s attitudes are toward you. It actually is possible to own up to fallibility; as a matter of fact, just this morning I _thanked_ someone for pointing out something I’d overlooked, and it didn’t kill me.

Whether you take this advice or not is entirely up to you. It has about as much effect on my life as the tidal force of Neptune does. I’m simply trying to give you a gentle nudge in the right direction.

I have been attacked by a good number of you people, including you and I don’t believe you ever read my original post. I didn’t attack anyone. I simply stated that I didn’t come to TR to have pranks shoved down my throat. There is a minority of you people who, basically own this forum and like to insult people. I can do that too, although I’m not as practiced as you are. You blather on in your profile about yourself and I don’t. That doesn’t necessarily mean I have only six years experience. Then you resort to threats. Bring it on, whatever a +12 is. I have a right to defend myself and if it hurts your little sensibilities then tough. I have limited experience in forums, but I know a meeting place that is dominated by a few when I see one. Have a great time gladhanding each other, but you’ll never get honest input from people by screwing with them. Your advice would be sound if it weren’t generated in a beehive.
I didn’t bite first, ITGirli did, but then she must be part of your little group that has taken over the forums at TR. I’ll stick with legitimate forums from here on. This is my last post on TR. By the way, I tried to cancel my membership and found no way to do so. In the process I changed my username. I won’t be getting any more newsletters from them though. Have a nice rest of your life.

You couldn’t find a way to unsubscribe from everything? Yes, TR has devilishly hidden the process of unsubscribing under “My Newsletters”, scrolling down to the bottom, checking the box that says “Unsubscribe from all TechRepublic newsletters”, and then clicking the button right below it. For God’s sake, what do you want them to do? Add a huge button at the top of every page that says “Have TechRepublic read my mind”?

Why stay around??? I missed most of this but after ……………………

          by sleepin’dawg ·

          In reply to Reply

using print preview I’ve pretty much caught up on what has transpired. So, the first question that immediately crosses my mind is; why are you here??? Do you see yourself as some great intellect bringing some form of enlightenment to the poor downtrodden masses on these forums???

If so, you are sadly missing your mark. From what I have seen of your contributions to date, you are completely deficient in some very basic computer skills and you have a limited grasp of security matters. It would appear you see your function here, is to serve as a juvenile irritant to the professionals who regualarly inhabit TR. You gratuitously insulted many here, many who are so obviously in possession of skills superior to yours, and like the anal retentive little a$$wipe that you are, you splutter and spout meaningless, juvenile, drivel and wish to challenge people??? Oh!! By the way did I mention we view you as a consummate liar.

Get real. You haven’t even begun to realize the skill sets of the people you are chosing to oppose. You’ve been around??? Longer than Old Guy??? JD??? Maecuff??? Give me a break!!! I’ve got socks that are older than you and which smell better than you, meaning they don’t smell of baby puke. Most if not all are in positions of hiring and firing pukes like you and they got to their positions by paying their dues which you haven’t even begun to realize must be paid if you have any hope of surviving. You and lovIT or whatever inane name he chooses to call himself, are a matched pair, coming across like a couple of little punks trying to impress your betters. So far, you’ve only impressed me as being something I might have stepped in accidently. Furthermore you compound your stupidity by calling the TR techs a bunch of dumb wannabes??? Brilliant move that one was.

You, who are so sadly lacking in them, question somebody’s people skills??? The idiotic reference to hospitals that develop people skills is proof positive that you do not have any inkling of what people skills are or you would realize that hospials are not in the business of teaching people skills but are one of the best arenas available, in which to learn and develop them with the aim of becoming a team player.

Every year, universities and technical schools put forth new batches of graduates who hope to establish careers in IT and/or technology. Every one of them is invariably hired on, on a probationary basis and at the end of that period, the chaff are sorted out. This often amounts to as many as 25% of the probationers being let go. Tell me, how many times have you been released at the end of your probationary periods??? More than once, I would think and each time you’ve been released, it has resulted in a move further down the food chain, to the point where you now have embarassing gaps in your resume and your sole hope, being unemployable, is found in starting a one man service shop, assembling PCs for friends and neighbours and trying to eke out an existence on a shoe string. Like it or not, that is the sole image of yourself that you have managed to create here; that and the one of your being a consummate liar.

Contrary to what you may believe, most, like myself, take no pleasure in firing people and anyone who does or suggests they do, seldom last very long. However, that being said, I sometimes take satisfaction in the knowledge of having done the right thing by dismissing an individual, not because they weren’t knowledgable enough but because they just didn’t fit in, either that or they pissed me off. If you somehow managed to get by our screening, I doubt you’d be capable of getting through probation.

So now you know what the image is that you have created here. Why bother sticking around??? we have dispensed with better than you in the past and undoubtedly will do so again in the future. In the mean time you will serve as comic relief and a shing example of what an ass and an idiot are. Remember that you fight back??? With what??? In a battle of wits, you are unarmed and you are playing with people that think the first rule of participating in a knife fight is to bring a gun.

Enjoy what’s left of your stay and be careful when you crawl out, not to let the knob hit you in the ass in the same manner as it did at all the other place you’ve had to crawl away from. Oh by the way, do take your little boyfriend lovIT with you. I hope your little business does well enough to let you move out of your parents basement; even they must be getting tired of you.

’Tis better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

Trust me on this, few, if any, have any doubts about you; I know I haven’t. X-(

Ever heard the remark “Legends in their own minds”? I don’t think I ever considered being in IT which denotes Network Administrator to me. Your pal started out with a Commodore 64. … but, I think part of the problem here is that we of the 50s are expected to be a bit more circumspect and reply more calmly than what you have been doing. Name-calling is usually reserved for first salvos and last resorts. In between, there is supposed to be some period of discussion where an attempt is made to communicate.

If you are going to leave, just do it and don’t look back. If you are going to hang around, please put on an appearance that portrays the kind of background that you claim to have. Anyone here can claim to be anything they want to. All we have to judge by is the amassed image in the words left behind. by sleepin’dawg ·

older than you and that’s what threw me. You’re one of those pukes that supposedly grew up in the permissive sixties, except on you reality didn’t take and you still sound like a whining crybaby from that era. You were still probably wearing diapers when I sat down at my first console, an IBM RAMAC 507. I had turned sixteen two months prior to that. I’ve been around and using computers ever since.

I am an engineer with an MBA and have been self employed for more years than I was ever employed by others, the exception being a gap of ten years when I was forced by financial constraints to take up employment in aerospace. In March 88, I and four partners started our own company to design and create component circuitry for the aerospace industry. I am the majority and controlling shareholder of the company. As of Jan 2006, we have offices in three locations and will soon be adding a fourth.

At present we employ in the region of 700 and that will increase to about 1100 when we bring the new facility on line. I have work currently operational on the shuttles and on the space station and we will have stuff on the shuttle replacements as well. My hobby is experimenting with the creation of natural colour animated holographs. Oh yeah, I should have been a bit more specific about my engineering degree, its actually engineering physics.

The argument is not about anyone being more professional than you, we all are. I read your drivel and I can sense your type, I’ve seen your kind too many times to count. You are right about one thing though I wouldn’t have the oportunity to hire you because I seriously doubt we would invite you to be interviewed. We only invite those who are recommended by their universities from the top quarter of the graduating classes. We pay well in order to get them and as I say we weed out the incompetents at the end of their probation. You can see here why you wouldn’t make the grade.

          http://tinyurl.com/6wbv

Franklin Lakes, big deal strictly lower middle class compared with Boston, plus homes and/or condominiums in three other locations. I am retiring from my company in July but I’ve been in a position to retire for almost 15 years now. You on the other hand are 56 years old and I’m almost willing to bet you’ll be working up to retirement day and maybe beyond, not because you want to but because you have to. And maybe that’s what makes the difference; I work because I enjoy it, you work because you have to. when I retire from my company, I will not stop working; I have other projects that I’m interested in and am exploring their potential for profit.

You were insulted here out of reaction to your insulting remarks and just your reaction to the joke, told most of us the depths of your knowledge. Being the big expert you claim to be, you should have been tipped you off to what you were clicking on. Yes even experts make the occasional mistake but a real expert would have know immediately and rather than throwing gratuitous insults around, would have laughed at himself and moved along. You didn’t choose to do that which indicated to everyone the level of your skill set and the fact you proceeded to puke and piss on everyone just furthere served to demonstrate the shortcomings in your character.

BTW you’re right you are older than Old Guy by four years but I know, I and most of the others here, would place more trust in his skills than we ever would in yours. You referred to the techs on TR as a bunch of dumb wannabes; aside from being seriously in error, you’re the wannabe and an exceedingly dumb one, at that.

I never claimed to be a big expert at anything, unlike the way you go on about yourself. You obviously didn’t look up Franklin Lakes. Lower middle class? Unlike Boston? Boston holds people from the lowest end of the economic food chain to the highest. I know I’ve lived there. They’re all decent people, even the ones who have to work hard for a living, unlike yourself, who is obviously a billionaire. I only work when I feel like it and then I don’t rely on income from my business. I do what I do because I enjoy it not because I need to. I quit the workforce about 14 years ago. That’s when I was in my early forties. Me I just made the right investments at the right times to not have to worry in my retirement, which, by the way, will always be semi. I didn’t have to become a big expert like you guys. All I hear is bragging from a bunch of self-proclaimed experts and millionaires who have nothing better to do with their time than argue with a nobody they have never met and never will. You really don’t know what you’re talking about and the only people that give you creedance are your friends on this forum, who by the way,are still, along with you, foaming at the mouth. I don’t wannabe anything, you people on the other hand, obviously do. I’ve had my stint in industry and didn’t like it and was glad to finally get out. Now I do as I please and it really pleases me to keep chuckleheads like you frothing. You guys are pathetic. It wasn’t my sensibilities that were hurt it was yours. You go out and explore investment opportunities if it suits you. Who cares?

Another foggy person sucked in by “nighthawk”, his friends, and his baloney. How much of this post have you read? I’m so much worse than those you would make friends with? Don’t say one word out of line here or you’ll find out what you’re really dealing with. These people are for the most part good people with legitimate comments. Would you join the ranks of the few dorks who obviously dominate the forums on this site. There is no threat, but I’m still looking for a way to get my name and personal information off of this site. Until then I guess I’m still here. Any suggestions? “Nighthawk” seems to think unsubscribing to the newsletters will accomplish this. It doesn’t, I tried. So if you in your infinite wisdom can show me a way to take my information and my membership off of this site I’ll go and leave you to “Nighthawk” and Oldguy”.
I don’t want to unsubscribe to the newsletters, I’ve done that and boy has that freed up my inbox. I want off in the sense that they don’t have any of my personal information. Got that figured out yet? “Nighthawk”, one of your pals, I suspect, hasn’t.

I don’t care about whether you can figure out how to eliminate your account from TR, really. I just find it funny that you issue ultimata and “final” messages then go on blithely commenting as if you’d never said you’d stop. I also find it funny that you’re threatening me. Let me know when you graduate high school.

I’m also amused by your suggestion that I should avoid joining the ranks of people like nighthawk808 who dominate this site. It’s obvious you’d have no way of knowing why I find that funny, considering you made that comment in the first place.

Keep telling me how much I’ll regret not joining your one-man crusade. I eagerly await your arrival in northern Colorado to beat me up.

Why for all that is good and holy would anyone want to travel to Ft. Collins???

Even it was for some good ol’ butt kicking?

          In reply to FORT COLLINS???

Fort Collins basically has all the benefits of a city and none of the detriments. It has the highest average attractiveness of women out of all the places I’ve ever lived. Traffic is very mild, cost of living is reasonable, I can conceivably walk ANYWHERE in town if need be, the winters and summers are both milder than Denver — and I’m here, which should be reason enough, since I’m so cool.

Now THAT is one of the most unintentionally funny things

          by nighthawk808 ·

In reply to And you are another lost soul

I’ve seen in a while! You think Apotheon is a member of my fan club? Considering that he probably beats me about 50-1 in post ratio, I doubt that’s the case. And further considering that he’s a rather consistent contributor, while I tend to fade in and out depending on how many side projects I’m juggling at the time, if anything you’d be closer to correct to claim the opposite. But that’s neither here nor there.

There’s no need to put quotes around my nickname. I don’t call you “idiot”, do I? No–you’re just plain idiot to me.

Here’s a crash course in linked lists:

          FOO->BAR->BAZ
If you have FOO point to BAZ instead, you have, for all practical purposes, eliminated BAR. That’s a lot like not having TechRepublic send you anything. If you don’t ever hear from them, they might as well not exist. I’d given you more credit than you deserved by thinking you could figure that out on your own.

The last time I checked, TechRepublic didn’t hijack your browser to point to this discussion every time you open Internet Exploited, and I don’t think they poisoned your ISP’s DNS servers so any name request is automatically resolved to this discussion–or any of TR for that matter. Here’s a way to fix your problem: make /dev/null your eth0 interface.

Oops, it’s only easy to do that sort of thing in Linux. I’ll leave it to you to figure out the 42 steps it would take to do that in Windoesn’t. If that’s too hard for you, add this line to \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts:

          127.0.0.1 techrepublic.com.com

That should fix it for you.

In reply to Now THAT is one of the most unintentionally funny things

The command is ”format c:\” to “fix” a windows system.

I can understand not working with them for a while that you would forget the simple dos commands that still do wonders.

Issue that command, and you will not have to worry about being hijacked by TR anymore. I promise! 😀 It will even free up some hard drive space for you!

          by nighthawk808 ·

In reply to Hawk, you are such a Windows noob!

but this was all I got:

          larry@SuSEWuSE:~> format c:\
          > foo
          bash: format: command not found

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to use Wine for this? 😉

I once had a friend whose sense of mischief was a bit more malicious than mine. Way back in the days of Windows 3.1, he loved to go to the display machines at stores, drop to a DOS prompt, and type those magical words. Eventually they wised up and got rid of the format command. Unfortunately, they never seemed to remember to get rid of deltree. It took a little longer to do its work, but the results were the same.

I haven’t done that to a store computer since the last time I did! ;\
