Servers missing

By cclark ·
The servers across the WAN link (2 T-1's) have disappeared from server manager/network neighborhood. I can ping, map drive, but not browse, all services are running.

If your 2 LANs are on different subnets ANSWER 5 is correct, you will needs WINS

Take a look at Q117633
How browsing a wide area network works
and Q120151
Browsing a wide area network with WINS
I know this isn't an answer but you'll need to track the issue down methodically

You may already have a WINS server available. Ensure that the "missing" server is reporting to the correct WINS server. You can quickly discern whether it is registered with WINS by checking the database using WINS manager in Admin. tools. This has happened to me after adding a NIC-I forgot to enable WINS on the offending server. Once I configured it and restarted, everything worked. It's almost embarrasing to admit that...

Definately a WINS problem, not enough info on Network architecture to thoroughly evaluate the problem. Ie. intermittent disappearing of a one time permanent disappearance. Has a sys change occured? How much bandwidth utilization is occuring over WAN, enough left for WINS?
Is there a WINS server or proxy on the far side of the WAN?

There needs to be a push-pull partnership of WINS servers across the WAN link. Without this partnership, it is possible that enough WAN bandwidth is consumed tocause the WINS Master Browser list on the near side of the link to be purged of the far side servers if they can't provide announcement to the WINS server before their TTL expires. Maybe change the browser list update interval.

If there is a WINS partnership is it fully functional? You need to be more specific.
