SharePoint Services 3.0 Primer
Lockedby techbro · about 17 years, 1 month ago
I have been using SharePoint VERY lightly for the last few months, but would really like to get into it. Can anyone recommend a good book or two that start at the beginning? I’m looking for something that describes how to do the business process analysis to determine how you should implement SharePoint and possibly how it can be integrated with your other Office apps and general workflow proceeses.
Ideas?

Everyday in work since August and I’ve found that the best way to learn about it is by using it, there are also alot of very good blogs out there that have been so useful to me.
A few of them being:
http://www.sharepointblogs.com/
http://weblog.vb-tech.com/nick/
and the microsoft website
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/office/aa905503.aspxbasically in short the books are useful but hands on experience is much better, and if you have any questions regarding SharePoint feel free to pm me if I dont know the answer I can always point you in the right direction

What kind of penetration (market share) has SharePoint achieved?

Good question

That’s a good question. I am seeing it make steady inroads in the SMB market, but that just may be anecdotal. The fact that it integrates pretty easily with Office 2003/2007 seems to be a big selling point.

Some one mentioned to me that I should learn SharePoint as it was gaining momentum. But, I am yet to see a company using it – in my personal experience. Nor heard people talking about it much.

That Micro$oft will begin pushing it more and more in the coming years, its a very useful tool and enables companies to use it without having to have a web designer, or and html, asp, etc knowledge, unless of course you want it to do more. The company im currently working for doesnt use it as a main site but more as a departmental intranet, each department has its own SharePoint site that my department has made for them, we have also created several intranets for our customers using this, its a very useful tool, once you know how to use it.

I think we’ve had it for over 2 years now. It grew from being a few servers just for extranets with our clients (per case – we’re a law firm) to having a farm set up for the intranet and handling our recent merger.
It’s a collaboration server that’s easy to set up and maintain.
I’ve heard of several other companies get even more use out of it, but I declined to work there…

Or an IT manager.
I had a staff member install the OS on the server, turn on Sharepoint and set me up as the first user and admin.
I created all the subsequent users, set up databases, played with templates, modified templates etc.
I had one developer who ran projects got crazy with extensions, but most of our needs can be filled by one of the templates available – MS created some new ones that are free on the web that add interesting functionality.

We use it to store documents as they go through the project lifecycle.
Once they are finished, they are published in a number of formats – CD, online library accessable by webrowser (not yet converted to sharepoint but probably will be).
We don’t need anything really fancy, we don’t do parrallel development in docs. Just check in, check out, lock, increment the version. In sharepoint its either on or off.

I thought you might also want to browse this list of SharePoint Services articles/downloads on TechRepublic, in case you missed them.
