After a virus was detected and removed from this system, the ability to share drives or files is no longer an option. Nor can file and print sharing be enabled.
How is the best way to restore this feature to the operating system?

Right click on Network Neighborhood, in the Properties make sure the Primary Network Logon is Client for Microsoft Networks, check that File and Print Sharing are both enabled. Next, check that the TCP/IP properties of the network card are correct, particularly the IP address and Subnet Mask. Next, open Windows Explorer and right click on all the drives you want to share. In the drop-down dialog box click on Sharing and ensure the drives are shared.

File and Print sharing cannot be enabled. Sharing does not show up on the drop down menu. The properties on the TCP/IP are set correctly.

Go into the control panel and networking.
Remove the Check marks on Share My files and Printers if they are checked and then reboot.
Once booted, go back in and check the boxes again to reload the sharing options.

Some of the more malicious viruses out there will rename system files. Even after the virus has been removed, those files no longer function. I would suggest you reinstall win98. Your first clue will be that you will only get so far before the installation hangs. In that case, your master boot record has been infected and thereby protected by remnants of the virus. Save any important files on your puter, do a search on google.com for a file called clearhdd.exe. You will find it on a hard drive manufacturers site. Running this util from a boot disk will wipe your drive clean to factory condition, then fdisk, format and reinstall.
Good luck!Mike
ps. sounds harsh but it saves alot of time.

Reinstall the NIC card driver, your driver may be corrupted by the virus….
After putting a fresh driver..try to set up you network configuration Enable file and print sharing. If you are using static IP address used it. Your Primary Network Log on should be Clients for Microsoft Networks.
Share your Drive….
Share your Printer….You’re done…
If not done, the virus is still there, and Anti-Viral Software can’t detect it..

Keeping a second system updated with Norton antivirus allows me to scan a possibly infected hdd with a known clean one, thereby eliminating the need to fdisk, format, and reinstall the OS. Find a friend to scan with!
