Small C partition on NT server

By mcoya ·
The previous incompetent sys admin made a 1 gig root partition that is filling up. Does anybody know how to merge free space into that existing partition so that i have more space. I'm running NTFS, and disk utilities like partition magic will notwork with NTFS.

Make sure this 1Gb partition is not FAT, a lot of admins did this years ago, supposedly to make troubleshooting easier ?
Partition Magic will resize both FAT and NTFS partitions.

best solution is do not install any programs ,store data on c drive.
move page file to other drive .also set temp internet file on other drive.
If possible uninstall program from c: drive & install it on other partition.

I don't think the previous sys admin was incompetent. Keeping the OS partition small forces you to NOT install program files in the same partition. That helps prevent fragmentation. Like the previous respondent said...no files, apps or data in the OS partition and move temp and page files to another partition. Page files are even faster when set up on a separate drive.

I think your previous sys admin was on the right track!

if resizing the partition is your choice of action, try Server Magic, works like a charm.

Do you have a good backup server that can totally backup/restore the system? If so, you could simply do a full backup [probably with an open file agent] and either put in a new hard drive, or repartition the one that is there. I would recommend chosing a new hard drive, in case anything goes wrong.

On the other hand, perhaps you should just solve the problem of why the system partition is filling up, as the original admin did not intend it to be used this way.
