Solitaire Junkies

By drb ·
It has been reported to me (via a somewhat reliable source) that a couple of users are certified solitaire junkies. I am on an NT 4.0 network and would like to somehow monitor this.

Is there a way I can see when and for how long a user is playing solitaire? The 'When' part of my question is especially important to me b/c if it they play during breaks or lunch I don't want to place any restrictions or uninstall the games.

Thank you

Create a publicly accessible hidden share and make sure the user's can write to it.

Copy the utility ntimer.exe from the resource kit to their system32 directory. Create a batch file to run ntimer and hange the shortcuts to run the batch file. Afriend of mine wrote a utility to run files without presenting a button in the taskbar, but without it, the batch file button will be noticeable. The batch file would look something like this:
@echo off
if exist %tmp%\sollog.txt del %tmp%\sollog.txt
echo %username% > %tmp%\sollog.txt
ntimer sol.exe >> %tmp%\sollog.txt 2>>&1
type %tmp%sollog.exe >> \\server\logshare$\logfile.txt
del %tmp%\sollog.txt >nul 2>&1

That will create a log in the temp directory with the user name, let them runsolitaire, but record the timing in the log file and then put the results with the user's name in the logfile on the server.
