On the positive side...

...if this is the worst thing that happens to you all day/week, you're making out a lot better than most.

30 minutes to restore a DC is pretty good. Make sure you note that come review time!

you should play around with ESXi

by Forum Surfer In reply to Could be worse

You may not have automated failover, but with a manual switch or restore it should take even less than 30 minutes!

Will look at that

is this just the free ESXi you download form VMWare or the bought version?

While ESXi is free,

I don't think you can manage the host server or it's guest systems without the 'for pay' supporting VM product. If you already have that product, you should be good to go. Otherwise...

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

"A snapshot a day makes disaster recovery play"

Got a BDC and an old SQL 2K server virtualized and have had to "recover" them after the host array failed (VM storage only.) The longest thing in the process was formatting the array :).

you snapshot to another array and not the failed one?

Collapse -

Nope, snapshots are on the array

by Charles Bundy In reply to I assume...

I backup the array to an LTO3 loader. The snapshot activity is scripted (and regularly scheduled) such that I can restore cohesive machine state after the restore.

I probably should put them elsewhere to get an inter-day restore of VM, but these particular machines don't really need more than yesterday's state for disaster recovery.

For those who might be interested in what G-Man is getting at: Snapshots are a way of ensuring stable VM after an "undesirable" event. Most times the event is just undoing a configuration or software install. In this case it was a nasty loss O bits. :)

We had a major storm

by maecuff In reply to Spending the day

And we have almost no power at work. I got sent home to work.

What a hardship.

Don't take it so hard

by jdclyde In reply to We had a major storm

I know you are crushed, but you will get through it!

Haven't been looking at the weather, local or national, so didn't realize storms were coming through.

Hoping the rain stays away. Both boys are at camp this week.
