    starting a trusted domain

    I have two NT4 PDC servers on the same network running only TCP/IP. One server is at SP4 and the other is at SP5. The SP5 server can configure either a trusted or trusting domain for the SP4 server, however when trying to establish either a trusted or trusting domain on it the SP5 server returns ‘Access denied’ Can anyone help me resolve this trust issue. THKS

      Primary domain controller. Well If I am not mistaken you can only hae one on a domain. SP5 will atempt the take over like with the way Browse master works. I say demote the NT 4 with service pack 4 and see what happens. If I am mistaken then I am totally mis understanding your ?

      Your SP4 might be using 40-bit encryption while the SP5 is using 128-bit encryption. Obtain the SP4 128-bit version from Microsoft at:

      http://support.microsoft.com/support/ntserver/128Eula.asp

      access denied errors … You’re undoubtedly using the generic administrator UserID versus a UID that has Domain Admin Rights. The Administrator SID of one domain Does not match the one from the other and therefore access is denied. Try setting up the trust with a Domain Admin UID in each Domain. It’ll work

      Are you logged in with an account that has admin rights? Make sure you log in as a Domain Admin. Are you setting a password on these trust relationships that you’re trying to create? It is possible to set a password on the trust relationship. You will not be able to create the trust unless the opposite side types the same password. Passwords for trusts are case sensitive. Doesn’t sound like a Service Pack issue to me though!

      One other thought. Make sure you’re typing your domain names correctly. To create a trust where Domain1 trusts Domain2, go to User Mangler on Domain2. Under “Trusting Domains” type Domain1, give it a password if you wish. Open User manager on Domain2, under “Trusted Domains” type Domain2. Type in the password that you typed on the previous step. If a trust can be created, it should give you a confirmation message. This relationship means that users in Domain2 can access resources in Domain1 if they have been given permission.
