This is most likely a hardware (HW) problem.
Boot the computer with minimum HW requirement, which means CPU, CPU fan, RAM(s), Video card, and HD. You may disable “Boot Floppy Seek” in BIOS. If you do not get the Protection Error (PE), then you knowthe HW you disconnected caused the problem. You then install one HW at a time to find which one is the bad guy.
If you still gets the PE, you need to replace one HW at a time until the PE message goes away. You MUST have known good spare part.
Start with the CPU, Motherboard (M/B), RAM, and then the Video card. These are in the order of the most likely culprits. In terms of convenience, start with the Video card, RAMs, CPU, and then the M/B. The hard drive is the last one to test. If you do not have any spare part, take it to the specialist and have him do the troubleshoot.

      1) Was ME installed clean or as an upgrade?

      2) When you say that at first it booted fine, do you mean the system worked completely?

      Dump Me.
      Opt for XP.
      Boot from CD.
      Do a complete Xp install.

If it is not hardware, it would be software. Go and find the latest program called “bootvis.” I have a copy if you want. If you can boot somehow, like into safe mode, you can install this program and it will record everything from start to finish (or crashes). Then you can view the log, even in DOS, and see what was the last few entries. It may find that a network adapter is causing the problem (had the same thing with my 98 system).
If I remember correctly, ME does not have DOS. If you are not running under NTFS, then make sure you have a 98 boot disk (you SHOULD ALWAYS have this disk) so you can boot into DOS. The 98 boot disk can become a very important tool. I use it on my XP system.
      Let me know.
