    talling new Maxtor HD

    Locked

    by aubej ·

I am installing a new Maxtor HD in a new PC. When the PC boots up, the HD is recognized, but when trying to access it (c: prompt) it can not access it. The system gives an ‘invalid drive error’. I am fairly new to this, so any help would be appreciated.

The diak needs partitioned and formatted. un the fdisk program from a dos boot disk, and set up a primary partition.

Then run the format program, with the /s option to make the disk bootable.

      cheers

You may just want to use the Maxtor Max Blast utility that came with the hard drive to set it up for use. The software is easy to use and is self explanitary.

      Good Luck!

There are some step that you need to complete to see this hard drive.

      1. With a boot disk you need to run FDISK

      2. After FDISK you will need to format the drive. ie a:\format c: /s

      3. If you need to be step through this feel free to contact me via email.

Replacing or adding a hard drive is not as simple as plugging in the drive.
Is it an IDE family drive? If you are adding an IDE drive, you have to decide which drive will be the master and which will be the slave and then set the drive jumpers accordingly. The connector you use on the ribbon cable MAY also be a factor for you to decide. After that, the system BIOS needs to recognize the drive. Most systems auto-config the BIOS, but some don’t. Next you decide whether you will create one large hard drive or several smaller logical drives. Whether your system is capable of FAT32 or FAT16 will be helpful when you try to determine that. Then you need to partion the drives with FDISK. This is where you create one large drive or several smaller logical drives. If the drive will be the system MASTER, you need to make the primary partion active. Then you format the drive. Once again, if this will be the system MASTER, you need to make the drive bootable. Use the /s switch when you run format.

      CONTINUED….
You now have a usable hard drive.
An easier alternative would be to use the partioning software provided by MAXTOR. It will make this task much simpler.
I would also like to recommend you thoroughly read the instruction booklet that accompanied the drive. As someone who is new to this procedure you may find it fascinating to understand exactly what you are doing.

Okay, that second answer is write if the HDD is new it almost definetly came with their boot disk.
All you do is put the disk in, and start the computer up and the program walks you through everything.
Just have to hope that your bios is not set to not try to boot off disks.
If you need a compy of the disk email me at Allswell@looksmart.com
