Tech Perspective: Will Intel still rule?

Intel continues to dominate the server market for machines with x86 processors. But according to Gartner’s predictions, you can expect an increasing presence of non-Intel technology in the traditional Intel-based server market. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Transmeta have the potential to give Intel competition in the areas of high-density servers, server appliances, and 64-bit computing.

What percentage of your servers use x86 processors versus other types of processors? What has been your experience with Intel’s products? How will AMD- and Transmeta-based servers affect your buying decisions? What are your current impressions of AMD and Transmeta processors?

You can read the related Gartner article, which will be posted 3 A.M. Monday, at

For over 18 years, Intel has been in 100% of the servers that I sell and support. The only reason that my clients would change to a different processor would be SIGNIFICANT or performance difference.

I would have no compelling reason to sell other processor based products unless I was offered enough evidence to prove that the INDUSTRY STANDARD was the poorer choice.

AMD will continue to make inroads in the marketplace and I imagine will make some impact but I do not see Intel being overtaken.

Oh, what does it matter? Intel/AMD? It’s like back in the “old days” when we argued about IBM PC, or “clone”.

I really like my AMDs. I have absolutely no problem recommending them.

In a “corporate” environment, however, on a $3000 system, $250 is the (retail list) price of a typical AMD CPU, and $350 for the equivalent Intel. Just for the sake of $100 I doubt that we would diverge from the typical Intel box. There’s no advantage. No disadvantage either. For the sake of the $100 these are equivalent. What matters is issues like: application support, 3rd party and internal tech supportability, not the tattoo on one of hundreds of components inside the box.

I think it is useful to think of servers and server appliances as two distinct categories of devices.

For servers running a variety of software from different vendors, and particularly for those running some flavor of Windows, I don’t see Intel’s market share eroding any time soon. Our purchasing decisions for servers, however, will continue to be brand-based rather than CPU-based and I think we wouldn’t have any problems going to a non-Intel CPU that was adopted and supported by our preferred manufacturer.

On the server appliances, we’re even more ambivalent. To be honest, I don’t even know whose CPU is in our firewall appliance. Intel? AMD? MIPS? StrongARM? It really doesn’t much matter and it certainly did not enter intothe purchasing evaluation.

To increase market share, the AMD and Transmeta folks are going to have to convince the manufacturers to use their chips and I think it is very unlikely I’ll ever have a reason to second-guess those decisions. I purchase for performance and functionality and trust the manufacturers to make the right decisions as to architecture and specific components to be used.

I am slowly migrating to AMD. Have started first with workstations and have ordered my first non-Intel server last week. Have not had any issues with AMD execpt with Win95.

Our company only uses Intel Processors, and at home I have 2 Intel based machines, one soon to be retired AMD based machine. I have found earlier AMD offerings to be flaky at best with multimedia and overall stability. As for the new AMD offerings,I will let others’ experiments and the results shape future purchasing decisions at home. I think however first time PC buyers will be easily lured away from Intel based home PCs from now on.
