This country was built on the sweat of Unions !

By fnm48 ·
For all those "uninformed" out there (and judging by your response to the Unionize IT Blog, you are uninformed), Unions built this country.
For if it weren't for the unions, "Management" would be making little or no money with no benefits at all...Professionals and unions "are" a perfect match (because Unions don't take just anybody). You need credentials to join one. I've been on "both sides of the fence" and believe me with corporate greed at a new high, unionize or get used and abused friend ! It's not about the money, it's about respect for a good days work !If anyone disagrees, let them work in a non-union sweat shop(like my Mom did)for less than $70 per week with conditions that the homeless would reject ! Her Vacation was getting "layed-off" for 2 weeks a year and collecting un-employment !So, get your facts straight, before you dis unions...

Back in 1960 if you made $10,000 per year ..............

by sleepin'dawg In reply to My Father made $70 a week ...

you were considered a big shot and successful. Nowadays, even janitors are making $20,000 per year but the purchasing power of that, is probably less than the average 50s salary. An interesting minor item, go into any outlet in any town that relys on the auto industry as its core industry and within a week of the announcement of a new contract you will find most of the prices have increased by 10%. I read that somewhere and wish I could remember where but as the article pointed out a 10% increase in prices was always in excess of what the new contract was worth. The effect is of taking a step forward so you can take two steps back. For a while there in the past few years the economy was in a slump. Did you notice inflation was minimal except for petroleum products??? Now the economy has picked up and the unions are making demands again. Notice the rate of inflation this year compared to last year??? Enough said. You know my feelings regarding unions. X-(

Speaking of salaries

(All adjusted for inflation, of course.)

Archie Bunker also made more money than Fred Flinstone. However, Fred did make more than Al Bundy, but not much more. But then again, even Fred Sanford made more money than poor old Al Bundy.

Homer Simpson ALSO made more money than Ward Cleaver. But Ward's house was much nicer, don't you think? And his wife was much more attractive as well -- and she could even talk jive.

Andy Taylor (Sheriff) made more than Homer did, but not as much as Rob Petrie. George Jefferson, however, put all those guys to shame, just raking in the dough. But J.R. Ewing literally took George to the cleaners when it came to earnings.

On that token....

How much does George Jetson make? :)

He wasn't on the list that I found.

Did they use money back in that future world? Did Spacely Sprockets actually pay him?

Didn't they use the Euro as currecny in the Jetsons?

So you are saying criticising unions is unpatriotic now ?
I was in a union for 19 years in the UK, paid my dues and they did alright by me personally, but they didn't build anything except a heathly bank balance and a job for life for their officials.

10,000 members who voted the mealy mouthed whining two faced back stabbing self serving gits into that position took it right up the *** though.

Once the real labour movement became unncessary, unions became political. Officials became politicians and their entire reason for existance was remodeled so the b'stards running them could keep their faces in the trough.

Don't ask me to trust or believe in a politician, it isn't going to happen.

Few are claiming that unions weren't important.

by TonytheTiger In reply to This country was built on ...

But they have become an albatross around the neck of productivity.

Jobs can become obsolete, and so can institutions. The union is the blacksmith of institutions.

Get real. nobody has worked for that wage in years.

A lot of things have changed since then and union have outlived their usefulness now.
