This won't happen again in our lifetime

By M_a_r_k ·
Tonight (actually Wednesday morning) at 2 minutes and 3 seconds after 1 AM....

01:02:03 04/05/06

Something this wild has happened less than 20 times in the history of the universe. And it won't happen again for exactly 100 years. I don't know about you, but I'm going to stay up until 1:03 AM just so say I can say I was part of this mind-blowinging confluence of numbers. So there you have it. Useless information that you can impress all your friends with.

Is it cheating...

by onbliss In reply to This won't happen again i ... set the alarm for 12:45am and not stay awake till the particular moment? Need to check out with my 7-yr old, if he would be interested.

Of course it's cheating

But you could move your clock forward by 17 minutes and simulate the exhiliration that the rest of world will feel at that precise time of 01:02:03 04/05/06.

If Onbliss sets his alarm for 12:45, they need to make sure to stay awake for the 17 minutes.

Rest of the world?

by neilb@uk In reply to Of course it's cheating

Colin and others will have done it, seen it, gone to bed and got up again before the magic numbers get anywhere near here, let alone to Texas.

Except for the West Coast, everybody will beat you to it! I wouldn't bother to wait, celebrate it on Kamchatka time! Ooops! Too late!

Ha Ha!

I think I posted too late

for our Aussie friends. I posted it Tuesday morning US Central time. That was something like Friday afternoon in Australia. ? The big event happened and they didn't even realize it.

Actually, Mark____(insert own bloody underscores)

I was having a small wind-up. The Aussies and we Europeans use DD/MM/YY so we don't get the magic day until May 4. The Japanese, who use YY/MM/DD had it two years ago on May 6.

The Kamchatkans, I hear you ask? I have no idea!

Let me know if it's worth it so I can decide for myself on May 4.

06/06/06 works for all timezones

Well, crap

by M_a_r_k In reply to Actually, Mark____(insert ...

You have your date notation backwards, huh? When will the rest of the world learn to get on the same page as the U.S.? Most of the rest of the world already speaks our language. I suppose it's only a matter of time before everyone goes by our date notation, too.

I've come across the inconistent date notation before. I was once working a software project with part of the development team being in France. They would sometimes forget about the project coding standards and would comment the history log in a module's header with the funny DD/MM/YY notation. It caused a lot of confusion and problems when we were trying to figure out if a code change was made before or after a particular date. Like, was that change made on Mar 2 or Feb 3? X-(

Excuse me! EXCUSE ME!

Whi invented time? Where is it all referenced from? I'll tell you, it's about ten miles from where I'm sitting - Greenwich of GMT fame. WE get to say what's right!

Actually, MSB<->LSB sound right in either direction, UK or Japanese. Mixing it up, like you do? Now that's weird!

btw It's pronounced "Grennitch"

Time inventors

by M_a_r_k In reply to Well, crap

The Chinese invented fireworks. They probably invented time, too. And "grennich mean time" should be referenced from Texas, not the middle of some ocean on the other side of the planet.
