TRers want to join up and play World of Warcraft?

    Locked

    by jmgarvin ·

Ok, those of you on TR do you want to play WoW together, start a guild, and have some fun?

We’ll start on a new low pop server (PvE or PvP) and crank out some new characters.

Duskwood for PvE and Aegwynn for PvP?

    Who’s interested?

      If there is critical mass

      by Mark W. Kaelin ·

In reply to TRers want to join up and play World of Warcraft?

I’ll join you if we get a critical mass of players. I’ve got young characters on about 5 different servers for various reasons, so I don’t want to do all those low-level quests again unless I have a good reason. 😉

Also, I don’t particularly like PvP servers, so I would vote for the PvE and stick to Battlegrounds for player battles.

25 would be better if everyone can play with any frequency or ability to schedule. That way, over time we can do any content in the game.

I’ve been working on a single Alliance Warlock for the past 3 months and would really like to start a new Horde character. That’s my only request since I haven’t done any of the low-level Horde quests.

PVE or PVP doesn’t matter to me. I’m on a PVP server now, so PVE might be a nice change. I’d like to see us get atleast 10-15 people involved before we pull the trigger.

You got me curious about this a while ago, but getting life in order has kept it in the back burner up until now.

First, what is system requirements to play this on a linux desktop?

Second, do you still have your writeup on how to get a linux desktop going to run this?

Third, what time zone are people in to get this going together? I would assume you have to meet together and run as a pack to do this? I am in EST, and would be more than happy to push Diablo2 off to the side and take this up.

Someone correct me if there is a hack I don’t know about, but there is no official Linux client for World of Warcraft. Although there is an official Mac client.

It costs around $29 for the box and $14.95/month, with the first 30-days free with the box.

I don’t have the box in front of me so I can’t give you the details on requirements, but it scales well so it runs on almost any configuration.

Server to select, compatable races and so on.

Anyone running this on 512M Ram? How much of a hit is this on your system? Got an AMD 1900 I do believe. Video has 256M so I am not concerned with that.

I don’t know how other people feel about it, but even though I play games and have for about 25 years – I don’t get too serious about it – it is supposed to be entertainment.

So having people new to the experience is fine with me. Unlike many MMORPGs that have come before, World of Warcraft has a much better learning curve. For the most part you can jump right in. Bill just started playing a few weeks ago – I’ll let him speak to that.

More RAM is better, but I think 512 MB works okay. I have 1 GB so I can’t say for sure.

          The funny thing about noobism

          by jdclyde ·

In reply to No problem with noobs

I play D2, and every punk kid in there calls anyone with a lower level character a noob on a regular basis. The tune changes when I bring my 84 pally or 83 sorc and PK them! 😀 (only the most obnoxious ones of course!)

They forget EVERYONE was a noob at EVERYTHING at one point.

I spend as much time helping new people as I do playing for myself.

I gave up expansion for d2 because the people were even worse.

It is mostly the lowering level of people playing that is making me lose interest in D2. Having a group of peers to meet with would be an improvement.

Hey Mark, think you could sometime do a quick experiment? knock your system down to 512 and do a round to see the difference? I am saving towards my NEXT system and would rather NOT put anything else into it if I don’t have to. 😀

1gb will mean less zone lag and shorter load times. I played with 512mb for a while so it is doable.

Helping noobs out is no problem…you just gotta let me know. The nice thing is that WoW has a pretty shallow learning curve…It’s best to play a melee class to start with and then move on to the casters, but it’s up to you.

might as well see what the motherboard will handle as far as a CPU while I am at it. Currently have an AMD 1900, if memory serves me correctly.

Having extensive background with many of the role playing games over the last FEW decades, adapting should not be an issue, with just a little guidance to avoid common noob mistakes.

Yes, and the most common mistake with people that create casters is they don’t take the time to read (what is that?) what ALL the spells are and how they work.

This weekend is shot with my boys birthday all night lan party for tomorrow night! 😀 B-)

How soon till you actually start gathering?

When you have a decent group, how long does it take to get an adequate character going?

If you make an “oops” on a character and want to start over with a new one, is it easy to transfer any accumulated wealth/weapons/armor/misc goodies? Is it as easy as handing to a friend, and then come back with new character?

How about we plan for a Weds start?

          by jmgarvin ·

In reply to time to go through my system

Ya, picking up on casters isn’t tough if you’ve had a little experience with them in the PnP world.

I think we should maybe meet up this coming Weds on the Duskwood Server. That would be the 12th. Does that work for everyone? Now we need a time…How about we use PST time just to make life a little easier?

Once you have a good group it doesn’t take long. Getting up to level 10 is a breeze, from 10 to 20 it isn’t too bad, it slows down from 20 – 30, but picks back up again in the lower/mid 30s. From 40 – 50 is it not too bad, but your 50’s last forever. Toons cap at 60.

If you make an oops, it usually isn’t hard to undo. You simply have to pay to unassign the points and start over. Transfering weath isn’t hard either…you can either mail it or have a friend hand it to your new character. However, most items are “soulbound,” which means only that specific character can wear/use it.

Money is pretty easy to send around.

          by jmgarvin ·

In reply to pst is two hours behing est?

          For GP from EST:
          Central is -1
          MST is -2
          PST is -3

So between 9pm and 12pm EST is

          6pm – 9pm PST

As for soulbound, ya Blizzard learned VERY quickly that your economy can go to pot when you allow players to see items on Ebay. Look at Lineage 2 😉

‘Course you can still buy gold, but IMHO that has only minorly effected the economy.

In reply to Proposed Time Schedule

I usually play between 9 and 12 Eastern anyway, so that’s good for me.

I’ve recruited my brother to join us.

We have already created toons on the Duskwood server and have got them up to 6 and out of the new born areas.

Up to 10 grouping isn’t really necessary – and we know the quests by heart so we fly through them. Once we get a group on, we can help the new players find things and show them around.

One word of warning, as a new server the newborn areas are packed. If you haven’t played before it won’t seem strange, but for me it was just plain wierd to see all those characters.

I’m going to put out a call to my old guild, some of which have WoW accounts playing different servers, to see if they’d like to join us.

BTW I am playing as Elkwinkarma – undead Warlock
My brother is Dozark – Orc Hunter

I can play something else if we need tanks or healers.

very very good, and in others it plain sucks. The class balancing for tanks is much better now, and decent gear is easier to obtain. Trade skills are more usefull, and generate gear players will want to use. On the downside some melee classes are still very unbalanced for PvP. I’m up for re rolling on a new server to join up. Any thing in particular that would be useful?

      thanks for the invite tho,jmgarvin

much like paying for Windows (and after bad experiences with most other pay-for-play online gaming), I can’t see paying for WoW.

I play Shadowbane for free online, and enjoy it.

Sorry I didn’t reply almost 3 years ago. I must have been sedated or something lol

I was getting ready to join in on the fun, but had hardware issues.

After that, life expenses came up and I gave my boys the choice, $15 a month for ONE of them to play at a time for one game (WoW) or $10 a month for xbox live for them both to play any game they wanted. We went with the xbox live.

          paying for online games

          I just can’t do it.

I would rather suffer the occassional 15 second Nike or Dell ad that Shadowbane throws in the startup or shutdown.

But, I played a few online games. Sims Online was the one that really burned me. $10 a month for me to go online and have fun and get away from the world.

Then, I noticed that the “food shack” was now a McDonalds. I got pissed. I called up customer support and cancelled and told them “If I wanted the real world, I can go to McDonalds a few blocks from my house.”

Shadowbane went free 2 years ago or so. It’s a great game, considering it’s 5-6 years old. The only issue now is lag issues with their DB farm. Somehow, their DBs can’t figure out how to keep redundant datasets swap between them. They try to do data management while game play is still going on.

Anyways, I can’t pay for any game on a recurring basis anymore.

the boys get a lot of use out of it, and if you get it by the year, it is only about $50.

Soon as they move out, I will be getting cable tv shut off, though.

get my cable shut off. i got satellite. i’m just waiting for the cable company to come bury a new cable here and i’m set. i am still gonna keep a low-end cable modem as a backup so if the DSL goes down. But, I am tired of the cable company here. they are a rip off.

Sure I’m in!, I’m a 56 Human Mage and I have no guild to play with! 🙂

With the free moves I’ll just move the character over!

All of the information in the original posts is still relevant. The TR guild was still ongoing when last curiosity drove me inquire.

So do any TR peeps still play? My wife and her brother don’t get to play much anymore due to work, so I am looking for more “regulars.” Im indifferent to server, but prefer PvP.

it is still valid, and they are still playing.

I suppose if I didn’t have multiple people in my house, requiring multiple accounts at a time, I would consider something like this.

        Maybe in a few years.
