tricking me computer
Lockedby birdmanjon · about 16 years, 2 months ago
I have an odd question… is there a way to make windows 2k look like xp to the programs, but not upgrade to or actually be xp or by running an emulator. (Like I just want to exchange system files,) but I am not sure witch ones or the easiest way to do this.
I ask because I strongly dislike the some of the changes Microsoft made. However, increasingly I find my programs no longer compatible with 2k, such as my new mp4 player & c&c3, among others. I have a copy of xp home… (That is one of the reasons I dislike it so much, memory hog, lacking some functions I Use often, and I am just happier with 2k other than I?m losing compatibility)
As a side note I have been trying to learn lynx for a little while, but I am reluctant to put it on my good computer just yet, witch means I can?t play my newest games (although I can?t anyway unless I can trick my computer)
Any advice would be most appreciated, and thanks in advance.

How is Win2k supposed to act like XP? XP came afterwards! Hello McFly :^0

XP can run applications in older legacy versions of Windows using compatibility mode, but what’s you’re trying to do with Win2k is impossible..no ifs ands or buts.

That does not mean it can?t be done? surely, someone knows how.
I would like to know what the consequences might be if I swapped some of the .dll ?s.-

the system will fail to boot and you’ll need to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS.
Like ManiacMan said, what you are asking is impossible. If you want the look and feel of XP, then install XP. Otherwise, you’re stuck with what you have. It is what it is.

why continue? You say you have a copy of XP, but dont want to install it.
Ok, then dont buy SW and HW that requires it!!!
or
get another system and build it with XP and you can have both
OR
run a virtual machine and have XP on that!
or
get a HDD bay, make it your primary, get 2 trays for it, ave a HDD for XP and a hdd for 2kthere are solutions

When you purchase SW

you should always look at system requirements. ManiacMan is right, you cannot do what you are trying to do.
Many files for the OS are stamped with what OS, and SP version it is compatible with. This is to keep the system stable (more or less). changing dll’s will only result in a loss of stability, or a complete OS failure.
Maybe you should spend some time looking at the SW requirements (or HW requirements if you want to attach it to your comp)…
Just a thought.
McFly — LOL — ManiacMan, you are a funny guy!!!

You have a valid point

My computer exceeds the min specs for the software… and for a while there was a long strech were if the box says its compatible with xp then it was compatible with 2k… And in the case of the mp4 player it did not specify an os other than “windows or mac”, no verision was specifed, untill I got it home and put in the cd, “you must be running xp home or better to install this software”… something like that. At first I thought this might just be for the videos, but no, you cant even use it as a flash drive without the software installed.
Any way thanks for taking the time to read my post.
So I am looking for a way around upgrading…
any suggestions? -

and for a while there was a long strech were if the box says its compatible with xp then it was compatible with 2k
You have this backwards. When XP was first new, software DESIGNED for older operating systems such as 98/2K would publish the fact that it was “compatible” with XP, meaning it might actually run on XP. Then, software vendors started making their software “designed” for XP and SOMETIMES it would be backwards compatible with Win2K, but not always. But, just because it was compatible with XP didn’t mean it would work on 2K. The software had to specifically state that it would run on 2K vs 98SE. Many did not.

The Crux of the Issue
by thechas · about 16 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Ok here’s a simpler one
Alright, we now have the crux f your problem defined.
W2K was built to be a “WORKSTATION” to replace Windows NT for business use. One of the issues with W2K is that is does lack some functions that games require.
If you want to use your computer for games, than you need XP.
One option would be to set up your system as a dual boot with W2K and XP. That way, you would maintain the functionality of W2K and have the features of XP you need for games.
As to changing a few system files to make W2K “look” like XP to software, that can’t happen. Once you start changing system files, the changes will cascade through all the OS files and the registry in order for your PC to function.

WHICH brand of LINUX are you trying, also W2K is crap
by computercookie · about 16 years, 2 months ago
In reply to tricking me computer
compared to XP, you can change XP to look like 98/W2K if you like.
Most major hardware/software providers were too busy writing drivers for XP when W2K was released as they knew that it coming at a certain date and MS had changed their policy and actually canvassed vendors to supply same.
Also I feel that it is accepted that a lot of hardware/software providers decided that it was a good opportunity to force users to purchase an upgrade for low end products.
You give know details of your hardware, so it’s difficult to advise you on how to upgrade!

W2k Crap?

In reply to WHICH brand of LINUX are you trying, also W2K is crap
I disagree with you saying W2K is crap. I use both W2K and Xp systems at work. The W2K are far more stable and faster on the same hardware than XP. However, I use XP at home because of the compatibility issues he is describing. W2K is a great OS for office environments, which it was designed for. It was never meant to be on a gaming system…

I use 2k and XP as well
by dumphrey · about 16 years, 2 months ago
In reply to W2k Crap?
and while in many cases 2k is faster, there are times when XP is faster. It seems to me that memory management on XP is alittle beter then in 2K, and XP deffinately makes better use of > 1Gb of ram. That being said, I am really not sure why birdmanjon is reluctant to switch to XP. XP SP2 is stable, well understood, and close enough to 2k in Classic Mode to have next to no learning curve at all.
