Trouble with Linksys BEFW11S4.2 AP

By rgrowcock ·
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 Ser. 2 wireless router/switch as my AP. Has been working flawlessly for the last 1 1/2-2 years on a home network.

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 that I use a D-Link Airplus (now an Airplus G) PCMCIA card. Over the last week, I have noticed a big drop in my connection from the Laptop. Off and On connection, dropped connection, etc. I thought it was the card, the laptop has been drop from the couch to the floor a couple of times, but has never bothered the connection. Eventhough the network card as a severe crack. Thought maybe the card had finally given up the ghost, so I went and bought a new card (G series).

If I am in the same room as the AP, I get a strong signal, but still get dropped. Although not as much as if I am in the Living room, 50 feet away.

Nothing has changed with the AP; I even downloaded and installed the latest firmware today. Thought that might be the problem, but it was the same firmware as before. Same problem as before.

I've tried to install and run WEP encryption, 128 bit, but same connection problems.

I also have a wired PC: all PCs run XP Pro SP2. The only problem I've seen with the wired PC is a slow down with the downloads, but not that much of a slow down.

I run my phone through my cable system, with no problems there.

I have run out of ideas, and am asking for some to try. Anyone have ANY thoughts? Has my AP died on me?

Just noticed this tonight. When downloading from the wired pc, my download speed is HALF what it was last week. Could this be a router going bad?

You have just mentioned you have reinstalled the drivers a couple of times lately. I have a D-Link dwl-650+ and had a similar problem, until I deinstalled the drivers, removed the card, made a clean boot, installed the drivers, did another reboot and only then added the card. No problem now.

Tried all of this, still didn't work. Ended up buying new AP. Worked!
