Ugrading a Toshiba laptop to Win98

By Blackcurrant ·
Hi

I have a Toshiba Satellite 220CS, running Win95. I have tried to upgrade it to Win98, but received a setup error message stating that the Toshiba Tools 95 was incompatible with Win98. I have been to the Toshiba website and have upgraded the BIOS and downloaded and installed the Toshiba tools for Windows 98.

However, upon rebooting after installing the tools, an error message appears in a DOS screen stating:

Assertion Failure (file Find.c, line 9999) "OpenMsg( psFilename ) == CCaok"
and when I try to upgrade the OS after this I get the same setup error message stating that the Toshiba tools for Windows 95 are incompatible with Win98.

Does anybody know what I need to do to install Win98 on this computer?

Many Thanks.

Hi The Chas. Thanks for answering. As I stated in the first answer, I cannot determine how to uninstall the Tools for 95. There is no option in add/remove programs to do this, nor is there an entry under Start>Programs. I have also trawled the hard drive and tried various programs including the Toshiba utilities, but can find no reference to the Tools for 95.

I have upgraded a couple of Toshiba laptops in school. The method I used was to firstly used fdisk then format the disk thereby creating a clean environment for a fresh installation of Windows 98 best of luck

Hi Crowngreen, thanks for answering. I did not want to Fdisk, then reformat, then reinstall, because I would have to reinstall Win95, then install the upgrade edition of Win98, then reinstall all the various programs. What I am after is howto remove or to successfully upgrade the Toshiba Tools for Windows 95.

Upgrading laptop is most difficult to my judgement.

1. To preserve your documents, save all documents under new folder.
2. Save outlook express dbx files
3. save address book
4. save outlook express setting

Clean your laptop from all .exe, .com.
1. Enter DOS safe mode.
2. delete using deltree, deltree c:\windows
3. delete using deltree, deltree c:\progra~1 (program files folder)

Fresh install windows.
Install the tools and drivers afterward.

Hi VH_S, thanks for answering. As I have mentioned above, I am trying to install an upgrade edition of Win98. This requires a valid installation of an earlier version of Windows.

As to having to re-install W95 if you fdisk the drive;
If you have the W98SE upgrade version, all you need to do, is have the W95 CD on hand.

You boot from the startup disk, and run setup with the CD in place.
After setup starts, you will be asked to insert the W95 CD, and the installer will verify that you have a valid CD that qualifies for the upgrade.

As to uninstalling the Toshiba tools:
How willing are you to explore the registry?
What I do when I have software or drivers that just won't un-install themselves, is delete the registry entries related to the program, and remove the files from the hard drive.

CAUTION: Back up the registry before proceeding!
Regedit can make your PC unable to boot into Windows.

Start by searching for Toshiba, and when you find keys that have the tools listed, jot down some of the unique words in the keys before deleting them.
Then, search again, using the words from the keys to find related keys.
Watch out that you do not delete device driver keys.
Exit regedit, and delete the Toshiba tools files from the hard drive.

Run sysedit to verify that Toshiba tools are not envoked in the startup files.
You can either delete the line in the file, or place the letters rem and a space at the start of the line.

Re-boot, and verify that Toshiba tools is gone, and begin your W98 install.

Thanks. It looks as though I am going to have to fdisk and upgrade. Although I have no problem doing this I really did not want to have to do everything from scratch. Thanks for your valuable input.
