Upgrade to NetWare 5 or Microsoft

By dgw ·
Hi,

I am a new member, and I administor networks for a bunch of real estate offices. They are currently running NW 3.20, but need to upgrade since NW 3 is pretty much obsolete, and they need to add users.

The question is, should we go NW 5 (Small Business Suite) or Windows (NT or 2000 Server)?

Pros and cons would be appreciated. I am cross-posting this to the NT forum as well.

Thanks for your help.

Don

Everyone makes excellent points, but no one just comes out and says it... Does security, ease of administration, performance or scalability mean anything? If so, the only real choice is Novell.

Just my two cents.

Stan :)

I vote for Novell. we went from 3.12 to 4.11 then to 5 realitive easy.

Point nobody makes. you can rconsole to novell server from your desktop, you have to go to the server with M$. point.. I can make changes to our servers at other locations without leaving my desk. With M$ I have to put a lot of miles on my car to get to the server at other locations.

We've gone from NW 3.12 to 4.11 to 5.1 and have been using NT 4.0 since day one. I like both, but would recommend NW 5.1 .
Reasons: I feel NW is the better NOS by far and even though I started with NT, I think NW is easier to use.
One Gotcha: The reason we still have NT around is, some of our applications won't run on Netware.
(I have no exp. with Windows 2000 and am not looking forward to getting it)
Good Luck!
