USB 4 Gig thumb drive failures

By dellservicepro ·
I have some Sony brand MicroVault USB 2.0 4 gig "thumb drive" I obtained several of these from a friend returning from China. After a couple of uses, the drive acts like a cdrom. The Sony software does not work on this drive. The Sony data sheet accompanying the drive shows it to be a model number USM4GU2. I have carefully disassembled the drive and found inside two identifiable chips. the smaller (probably controller chip) is marked as follows:

The second and larger chip on the other side of the pc board is branded and marked as follows

p.s. For the first person supplying me with a working solution, I will send you one of these drives strictly as a token of my appreciation.

Not looking good:
Tried Sony's online Chat support, and it stumped them. They gave me 800 tech support line, turns out this model is only sold in India, not the US, which can be one reason it looks nothing like the other SOny drives on the web site.
He gave me a phone number for India tech support, but not sure I can justify calling that far to get blown off or told I am SOL. If someone wants to try, it is 9-111-6959600, although I do not know how you could dial that number and get past the first three numbers...
