Using 4Gb Harddrive on a new motherboard

I have a asus aliagpset motherboard with a 500 mhz cpu.

I decided to switch a harddrive from an older computer to the asus board.

hard drive: WD 4Gb
the new board picked up the harddrive and started win 98se. As it was going through the hardware detection phrase it encountered a file that was older than the one I was installing. I chose to replace the old with the new. Bad chose. when I reboot win will not start and i get “a write protection error” saying i must restart the sys.

I was able to boot from a disk and start a win98 reinstall. With a 500Mhz cpu it said that the installation will take 114 min. This seems to be an unusually long time to reinstall or do a clean install.

Do I need to reinstall the software that came with the motherboard?

Please explain why the slow reinstall of win98se and should I have done something differently.

Many times when I am reinstalling Win98se or other OS I have noticed that the initial installation time is over exaggerated. Once the “real” install has begun, the time is revised to a much lower and realistic figure.

The time varies when doing a clean install,it will give the maximum time to do a complete install and then readjust during the process as it proceeds through setup.

You did not say what type of system that you took the HD from. If you took it from an intel or via chipset, I would suggest removal of the Windows directory and do a complete fresh install. You do not need the old drivers so why have Windows load them. The easiest way to remove the directory is by using deltree. It is in your windows\system folder. Copy this to a floppy, boot with your boot disk, change disk and type the command. The command will be deltree /y c:\windows. Before you do this, why not copy the install disk to the hardrive. Copy the directory on the cd named WIN98 to say c:\WIN98. After doing this, remove the windows directory using deltree, then change to c:\win98 and type setup. Have your MB cd or diskette ready.Win98 may ask for it during the install.

The best thing to do, is to make a new installation. When you are moving the HD with the OS and installed programs from one PC to another one – you may experience a lot of problems. Win98 should detect the new hardware, but it not always happens. You may have problems with IRQs, and some programs referring to particular devices as e.g. internal/external modem, sound card, etc. Then again ? try to make a new installation of Win98 and reinstall the software supplied with your motherboard.

I think you misunderstood the warning message.
When you choose, Replace, the CD loads the old file over the new.
In a case like this we usually wipe the hard drive, because sometimes the registry will have corrupt information in it.
(We use the Zero Fill option on the hard drive manufacturer’s utility floppy.) (This is a free download.)
This is starting from zero, (literally) but it insures a clean install.
Yes, you need to load the drivers that came with the motherboard. Particularly the AGP and UDMA (IDE) drivers.

The slow time is an estimate based on the initial check of the system. It is based on the amount of software and configurations you have in windows already.

The setup program found many programs and registry entries and estimated the time it would require to keep track of all the changes to the original setup.

The time will also change after the setup continues and will decrease quickly.

Windows will be able to operate with the generic driver however you should reinstall the software for maximum speed.

Assuming you follow the instructions Chris gave, you will need to know more before you can load Windows again. Once you have written zeros to the drive you will need to partition and then format the drive. I would recommend that once you have donethis you copy all the files in the WIN98 directory on the CD to a WIN98 directory on the Hard Disk. If you have drivers for the Motherboard (UATA) you can copy them to the same directory on the Hard Drive and they should install automatically when you install Windows.

Most of the time on installations are based on statistics, it doesn’t mean that it will be exactly the time it will use. It depends of your hardware and your space available on your hard disk. Anyway, for sure it won’t take that long, you won’t needto install the software that comes with this mainbord. Perhaps latter on you’d like to review this software.
Asus is a very good and expensive brand, I use Asus on most of my servers and my 2 personal Pcs got Asus as main parts, including Video Card, Mainboards and SCSI Cards.
Your problem was probably a conflicting driver, that’s why you had to re-install windows, I hope you’ve made a good backup.
