Using ethernet card

I am now using the dial up telephone modem.
The phone company sent me a new high speed modem
theat uses the ethernet card. Can I use both
of these or do I have to turn off one or does
the high speed modem do away with the other. They
will be on the same line? Also how do you turn
on the ethernet card I have it but it does not
show on my computer. Thanks Sharon

You can use both in the machine,you will have to turn disable the modem,no the Ethernet settings will not override the modem per say.
Before trying to setup read the booklet that came with the ethernet card
First you will need to open the case
Insert the Ethernet card into a slot that is open
Re-connect the computer power and dboot computer
The windows operating system should flash new hardware wizard,make sure you have the diskthat came with card,this is the software to be installed
New Hardware Found
Select option Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer
The ethernet card will come with diskette or cd
When prompted for disk insert in appropiate drive,press OK
If computer has no name or workgroup name click OK
In the Network window,name your computer and give it a workgroup name or accept default,donot click OK
Select the Configuration tab and then press the down-arrow beside Primary Network field.Select Windows logon,then press Close button
Windows will copy some files from the Windows Operating System cd,you will need it handy
If computer does not find files you have to specify the path to file (ex.E:\win98),E:represents the letter of your cd-rom
Once files are installed you will be prompted to rebootIt should restart with Windows logon screen
If attempting to do this for the first time get a friend familiar with installing hardware to assist you.

Hi Sharon –

Sounds like you got DSL access to the internet. Can you use both of these? Sure…but why…both offer just a connection to the internet, although ones going to be a heck of a lot faster. Without getting real technical, DSL (high speed) just uses a different frequency over your existing phone line to connect as opposed to your modem that needed exclusive use of your phone line to connect. The two will be totally independent of each other, however you’ll probobly want to keepthe modem setup in case something goes wrong with your highspeed setup.

As far as connecting to the ethernet card, there should be nothing special your should do. The card is just like a video or audio card with the drivers already installed, the only thing you should have to do is just plug the cable in. There’s nothing you have to do turn it on or off. Of coarse if the ethernet card doesn’t have the drivers installed, you have a completely different problem altogether.

I just got DSL at home and here is the deal, your dial-up modem and DSL modem share the same line. If your service is MSN, if your DSL goes down for some reason, you are supposed to be able to use the same modem to get dial-up service. If you want, you can use both of them, you just have to set-up a dial up connection with your modem (not DSL), with MSN this is done with the supplied software.

As far as your network card goes, check your device manager for network adapters. You might have it installed and not realize it (I did this once).

Hi,

Its best to remove the old modem card (or unplug it if its external) because you’ll never use it again. It IS possible to use both, but you’ll get a very small increase in speed (10% or less)and probably need to continue to pay for Dial-up access – like you were before and in addition to your new connection – and at the very least you’ll be paying for the phone calls. DSL is generally free for that.

AND is messy to set up. AND one of the benefits of DSL is that you can use your phone normally while connected to the net. You’d lose that if you dialed up as well as using the DSL connection.

BUT. There is a very good chance that you wont have been supplied with an IP address – like the instructions suggest.

If thats the case, then when you’re configuring TCP/IP all you need to do is click on the “Obtain an IP address automatically” from figure 6 of the instructions.

you may find keeping your modem very handy if you use your computer as your fax as i do. other than that there is really no use for it unless your isp still offers a dialup connection as a backup to your dsl service.

Sharon,

Did the phone company send you an internal or external ethernet card? If it is internal and you are running Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP…the computer should recognize the new hardware once you plug itin. It is called plug and play or by some cute marketer it has been coined PnP. Essentially, if you open the case, plug in the internal card in the PCI slot, turn the computer on, it should recognize the new hardware.

Anyway, if it is an externalmodem…I assume for DSL then you should find some kind of adapter that plugs into the computer. Once again, if you are running any of the above mentioned operating systems, it should be recognized when the computer is turned on.

Install the driver for the NIC. You can use both at the same time.
