Vacation

It varies on the position in which you are employed. 2 weeks to start with an extra week for every year maxing out at 4-5 weeks is common. If you are hired at a senior technical or management level you may start at a higher week level but the same ceiling applies.

At the consulting firm where I currently work, they give two weeks the first year, then two weeks + 1 day for every year after.

Year 1 = 10 days
Year 2 = 11 days
Year 3 = 12 days
Year 4 = 13 days - etc.

Oh yeah... we also get 6 paid personal days (also to be used as sick days); six regular holidays, plus any holidays that the client recognizes; education reimbursement ($2500 first year, $3500/year after that); full insurance program (medical, dental, vision, life, etc.); 401(k); and more. I don't believe that I've ever used more than 5-6 days vacation...

We're a nearly-800 member IS shop in an insurance company, following the corporate vacation guidelines. We allocate vacation as a monthly credit, as follows:
1 - 12 months: 1 vac day/month
13-60: 1.25 per month
61-132: 1.5 per month
133-204: 1.75 per month
... and so on, maxing out at 2.5 vacation days credited per month.

The guidelines indicate that:
- vacation can be accumulated and carried forward, but shouldn't generally exceed 18 months worth of accumulated credits.
- person is strongly encouraged to use at least 2/3 of annual allotment each year.
- up to 4 months worth of vacation credits can be used before earned

My company offers 2 weeks the first year (we can take 1 week after six months, but msut agree to stay on for the full year), then 2 weeks plus 1 day for each year after that. For example, after four years I get 2 weeks + 4 days. I think there's a maximum amount that can be earned, but I'm not sure what it is (I think it's four weeks). We can only carry over 40 hours from one year to the next, but we can use vacation in hourly increments (this is really nice if you need a half day off for something).
