virus for sexual inversion

By john.a.wills ·
I found this while doing some hunting after a lead in the Economist: http://harpend.dsl.xmission.com/harpending/1201/cochran.homosexuality.rants.pdf
Greg Cochran argues, quite persuasively, that homosexuality, by which he means sexual inversion, is caused by a virus. He does not discuss how the behaviorist methods of rectifying sexual inversion might overcome the virus's workings.

Well Ok

by Tony Hopkinson In reply to Dawgie style!

If you are defining marriage as the religious ceremony as opposed to a civil contract.
As for those who have a problem with gays getting married in church, the church is the problem not the gays. If they object to the civil contract they should be told to mind their own business.

I daresay the local shaman, witchdoctor, priest whatever was always invited to to put the stamp of the deity's approval on a marriage. But the original purpose of the ceremony was so all the other fella's in the community knew they could get filled in if they messed with the lady in question.

Okay Great...

by Jessie In reply to virus for sexual inversio ...

So now that we can postulate that homosexuality is viral in nature, we can stop trying to convert them and start looking for a vaccine to prevent homosexuality. After all, there's not a lot we can do for people who've been crippled by polio, but we don't prevent them from marrying each other either!

rectification

by john.a.wills In reply to Okay Great...

Rectification of sexual inversion is possible without vaccine. That is my reason for questioning Cochran's argument.

You claiming homosexuality can be cured?

by JamesRL In reply to rectification

Is that what you are trying to establish?

Of course I don't think its an illness so...

Retrification of sexual inversion?

by Oz_Media In reply to rectification

So correct me if I am wrong here, but you feel gays can be MADE straight? And your only argument is that it can't be a virus needing a vaccine as there are OTHER ways to turn gay people straight or 'CURE' them? aka televangelist style; "HEALED IN THE NAME OF JESUS! EVIL SPIRITS OOOOOOOUUUUT! GOD LOVES YOU, AMEN!!! I SAY, PRAISE THE LORD!!"

Is THAT what you are implying?

REALLY?

I've seen this claim before, Oz.

by Absolutely In reply to Retrification of sexual i ...

While waiting in line to buy my groceries, on the cover of some trash magazine, some nearly-famous twit claims to have been saved from the depravity of the homosexual lifestyle. Let's see john find solid evidence that this can be done with randomly selected practicing gays, not prejudicially selected gay members of fanatical religious cults.

Perhaps procreation isn't the only biological imperative...

by Jessie In reply to virus for sexual inversio ...

Survival is another biological imperative. Homosexuality is not unheard of in nature. It occurs mostly where there is a LACK of the opposite sex. Or too many of the same sex?

PERHAPS... homosexuality is a biological imperative of population control... PERHAPS we'll see more and more homosexuals as the human population of the planet gets closer to the point of being unsupportable by our natural resources.

This could also explain why hunter-gatherer groups and rural dwellers see less instance of homosexual behavior. Perhaps, it's proximity to too many people that "flips the switch" turning one towards homosexuality.

Sure, it'd be nice to know what makes one person hetero and another homosexual... but in the meantime, can't we all just get along?

reproduction

by john.a.wills In reply to Perhaps procreation isn't ...

If sexual inversion is a response to over-population, and beneficial to the population at large, how does it get transmitted to future generations? How does my sexual inversion cause your child's sexual inversion? Cochran does consider the possibility of indirect genetic transmission; do you reject his rejection of it?
