vista and workgroups

By mikebeck ·
I am not able to see my vista from my xp computers nor my xp computer from my vista computer. I have added my vista to the existing workgroup. When I boot in on the same computer into xp it works fine.

It worked one day and then stopped.

any ideas?

good luck on an answer

by DownRightTired In reply to vista and workgroups

I hope you get one. Been waiting for vista questions like these. Ive actually had the same problem w/ two XP machines, one min theyre here next there gone. Read a post on a problem like this w/ a xp home and xp pro machine, recommended when you go through that initial network set up wizard(in XP) at the end you know it says something about making a set up disc for the other computers in your workgroup. Well actually do this (according to the poster). Ive never actually done it, usually just run same wizard on other computer if its fresh install. Worth a try though.

For anything relating to Vista

I suggest that you visit the Vista Users Community for a possible solution here

M$ runs and monitors this site so if there is an answer it should be available here and it will save your the time & money in ringing M$ for an answer that may be Sorry that will not work.

Vista is still very much at the Beta Stage at the moment and shouldn't be used in any Mission Critical business environment as it will cost you far too much till it gets all the bugs worked out.

Found an answer that worked for me

by nhaugan In reply to vista and workgroups

I had the very same problem. I installed the Microsoft update for LLTD and enabled Network Discovery, but still could not access my networked PCs. Still looking for answers, I followed a lot of responses from many discussion groups. One of the leads pointed to a Microsoft article, "File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista." The link to the article is The one thing that I did to be able to "see" and access shared files on my network was to add TCP and UDP ports to all the PCs on my network. The procedure and list of ports to add is covered in the "Using a Third Party Firewall" section of the article. As soon as I added the ports, I had total access.
