Visually Impaired Computer Settings

By mestarspet ·
Visually Impaired: Am in need of help with changing the settings (Icon size, Background color, etc.)and any knowledge of speech/reader tools to assist clients. Clients are also financially impaired. Also how can I assist them with accessing the internet? Any help will be appreciated!!

You can set your backgrounds and such, including icon size and overall resolution there. You might want to set the display to 800x600 for a start as that alone will increase some sizes. There is also an applet for Accessibility Options there.

Google "speech recognition software free" without the quotes. To see all products, omit the word free.

To help your users stay safe on the web, look into the Zone Alarm firewall tool. There is a free version. For no cost AV solutions, take a look at AVG Free and Avast or Google "free antivirus" without the quotes.

Consider using FireFox as the default browser. That way your clients don't have to worry about security faults in Internet Explorer. Have a look on the download page at utilities called plug ins that assist visually impaired people.

That should get you started. The rest of it is more a matter of teaching some habits such as putting the icon for the browser in one place consistently. That way if it is not easy to see, it is in a predictable place.

Good luck!
