A good switch will support PoE, or power over Ethernet

by ManiacMan In reply to VoIP Switches

I've had the opportunity to work with 3rd party VoIP vendors, specifically those providing Nortel phones, and they recommended using Cisco 3750 switches, or higher end Catalyst 6500 series chassis with Gigabit Ethernet over copper blades that support PoE. PoE is nice because the IP phones simply plug into the LAN and get their power from the switch, no electrical outlets or clunky power cubes needed. Check out Cisco's website, as there is a wealth of information about switches that are purposely designed for VoIP and PoE.
