By Venkatramaiah.sudarsan ·
I want to convert .txt or .pdf files to excel(.xls) format. I do not have excel installed in my system. Is there a tool to convert .txt or .pdf files to .xls format without having installed Microsoft excel in my system.

I wish to use the converted .xls file in open office.

Easiset way to get txt into excel

by Tony Hopkinson In reply to Want to convert .txt or . ...

is to convert it to csv however that implies the txt is structured.

If the txt has no structure than you need an application to impose one. That could be txt to csv and then use the default csv import in excel.
PDF is a whole different ball game in terms of accessing the data (you need to buy tools for that) then you may need to structure it.

I may be missing something here but why don't you see what Open Office will do for you, why do you need MS propriety format in the middle?

Why don't you just import text file into Open Office Calc?

by stress junkie In reply to Want to convert .txt or . ...

If your goal is to create an Open Office dot Org spreadsheet file then there is no need to create an Excel format file. You can just import a text file into OOo Calc.

I don't know about the PDF files but you might be able to import a PDF file into OOo Writer and then save it as a Calc file or a text file. I haven't tried it but it seems like a possibility.

.txt, OK -- .pdf, I do not know

by Absolutely In reply to Want to convert .txt or . ...

I second stressjunkie's suggestion that you use for this, since you have said you don't have excel installed. The last & easiest step is to save a copy of this file in .xls format. It's as simple as "Save As". The trick is getting the .txt file into Calc.

Start by getting the files open & viewable in I'm on my business workstation right now, with Windows & Excel installed, not at home with Linux & OpenOffice, so I can't walk you through the menus. But it's likely to be very similar to Excel in that you'll select something like "Import file" from a menu, navigate to the .txt file on your hard drive somewhere, and then be affronted by a barrage of "delimited" options, where you specify for the program whether the file is delimited by commas, Tab keys, whether "" are used, etc. If you have any troubles finding the right options from the menu, a search for "import file" using the OO.o Help menu or some online forum specifically for OO.o, will get you the info you need.

For the .pdf file I really have no idea how that can be done, if at all. Best of luck,

A .pdf file is essentially a picture. If you want to import a .pdf into a .xls, the bset bet is to print out the .pdf, then scan it and convert it to a .txt using OCR software.

As others have stated, you should be able to just cau-and-paste the data from a .txt file into your Open Office application, then save it as an .xls.
