WARNING: TR site weirdness planned for Wed. June 28

Just a heads up to all the hardcore TechRepublic fanatics out there. We're going to briefly shut down our global user authentication system for maintenance on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm Pacific Time.

This shutdown may or may not affect any TR feature that requires a member to log in (posting, editing, visiting restricted forums, viewing customized feeds such as Posts From My Contacts, updating profiles, saving items, subscribing to alerts, or modifying newsletter subscriptions). It may also cause unanticipated weirdness, so expect the unexpected.

If stuff is still screwy on Thursday morning, send up a flare.

Generally speaking I have very few problems but so far today, the only consistency I am seeing is the fact that today TR is being completely inconsistent. Quite frustrating to deal with because any solution you try on one problem does not work on the next problem of a similar nature.

Do not take this as a complaint but as a comment which I hope is constructive in nature. I realize you guys are doing your best under trying circumstances and will reitterate a previous suggestion of mine. Maybe the time has come to shut down completely for 24 - 48 hours, clean everything out, reformat and reinstall everything from scratch. Of course you would only do this after you have thoroughly debugged everything.

Yes a lot of discussions will be terminated along with a lot of other stuff but it can be and will be restarted if people are sufficiently interested in a topic. In the process you can delete any function not being used adequately enough to justify retaining it and add all the enhancement you wish. No, I'm not making the suggestion you expect me to make and will only say it would be nice if you saw fit to add it, sooner rather than later.

I know my suggestion will cause screams of outrage at you but aren't you getting those now??? How much worse could it get???

It literally took about 15 minutes

for me to finally get here so I could tell you it took 15 minutes to get here.

I'm getting, "The page you've requested cannot be found" almost everywhere I go. If a page does load I usually can't go anywhere else.

I can't get into My Discussions or my Tech Q&A.

The Discussions page displays only about an inch down.

I'll be surprised if Submit My Comments works.

Other than not being able to go anywhere on-site I love all of the improvements. Keep up the good work.

We apologize for the problems

We've been working on this most of the day and believe we have narrowed it down to a networking issue.

We also have a code fix for a problem with application startup, but we don't want to try too many things at once.

For what it's worth, some of my glitches have disappeared. Print function works now, I can get into My Discussion and My Tech Q&A. Still have intermittent page not found items but it's definitely better. I'll quit buggin you and let you do your thing.

Well it is better- I can get beyond the front page. From approximately 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 when I left to train, I could not get anywhere at all.

I know that you guys are on it, just thought I would let you now what I was seeing.

You need a more creative 404 page...

"Networking"?

Unless there is a networking problem between the app server and the database, or the app server and the SAN/NAS, or are experiencing a massive, internally isolated DDoS, I think you are barking up the wrong tree here.

* Your app server is slow to transfer data, yet your ping rate is good. Therefore there are no entworking problems between your app server and the outside world.

* The app server is frequently dishing out partial pages, and sometimes not giving up anything at all. This means that either the app server is jammed up, or it is waiting for data from either a database (the DB being messed up) or some external files (the SAN/NAS).

* Since images and CSS never fails to load, we can rule out the SAN/NAS.

Therefore, the problem resides in one of the following places:

* App server mangled.
* DB server mangled.

However, the app server is giving out the "Page not found" errors just fine.

So the slowdown is either in the processing of pages themselves on the app server, the connection to the DB, or on the DB server itself.

The problem is downright intermittant. This smells like a software problem.

But we had to rule out error messages that, on the surface, indicate a network issue.

To clarify, a network issue was never suspected between the user and webservers or between appservers and SAN/NAS.
