We need a little drama around here

    by av . ·

I’m getting depressed when I look at whats become of the Water Cooler. I think this video pretty much sums up my mood when I look at this joint.

    http://now.msn.com/now/0411-henri-existential-housecat.aspx

The Water Cooler has such a rich history with many posts by one of the great founding fathers, Maxwell Edison. We had the TR Garden Club and the Catch up Cafe. We had FNM and flame wars, sometimes. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, but we always had *something*. Lets do it again.

There was a community here once in the Water Cooler and there can be again. New members are always welcome.

Post something. Anything. Your choice. Add to the discussion.

I think they mostly stay over on Newfoundland in Atlantic Canada, that doesn’t mean the odd one doesn’t blow over the Strait to Cape Breton though….we get some sealife & birds native to your area blown up here every so often during hurricanes.

can be tricky to catch, there’s so many hills & valleys that you never seem to be able to see them all change at once…it usually occurs over 3 or 4 weeks. They just re-paved the Cabot Trail a couple years ago so it’s a much more pleasant drive than it used to be.

And AV Maxwell was by no means the first to be a Big User of the Water Cooler there was GOD, Guru of Dos who dragged Maxwell in long before it was called the Water Cooler officially by the PTB @ TR. We had been calling it that for a very long time before that Moniker was officially adopted. Things like the Friday Yuk used to be very big before the community was effectively Gutted with the last site downgrade. 😉

          by maxwell edison ·

In reply to Maxwell I do remember you using the Water Cooler Moniker

I remember another “Water Cooler” in my life. It was in the back of an old Skelly gas station that I used to work at as a teenager. Later, as an adult, I used to drop by the station after the work day to visit with the guys, have some beers, and shoot the breeze. Several of us used to drop into the station at the end of the day for the same reason. BYOBeer or share what someone else brings.

That old gas station was eventually torn down and replaced with a more respectable and modern looking building.

Sometimes respectable and modern don’t make for very good water coolers.

        • #2885182

Jeez, I haven’t heard or seen the name “Skelly” in decades.

I used to hang out in gas stations in Craig, Colorado when I was a teenager. There was nothing to do in town. We had 4,000 people , 40 gas stations, and almost as many churches. We didn’t have a Skelly. Esso and Conoco and other names like that. Don’t know what happened to Skelly. I used to see them in the midwest.

My favorite gas stations, when I was a little boy, was Sinclair. They had the brontosaurus on their sign.

Water Cooler only 16 months old?

        by maxwell edison ·

In reply to “The Water Cooler has such a rich history …”

I would have a nit to pick with the assertion that the Water Cooler is only 16 months old. The “Water Cooler” is a formal name given to a place only 16 months ago, but that place has been around, in use, and referred to as such for about 10 years. TR only decided to formally use the name we had informally given this place long ago.

I’m actually of the opinion that the REAL “TR Water Cooler” was taken down, or otherwise abandoned, 16 months ago. What we see now is a mere Water Cooler Wannabe. A shell of the original. An era of cyber days gone by. And for more reasons than just the format.

In addition, I don’t recall giving any one reason for “disappearing” from the new and unimproved “TR Water Cooler”, much less narrowing it down to something like, ” he (I) hated it because he (I) thought it shoved non-tech discussions into the back room.”

I don’t recall having said that at all.

The reasons (plural, not singular) I “disappeared” (and still make very few appearances) from TR actually have less to do with the format and more to do with everything else going on, and/or what has gone on, both at TR and elsewhere. (The only reason I saw this discussion and replied is that I was alerted to it by a TR friend.)

Hope it’s going well for you in the Palmetto State!

          Misinterpretation on my part

          by charliespencer ·

In reply to Water Cooler only 16 months old?

I mistakenly assumed AV was referring to the ‘official’ Water Cooler trotted out in January 2011; not the unofficial nickname for the way we’ve interacted for years.

My memory must be going faster than I thought, but you’ll obviously remember your opinions better than I.

The state Supreme Court knocked 20% of state and local candidates off the ballot Friday because of conflicting paperwork regulations. One law says candidates must file financial disclosure statements at the same time they submit the ‘dead tree’ paperwork to file for office; a newer one says they must file those statements electronically. You only have to file the statement once in your political career, so incumbents are covered. The semi-high court says you have to file at the same time; if the party managed your filing papers and you went home to file the financial statement electronically, you’re out. Some races now have no candidates at all; some have only fringe-party candidates left. Wheeeeeeee!

TR didn’t officially call it the Water Cooler in the past, but thats what it was. We did lose a lot of people after the “upgrade”, which was pretty painful. The funny thing is, all of those long-time members still visit TR, but they don’t post in the Water Cooler. They’re just looking.

Maybe the problem is that we now have an official Water Cooler and its right out there for all to see with a recommendation that off-topic stuff goes here. Before, it was like the wild west, a place where TR Boobie Bar could exist.

Everyone clearly believes 100% in man-made climate change.

As well as understanding that belief in any kind of deity is a waste of time, energy and sanity.

Not to mention total support for unrestricted government funding of medical and dental benefits.

Did I mention global acceptance of totally banning firearms of any kind?

No more reason to debate any of this sheyit whatsoever.

We’re only days, weeks and months away from Team sports being played in the solitude of your own lounge room, thanks to Kinnect-like technology.

Scotch with two drops of water

      by purpleskys ·

In reply to We need a little drama around here

A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says,

‘I’m on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it’s today….’

The bartender says, ‘Well, since it’s your birthday, I’ll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.’

As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, ‘I would like to buy you a drink, too.’

The old woman says, ‘Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.’

      ‘Coming up,’ says the bartender

As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, ‘I would like to buy you one, too.’

The old woman says, ‘Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.’

‘Coming right up,’ the bartender says.

As he gives her the drink, he says, ‘Ma’am, I’m dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?’

The old woman replies, ‘Sonny, when you’re my age, you’ve learned how to hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.’

walked into……a bar (of all places!). Gets his beer, looks down the bar, sees a door—and what looks like a card game in the next room. He goes over to the door, looks in, and there’s a poker game—with a St. Bernard sitting in. The dog doesn’t have a lot of chips, but he’s actually playing….Guy says to the door-man, “That’s the smartest dog I’ve ever seen!!”. The door-man whispers back, “He’s not so smart; every time he gets a good hand, he wags his tail…Shhhh!”. 🙂
