Weird number on my cell phone

Locked

by itgirli ·

Due to popular request, I am moving this issue from Q&A to the discussions.

The other day I looked at my cell phone and it said I had a missed call. When I displayed the number, it showed up as “1 234 567 890”. There was no voicemail left on my phone.

Does anyone have any idea why this may have happened?

Telemarketer or bill collector!
Yep I have many of those numbers on my caller ID at home.
Well of course all from telemarketers not bill collectors in my case -)

all collectors/Helemarketers always come up as “not available” or “out of area”.

Yes, after the ex-wife moved out and stopped paying her bills, I get LOTS of collectors calling.

After my house is sold and I move, my next number will be unlisted!

No idea about your number Girli, except for I heard on the radio they can now SPOOF caller ID.

Your right JD. I read that somewhere actually. You can now buy a piece of hardware that when you use it asks you for what number you want to appear to be calling from.

So now there is telephone “spoofing”. Guess folks found a way to get around call blocker.

It isn’t that expensive either. It’s going to make me not want to answer my phone.

that it is PERFECTLY legal.

You can give harrassing calls and make it look like someone else is the one doing it.

That is the case I heard, where the calls appeared to be coming from a senators office.

I have received several of these numbers. Its gotten to the point of where I no longer say hello when I see a number I dont recognize, I scream vulgar phrases at them. Hey if they really need to speak to me then they will call back at a number I know.

Hello real quick

In reply to Reply To: Weird number on my cell phone

then hang up quick if no one answers immediately. you can avoid great majority of spallers (spam-callers?) this way.

they use predictive dialers that dial more numbers than they can answer because they know not all phoens will answer with a person or at all.

there is a delay of a few seconds between the dialer hardware recognizing that a person asnwered and the call being xferred to an operator.

as I understand according to the articles listed in here they are able to have a different phone show up in your caller ID. In other words if they were to know your bank’s name, or some other phone number to a legit business that you would recognize they could have that number show up on your caller ID. I think it would open more people to being caught in a scam.

If you were in the UK I’d say numerous reasons

by gadgetgirl ·

In reply to Weird number on my cell phone

Have you changed provider lately?

Have you changed your subscription in anyway? (i.e. added on overseas calling, bolt ons etc)

Is this your original sim card?

Does your phone actually tell you (in text, on the screen) if a caller is withholding their number from you?

Of course, it could have been a marketing call, which would be more than likely over here. I assume you can’t call that number back?

If you’re worried about it, see if you can find your equivalent of our Telephone Preference List, and add your mobile number to ensure that you don’t get marketing calls at the very least.

Had you been over here, Girli, there is a guy downstairs who would have been in a certain database and able to tell you straight away…..it’s his job!

So he died and then a few months later his wife received a phone call from his old cell phone number? Could it have been that the number was still in her phone and was accidentally dialed by her and then the person who now had that phone number tried to call it back to see who it may have been?

• #3090451

It was only two weeks later

by m_a_r_k ·

In reply to How strange.

She had the phone at her house so no one else would have been able to call from that phone. The number was still issued to him. Maybe she was messing around with his phone and accidentally called her own phone from HIS phone. I don’t recall many details. Of course, you gotta remember, she was probably still not thinking clearly since it had been only two weeks since he passed away. There HAS to be a logical explanation.

Stop unsolicited calls and texts with “Mobile Call Blocker”

by mohamed hamdouni ·

In reply to Weird number on my cell phone

If your phone is an Android, then you have FREE apps that can do the job for you
”Mobile Call Blocker” (by Avanquest Mobile Technologies) for example will allow you to block unsolicited calls AND text messages and also manage blacklist and white-list profiles (easy to switch from a profile to another)
Once the correspondent is blocked then he/she will be redirected to voice mail (or if it’s a text message it will just be deleted until you remove this number from blacklist)
Once again, that’s free and you don’t have to pay for it

you can find above app at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avanquest.callblocker
