This reads like some of the worst written dialogue from your favorite 1950’s low budget science fiction movie:

For posting a somewhat helpful, politely toned reply.

I, “evil grin mode on”, had some more devilish thoughts since I and just about everyone else posting here has certainly run into a similar type of individual, whose ego will not let them admit that they are hopelessly lost.

I would much prefer to have one tell me that they really don’t understand and ask politely to dumb it down for them, than to try and get my head around that kind of post and similar kinds of questions. I re-read it a number of times, and I still don’t quite get to the essence of what the person is asking for exactly.

I used to say when I was teaching computer courses that “There is no such thing as a stupid question”. I may have to rethink that notion.

In reply to Ok children, remember

That was my reaction to the responses to the question. It’s not that hard to recognize genuine non-native English. This is nobody’s joke. I felt that he deserved to be criticized for the errors in punctuation, spelling, and basic grammar, which are what made it so hard to read, and which could have been easily cleaned up with online resources. But making fun of someone just because they are a beginner in your own language is something only the French traditionally get away with. We anglophones are supposed to be above all that.

English is an extremely difficult language and it’s a shame that historical accident has made it the world leader. Cut folks some slack. Our grammar may be somewhat streamlined but our phonetics and our syntax are unfathomable. Just try teaching ANYBODY to pronounce “squirrel,” or explaining to them the difference between arriving somewhere “on time” and “in time.”

Civilization would advance far more quickly if we were all learning Chinese instead–and if the Chinese would make their written language as ridiculously easy to study as their spoken language. No tense, no number, no gender, no endings, no prepositions, just say what you’re thinking.

It always amuses me that the people who think everyone on the planet should be able to just sit down and learn English are the same people who dismiss Chinese as “too difficult” without knowing anything about it.

This was yet another freakin’ double post. I’m editing the original contents which can be viewed in my post above with the same title. I am getting tired of this really awful TR website. Pages take 20 seconds or longer to load, if at all. Many, many “page requested not available” errors. Is this thing built on 1980s technology? A bunch of IBM PC-ATs with 512K RAM hooked together through their RS-232 serial ports? If you ask me, it is by far the most unreliable, slowest web site on the whole Internet. Nothing even comes close because it is ALWAYS this bad. If this crap keeps up much longer, I am seriously considering abandoning this thing and never wasting any more of my precious time waiting for pages to load or resubmitting posts that didn’t get posted. I have better things to do than click my Refresh icon over and over again day after day.

I think TR is lacing the online ads with an addictive drug. Why else would I keep coming back to TR since 90% of the time when I download a web page all I see is an ad chock full of high-tech whiz-bang graphics? Some of those ads have more stuff going on than a Tom Cruise super-hero super-action super-thriller movie. I shouldn’t complain. No need to fork over $2.99 to rent an over-the-top movie when I can come to TR and watch the same amount of high-tech wizardry for the low, low price of 0 dollars and 0 cents.

We just rented “Millions” on DVD. It was a really wonderful, offbeat film and I heartily recommend it to anyone who is not too much of a curmudgeon.

But the dialect… Uncompromisingly British English. Not the slightly-homogenized-for-international-audiences upper-class speech of “Pride and Prejudice.”

In America we’re accustomed to accents being purely regional. Once you master the generic “southern” pronunciation and slang you can understand anyone from Dolly Parton to George Bush. But in England accents are an attribute of “social class.” We may understand middle class Londoners talking over dinner, but when the scenes shifts outdoors and we’re listening to construction workers, we can’t make out a single word.

Thank the goddess for DVD technology. We just clicked on the “English Subtitles” button and read the dailog!

As opposed to simply accepting or rejecting, lets be more creative.

I can’t give Neil high marks for originality, as the poem is well known, at least to those of us of a certain generation who actually read books for entertainment.

I can give Neil high marks and priase for the appropriate appropriation of classical farsical literature in a humourous setting.

But he misspelled “malarkey”

by dc guy ·

In reply to He got all miffed with me!

And you politely demonstrated that no one is perfect.

“Borogoves,” not “borogroves.”
“Foe,” not “fow.”
“Came wuffling,” not “and whiffling.”
“Frabjous,” not “frabious.”

Okay, so “fow” was surely a typo. But surely some of his were as well. He could have saved us a lot of “wading” if he’d taken a few minutes to edit his post using today’s online resources. It wouldn’t have made him look like a native speaker but it would have made it less time-consuming to read and more understandable.

Everyone should edit their own posts. If we each spent the few minutes a day that would take, we would each save far more time on all the posts we read. It’s just simple collective economics.

• #3096091

I agree with you and I do edit them here

by neilb@uk ·

In reply to But he misspelled “malarkey”

because I care about the readership. What I bestowed on our good friend Entawanabi was around fifteen seconds of Google, cut and the eventual paste of the first copy I found. Proof-read it? No, I didn’t even read it as I’ve known the poem since I was eight.

Why do it? Not at all because of his execrable Engrish(sic) as my Spanish, for example, is crap. Because, even allowing for mis-translation or even Max’s multiple serial re-translations, the content was, technically speaking, incomprehensible bollocks.

As for malark(e)y, both spellings are acceptable in any US dictionary that I’ve checked but the ‘e’ version is, I admit, more common. I haven’t found the ‘malarky’ version in the OED so I sit corrected.

But at the same time it was a church school that was charging the parents a small fortune to teach the kids and they didn’t have one computer in the place just obsolete books.

Of course not having any electricity might have been a hindering factor but those kids would never know anything about using computers let alone how to use or program one most wouldn’t be able to turn one on as that wasn’t in the books.

I would guess that English is not his first language, and he’s using a combination of some words he does know (or thinks he knows) and some sort of translation program, both for reading the message and to post his reply.

My message converted to French:

Je devinerais cet anglais n’est pas le sien la premi?re langue, et il utilise une combinaison de quelques mots qu’il sait (ou pense qu’il sait) et une esp?ce du programme de traduction, les deux pour lire le message et poster sa r?ponse.

And back to English:

I would guess this English is not his the first language, and it uses a combination of some words that it knows (or thinks that it knows) and a type of the translation program, the two to read the message and post his response.

Converted to Portuguese:

Adivinharia este ingl?s n?o ? seua a primeira linguagem, e usa uma combina??o de algumas palavras que sabe (nem pensa que sabe) e um tipo do programa de tradu??o, os dois ler a mensagem e coloca seua resposta.

And back to English:

It would guess this English is not his to first language, and uses a combination of some words that knows (neither thinks that knows) and a kind of the program of translation, the two read the message and puts its answer.

Imagine translating a longer, more complicated technical message.

Personally, I’d give the guy a break and assume that things are simply getting lost in the translation.

Its not the question I object to, its the manner in which it was framed. And perhaps translation isn’t helping the case.

But to me, a precise of what I read was: I am a smart computer guy and this is my theory, do you agree? Thats the tone that came across, intended or not.

Let me take a non IT example. Many people think glass flows, as in over time glass gets thicker at the end closest to gravity – as evidenced by the fact that some medieval church windows have thicker bottoms than tops. Physics on the other hand says it isn’t so and that glass installers of the middle ages put the thickest parts of their glass sheets at the bottom as a practise.

If you come into alt.folklore.urban and ask, “Does Glass really flow? Someone told me it does”, most of the time you well get a polite well researched answer.

If, on the other hand, you post a question that isn’t a question but a theory; “I know its true because I read it in a book on medieval churches, and I believe it.”, you will get the full wrath of a bunch of people who can recite chapter and verse.

As of last nights news its now official Global Warming is Happening AU has just had the hottest year in recorded history and for the last 2 decades the temp has been steadily increasing. :p

They are saying that 2006 is going to be a stinker and since I have the AC on in my Lab from 6.30 AM till well after midnight I tend to agree its getting quite warm. Now I’m not saying that the Ice Caps are going to melt and flood the place out for the next few centuries but it has been BLOODY hot recently and even at night the temp hasn’t been dropping a lot either. 🙂

As for my polluted sewerage pit becoming unbearable well I try to avoid Tasmania but even there the new pollution laws are allowing the ravages of industry to be turned back and there is now a massive out cry that grass and shrubs are now growing on the denuded hills that have been laid waste because of the heavy polluters so that piece of Tourist Industry is dieing and all that will remain are postcards of the area before the stuff grows back. But to be fair they are trying hard to keep the place looking like it did at the height of the pollution they are going around pulling out the shrubs and fertilizing with Roundup anything that is attempting to grow there but they are slowly loosing the battle. 🙂

But when it comes to raciest jokes the very best ones are told to me by those who are belittled by them and what’s worse is that I can’t repeat them without seeming like a raciest. Oh the inhumanity of life. 🙁

Col ]:)

PS It’s very hard to keep a straight face when one of the downtrodden tells you a very funny self degrading joke in a major shopping center without looking like an absolute fool which is the desired result when they tell the jokes. 🙁

What can I say The Devil Made Me Do It! 🙂

By the way currently I’m running a Data Recovery program in an attempt to pick up all the data that’s been thrown off my backup drive as the original person who is being talked about has claimed in another of his posts. With a bit of Luck I will not have to take the drive into a Class 1 Clean Room to get all that messy data out of the drive. 😀

But seriously do you understand the question that was posted above? To me it is more of a statement rather than a question where either agreement or informed disagreement is asked for rather than solving a problem in the T Q & A section of TR.

In reply to Weird Technical Question

Maxwell, please save your comments for someone who deserves them more than BFilmFan and those others of us who have contributed to the feeding frenzy over entawanabi’s posts. The man – entawanabi – is a complete idiot.

I agree with you that if someone asks a question, however stupid or however bad the spelling or grammar, we don’t really have the right to stick it to the questioner without better reasons. Entawanabi, however, sets himself up for anything we care to dish out because of his responses to questions and articles. I include for your perusal the top four from his list of posts. I haven’t read the rest – yet.

A response to a TR article on a delayed MS patch:

Of course we all know in perfect world of programming there were no mistakes made (and if there were they were caught before they left the floor_Let’s assume this is so for this argument: Nowwe then look at “US” who are of course less perfect, “IT WEREN”T US”; so who did do it? The premise I pose and find in my field of expertise; Boy, do I want to snicker at me when I see what ya’ll can do; Is your system founded?; How many decades ago was that?; Just where is it operating and from what basis – I’m seeing some stuff that is not cool -?; Boot, Boot, Boot, and REBOOT, INSTALL, RE-INSTALL, Whoops! What happenned to the boot disc HOW OLD IS IT?

Maam, if you or someone is haveing trouble with there mouse reread in the Mouse program instead of replaceing the complete set-up, usually this is sufficient. It also highlights that occasionally that these things FADE, I think is the correct term, with use.

————–

In this post, he answers a perfectly reasonable question about wireless security with complete tosh:

The first part is to design your, or consider the structure of your user name and password Operation, that will provide most of your problems solutions, the second part is provided with a registerred ‘IP’, an Identification Protocol. I’m not sure where to get one but that is\was the common practise.24

————–

Another response to a question on network access problems – in full!

It is one of the rudimentary things: for a lot of reasons ‘THEY’ could no longer be networked together correctly. It is a place to start.

————–

A response to a user with Access Denied problems on his home LAN:

IP(Identification protocall) they have to be known to both machines, this normally is not the problem but bringing it up addressing it, it is out of the way. Next, this can be problematic of elderly machines and rarely elderly wiringnext is the operations scaled to the machine(s)- I’ve no way of doing much with this subject and maybe someone else will be able to remember the vocabulary requiring a minimum amount of mega-bytes for something to work at all, IS THERE A WAY TO TELL HOW MANY RESIDENT OPERATIONS AND FUNCTIONS ARE HOLDING HOSTAGE ‘megs”, Ikow I’m the only one that messes up that darn CAP LOCK button! Finally IF this is ‘a’ used set or one is used is it possible that the security operations are finnally catching up?

————–

There is more and it does make for fun reading.

These are responses to questions. I rest my case.

Neil

p.s. Sorry, I just had to add this answer re: a lost partition

Your ‘drive`spins at a certain rate, out near the edge the gravities are high, the bucket weighs three pounds but when you swing it in a circle ay arms length it weighs much more, after a few years the medium spins off; agood example of extreme medium loss is a very small feild on your screen that is not expandable and you never seem to be able to save anything well, also you can toss your antenna as wellas its coating; so then do you have any storage medium left that is coherent? And how much. As far as recovery is concerned: in DOS 2.2 is Drive.RECif your drive is properly set-up and founded this will recoer what is possible including from fibers that used to hold the storage medium.

Sport of the Day – Do I misunderstand the rules?

by maxwell edison ·

In reply to Maxwell, don’t be so hard on us all

.
It seems that targeting a specific PERSON for public humiliation and ridicule, because a message that person posted doesn’t sit well with the reader, is indeed the sport of the day.

What are the rules?

Which messages qualify for such a verbal flogging?

Which people qualify for such verbal floggings?

Who gets to decide which messages and which people qualify for such verbal floggings?

Please post the rules for this game so I can play it properly.

Edited Part:

And what about the sense of fair-play?

Would you put your biggest, best, and strongest boxer in the ring against a scrawny and weak child? Of course not. That’s not fair. I’m all in favor of engaging in a verbal bout; and I’ll spar with the best of them. But for Pete’s sake, ganging up on a person in such a way violates the very essence of fair-play.

In reply to Sport of the Day – Do I misunderstand the rules?

And your response?

It goes back a while now and involved Iraq and Rouge Nations I just asked quite honestly who got to decide who was a “Rouge Nation” the burns from all the flaming still haven’t healed properly yet but the good news is that the skin grafts now appear to be taking at last. 😀

The pressure bandages are really becoming a absolute pain to deal with and it’s very hard to have a shower with them on. 🙁

At the time I wasn’t trying to be funny but asking an honest question as it can be argued that those Nations willing to accept the First Strike option could be considered as Rouge Nations by the International Community and I just didn’t want to see all those involved in the COW being called ‘Rouge Nations” in a couple of years time by others.

But after that rocky start we’ve had some fun haven’t we?

By your reaction Max.

You’ve never been shy about attacking others, and at times your sense of decorum has been lost, though I sense you do try to be good.

What provoked me, and I suspect Neil and others is more than just the one post. In some of the other posts by this person I read a great amount of hubris and not a little condescention. Some of this posters answers in the tech Q&A have been just plain wrong and ill advised.

I grant that English may not be this person’s first language, and that fact may be contributing to some level of communications challenge. But this poster is consistent.

Are you honestly telling me you haven’t verbally flogged anyone here?

It’s the who, the when, the why, and the how that I’m in disagreement with. I won’t blind-side an innocent bystander, and I don’t go looking for one to target. And usually, it’s only well into the course of a “discussion”.

I’m kinda’ like the Tina Turner version of “Proud Mary”, if you know what I mean. And if my opponent doesn’t want to participate, I don’t try to beat him senseless into submission.

The rules?

by neilb@uk ·

In reply to Sport of the Day – Do I misunderstand the rules?

I can only speak for myself and I think that I outlined my position earlier but I’ll recap. The rules, to me, are simple.

If a poster is asking a question then we must accept until proven otherwise that the poster is sincere and that no amount of stupidity in that post qualifies for any degree of public flaming. If the best we can do is not answer then that’s what we should do. (We must get an Angel emoticon!

If a poster makes a statement, especially as an answer to another user’s question, then different criteria apply.

In this case, before I posted ‘The Jabberwocky’ as a response to entawanabi’s original ‘question’ as flagged up by BFilmFan (more of a statement, really), I checked up to see what other activity he’d been involved with as I recognised both style and name.

So,

1) “Who gets to decide” – seems to be a sort of “by public acclaim”. If we didn’t agree with bFilmFan then we would have posted differently or not at all.

2) “Which people qualify” – people who satisfy rule 1.

3) “Which messages qualify” – again. Seems like rule 1 applies.

Fair-play? I have the sense not to head-butt with you concerning, say, the US Constitution as I’d expect a pretty direct kicking and that would be fair. Much more to the point, I also have the sense not to persistently post absolute technical tosh on a technical forum as I’d expect what I’d get. Again, it would probably be fair.

Peers come, peers go and I know, for a fact, that some have been driven off and not by me.

But if you insist I can arrange to have them donated to my favorite charity. :p

The one that helps old IT workers back into real life and how to deal with the day to day problems and act like they are not Life & Death decisions. 🙂

And he was extrapolating from HHGTTG and instead of just using Earth to find out what the Ultimate Question is he was expounding that the entire Solar System was the computer that was programed to find the question to which the answer is 42. 😀

Now maybe I’m missing something here but by the provided description you have a 1 gallon Microwave seal able container with a partial Faraday Cage in it with two bare wires coming out of it and a gelatinous mess poured into it and somehow you are supposed to be able to interface this with a computer.

And this is this persons description of them self.

Computer Operator, Current Professional application Installation & Set-ups of computers and computer systems; Hardware Core Structures, Core Structure Set-ups and Foundings. Tremendously large, Dumb education at American Speaking Universities and Colleges, not English speaking, a lessor language.

This goes beyond Weird Technical Questions to something far worse requiring large amounts of drugs applied by Medical Professionals. 🙂
