What do Google / Yahoo gain from adding toolbars?

By shiny_topadm ·
A "pet peeve" when not having to actually fix things:
vendors who "provide" the installation of a new toolbar with the updates that you actually want!

First point: I can add my own options to my system if I feel that I need them. I want to see the largest screen possible, I only show the browser options and tools that I use.

I got a notification that Sun had an update for Java (which I use), so I allowed the update to be downloaded, and told the system to install it. The first screen is about the Google toolbar. I assume that google paid for that placement, but isn't it annoying to have to click on something to not install it and get to my actual request. I don't really see what google gets out of this except make people annoyed with them.

How many of you have seen other people's system with several lines of toolbars cluttering up the screen? Do the "providers" really need to push their tools this way?

Thanks for your time!
