What is with the notify crap?

By ITgirli ·
Anytime I go to post, at the end I get the little notification box. Is there a way to set the default to the unchecked position? As fast as people post here, I don't want a billion emails bogging down my email account for junk mail. If I want notification, wouldn't one reason that I could just pop back over and look for it? Are we really that lazy of a people? (Apparently since I don't want to take the extra trouble to uncheck a box everytime I post) But sometimes I don't scroll to the bottom to even notice the box and then ....oops, crap in my email account. And when did this box rear it's ugly little head anyhow? I would swear that I don't remember it being there a week ago. I just scrolled down and AH! there it is again. NO. NO. NO. Could one of you guys help me eradicate the monster?

Hi sMoRtY71

by maxwell edison In reply to It's a single e-mail

Since I use a Yahoo mail box for my TR emails, it's not that big a deal. But one email every 4 hours could be 6 emails per day on a hot topic. (Or would it be 6 emails per day per discussion?)

And I don't know if it's intended or an oversight, but I'm not "subscribed" to some of the discussions that I get the notification for.

I tend to use the My Discussions link to glance at my discussions for updated postings, so if there was a setting for me to turn it on or off, I'd turn it off. However, I don't really care if you keep that new feature or not, but I'll probably uncheck it if I remember to.

I can see right away that that type of email may pose a problem. If it was purely technical discussions, it might be OK. However, we sometimes get out of control in the Miscellaneous discussions, as you probably know. Messages are sometimes titled with less than professional wording, with profane language. If I get too many emails with too many words like that embedded within, somebody in our network security office is likely to notice eventually.

If I do forget to uncheck the box (and I guarantee I WILL occasionally forget), and I do start receiving these 4-hour notifications for a particulary heated discussion, is there any way in the world I can disable them other than to immediately change my registered email address, and to keep it set to my personal email until the heated discussion abates? Thanks for hearing my concerns.

A couple of unsub options

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Hmmm

First of all, we're probably going to make the subscription box unchecked.

But until then, we are doing a couple of things:
1. If you reply to the same thread, unchecking the box will unsubscribe you from the emails (of course, if you post again, you will need to uncheck the box).
2. You can go to the My Discussions page and click the "remove" link next to the thread you want to unsub from. Here is the URL to that page:

We are also working on a fix to the My Discussions page that will show every discussion you're subscribed to. For some reason, that list is incomplete right now.

3. Links to My Discussions addded to email alerts
We are adding the My Discussions link to all of the alert mails so you can jump right to the page and unsub from one or more threads.

We never thought this feature would cause so many issues. Thanks for being patient as we work through it.

I didn't mean to start an issue (despite what many think). Thanks for letting me gripe about it.

Thanks for letting us know

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Thanks from me, too

I guess we should probably go back to running stuff by you all in advance.

This was one that we figured would be no big deal (mainly because we wanted to have the feature since we follow lots and lots of threads).

Looks for some fixes/refinements early next week.

And for those of you that get the e-mails over the weekend, let us know what you think about the frequency of them.

Kill the feature - save our jobs

by angry_white_male In reply to A couple of unsub options

Last thing I need is for my boss to monitor my e-mail, click on a link to a thread where I wrote something that would get me in trouble and thanks to TechRepublic, I'm out of a job.

Kill the feature - NOW. There are enough people out there getting fired for talking about work in their blogs and whatnot.

Thanks, but please uncheck by default...

If I want to monitor a discussion, I'll check the box.
