What is with the notify crap?

By ITgirli ·
Anytime I go to post, at the end I get the little notification box. Is there a way to set the default to the unchecked position? As fast as people post here, I don't want a billion emails bogging down my email account for junk mail. If I want notification, wouldn't one reason that I could just pop back over and look for it? Are we really that lazy of a people? (Apparently since I don't want to take the extra trouble to uncheck a box everytime I post) But sometimes I don't scroll to the bottom to even notice the box and then ....oops, crap in my email account. And when did this box rear it's ugly little head anyhow? I would swear that I don't remember it being there a week ago. I just scrolled down and AH! there it is again. NO. NO. NO. Could one of you guys help me eradicate the monster?

If I may suggest...

I think that we all have our "default" preferences for this feature. Would it be possible for you to add the default value for the checkbox to our user profiles?

The users that I program for can never agree on how they want certain things to work for which I end up giving them a user profile to manage things for themselves. In a specific application for example, I had email notifications going out to users whenever there were any changes to any employee's status. Some users wanted an email for each employee and others wanted a list of employees in a single email. I created a user profile configuration that allowed each end-user to select which type of email they received.

I know this might be a pain but if I can manage my default notification preference, it truly becomes My TechRepublic, right?!?!?!

okay, so it won't kill us, but....

Is there still a way that we could set it up to default unchecked in our profile? If you post a lot, it gets a bit tedious unchecking and forgetting and going back to uncheck. I like the idea, but not the default setting.

i've never seen the little monster here.
but then i don't subscribe to a discussion. :)

on one site they default to an ebot on, with every post in a discussion, or forum.
me, being the obnoxious s.o.b. i am, blacklisted that email address so thier policy is generating tons of bounced ebot messages.

if a topic is interesting enoiugh that I want to follow it, i can do so without subscribing to it. :)

i'm just trying to figure out where these html formatted advertising emails from cnet techrepublic ( cnet email addy, tr subject line ) are coming from..html is spam.

should i mark the cnet addy as a spam source?

ok, it sounds like TR is already taking measures with this little box. But I just wanted to add my opinion that I don't like it checked either. Having a profile setting to choose the default is definitely a good idea. Thankfully I noticed it today when I posted. I use a non-corporate email, but I'm already inundated with technical spam. Plus I like to check posts on my own time. I don't have time to open a bunch of emails.

Subscribe feature already exists -- leave it be

by jardinier In reply to What is with the notify c ...

PLEASE can't we just have the "subscribe" feature which is listed under each post?

This has always provided me with regular notification of activity on discussions to which I CHOOSE to subscribe WITHOUT bombarding me with nuisance emails.

What is the point of doubling up (and in a very annoying way) on a feature that already works fine?

We're working on it

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Subscribe feature already ...

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, we're going to make some adjustments to the feature early next week. We didn't expect this to be a big deal.

BTW, if you're already getting the notifications, how are we bombarding you with nusiance emails?

Regardless, look for adjustments early next week.

nuisance emails?

by jardinier In reply to Subscribe feature already ...

Nuisance emails are the ones I get if I don't un-tick the box when I make a post.

Kill the feature - save our jobs

Last thing I need is for my boss to monitor my e-mail, click on a link to a thread where I wrote something that would get me in trouble and thanks to TechRepublic, I'm out of a job.

Kill the feature - NOW. There are enough people out there getting fired for talking about work in their blogs and whatnot.
