So where I work we use what we call the Cocktail when we reinstall an operating system, or just when we build a system, and we are trying to make it the best group of software we can get, I will list all of the things we use and why we use them, and if you have anything you think we should change or if there is something out there that you don’t think I don’t know about PLEASE post!! (all software in our cocktail is FREEWARE)

1. Mozilla Firefox – Internet Browsing
2. Adobe Reader/Player – Self Explanatory
3. OpenOffice – Free MS Word
4. VLC Media Player – the codec/good player
5. AVG – Anti Virus
6. ADAWARE – Anti Adaware
7. Spybot – Anti Spyware
8. Malwarebytes – antimalware/scan and remove viruses

Once again if you know of any other good things, please post!!

I always add
CDBurner XP – http://cdburnerxp.se/
Don’t let the name fool you. It works very well on 2000 / XP / Vista and 7

7-Zip – http://www.7-zip.org/
Great light-weight compression tool. Also handy for extracting ISO images

Primo PDF – http://www.primopdf.com/index.aspx
PDF creator.

With Adobe you’ve got between 60MB and 95MB for the footprint.

Foxit (including both the Reader and the Editor) gives a footprint of LESS than 5MB.

In reply to i’m fond of

ah yes, we use ccleaner for clean up after repair, but we don’t leave it on the machine, and is superantispyware better than spybot?

• #2816096

not necessarily better

by purpleskys ·

In reply to Thanks

as opposed to different…most of those programs will scan for different things…spybot looks for bots, keyloggers, etc where superantispyware looks for other forms of spyware…and I keep ccleaner, use it to clear my history and temp files once a week instead of having to do it manually (I’m lazy 😉 )

• #2816090

Different?

by john_4 ·

In reply to not necessarily better

So do SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot search for the same thing?

• #2816083

after doing a bit of research

by purpleskys ·

In reply to Different?

popular consensous is that superantispyware is the better product…i did a google search http://www.google.com/search?q=superantispyware+vs+spybot&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 i personally will be keeping spybot because i like it, but i like superantispyware too…so…personal preference i suppose

Not to be a stick in the mud but I don’t believe that AVG and MalwareBytes are not free for commercial/corporate use. They are only free for home use.

AVG not free

In reply to Whats a good Cocktail?

Just like to point out that AVG is not free for the usage you describe…

Spybot no longer is either.

In reply to AVG not free

AVG 9.0 is free…we offer it on our website, and it works just fine, and becuase im lazy and don’t want to post to the other things, so is adaware and spybot, and the free versions work just fine

In reply to AVG is free

If they are used in a non-commercial or non-educational setting, then yes it is free for use.

If you are putting the programs on commercial or educational systems, than you are in violation of the licensing agreement.

Edited to add; From the AVG site;

END USER SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT
1. Definitions.
a. Authorized Purposesmeans (i) personal, noncommercial purposes in the case of Software known as AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and AVG LinkScanner, and (ii) your personal purposes or the internal business purposes of you and your Affiliates in the case of other Software.

I agree with you. and we don’t put them on any company computers, but we do put them on home computers so technically it is for non commercial, and we don’t charge for the programs so 🙂 loopholes i guess, lol

• #2816069

Unfamiliar

by charvell ·

In reply to Used it…

Unfortunately i haven’t used cdburnerxp so I can’t compare them directly.

In my experience, IMGBurner is a simple program, so if cdburnerxp has a lot of features, it might be a better option.

I don’t do media burning (such as making audio CDs or video DVDs) at work where we us it, I really only need to write files to CDs or burn ISO images to CDs so I can use them (usually when I’ve had to download install files from EOpen and they supply an ISO instead of an EXE).

What are acromyns ??… Or do you mean –

by older mycroft ·

In reply to Acromyns

Acronyms? 😉

In any event you’re still wrong – an acronym is an abbreviation that forms into a word like:

RAF ~ Royal Air Force (pronounced RAFF)

or

LASER ~ Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

or

SCUBA ~ Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus

Regrettably ‘J&B’ or ‘JW’ do not form words so do not qualify as acronyms, or even acromyns (whatever they are).

My favourite tipple, as most of the peers here are aware of is the gloriously peaty flavoured LAPHROAIG with no ice, just a splash of water. 🙂
