Where are the jobs for Americans?

I've been reading for months in all of the trade journals that Microsoft is discontinuing Windows NT server support at the end of 2004. Many companies are planning on moving to Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003. Why don't we see companies hiring people to do the work?

I don't see that. Perhaps nearer 20:1. I did a straw poll of a dozen or so company directors I associate with and the ratio in the 13 who offered information was actually around 5:1!

In my company, the ratio between lowest paid employee and the Managing Director and owner of the company is about 2:1. Some of the large public companies and corporations have executives on six figure salaries, but not that many. Figures provided by the Confederation of British Industry and the Institute of Directors give average ratios of between 8:1 and 14:1. Yes, there may be one or two companies where the ratio IS 80:1 but these (fortunately) are VERY few and far between!

Legal minimum wage is another issue. It was introduced here in the UK not so long ago and has made a slight difference to the poorest paid workers, but not much.

The 'National Average' wage in the UK is around ?17,000, or about $25,000. If you considered a sample of just ten people, that could mean ten people getting 17k each or nine people on 12k and one on 80k....the average is the same.

One politician, and I forget who, once stated that in 'five years time everyone in the country would be earning 'above average wages' because of increasing prosperity nationally and globally. Sorry, but for anybody to be earning 'above average', SOMEBODY has to be earning 'below average'!!

What's wrong here?
You aren't being unique, everyone else does the above steps. Apparently you have ideas that could benefit a company, have you phoned one and told them your ideas and how you will benefit them?

Atta boy, sit by the phone, it'll ring one day. Probably by someone looking to sell YOU something.

What I see OVER AND OVER AGAIN here, are people expecting the most common channels and a few pieces of paper (that everyone else has too)to help them find work. NOT.

It doesn't work.

Find a company, phone the OWNER or PRESIDENT only, if you can't get past the gatekeeper, take a sales course. YOu will get the owener and/or president. Explain what you do and how you will benefit the company, now go see hm/her with your proposal and sell your ability and convince the boss that the company NEEDS your services.

I've never seen someone who was unsuccessful using hard attack techniques. Your President and your people are always ready to bear arms and take the offensive at any chance. Why does everyone hae such passive job hunting skills?

However it fails to address the issue of openings versus applicants. An easy demonstration of this aspect of the problem occured in California where 130+ took the direct approach to try and land 1 opening. The direct approach failed in 99.5% of the attempts. Maybe that isn't fair. Only 4 or 5 really pushed the direct approach, so the failure rate probably can't be considered above 75-80%

Now had there been a chance for say 100 California governors (a flock of politicians, a gaggle of guvs?)...

I had that figure from an article in the BBC. Apparently there is a move to cap the ratio at 20:1.

The 2:1 rates would suggest the small sole proprieter company rather than large corporation.

US minimum wage is $5.15 per hour, plus OT at not less than 1.5 rate ($7.73) for hours worked above 40 in a 7 day period for non-exempt jobs. Most IT positions are classifed as exempt. As an annual pay (40 hours, 2 weeks) the minimum wage is $10,712 per year gross. Employer cost is higher since they pay 6.2% social security and 1.45% Medicaid tax on each employee's wages.

The worst extreme is ONE case of 80:1.....that wasn't an average! The average is actually nearer to the figures I quoted!

Don't listen to the MS Hype

We are not planning on migrating to Server 2003 - and will be doing internal support. Once again MS is blowing the Hype to get people into training classes - spending their money... and you will end up with an empty bag... Smoke and Mirrors...

We are even looking at Linux - or back to Novell 6.5 before we would consider moving on to Server 2003.

Interesting - isn't it ...

The company I work for - (around 200 servers) is currently running WK2 server software. MS has been telling us about ending support in 2004 ... and attempting to get us to upgrade to 2003 - plus spend hundreds of thousands on training for our server folks.

We are investigating - not moving off the current platform and designing plans to move to Linux servers... Bye Bye Microsoft server..

An upgrade of a server

is less than a day's work. That does not a position make. If a company has lots of servers, then they probably have staff in house to upgrade and maintain the environment.

No net gain of jobs.....

What is needed to create jobs is an expansion of technology that is too big for in-house staff to handle. I'm waiting for the recovery to gain momentum and have capital expenditures pick up. If John Chambers of Cisco is correct, the switch and router market will pick up two months after the rest of the economy does.

That's where the new jobs happen, when HARDware is obsoleted....
