Where would you like to live?

Locked

by neilb@uk ·

leaving aside the fact that we’d never prise most of you Yanks out of your native home – with the exception of jck who wants to live in Andrea Corr’s knickers – where would you like to live?

I found my ideal place down on the Somerset levels, Curry Mallet, just a mile from Beercrocombe.

The fact that it’s deep cider country doesn’t give me too much of a problem.

Usually when you think you are being funny you cut and paste to at least 10 different posts. So disappointing, what’s wrong with you? No tasteless grade 9 jokes for us to goan at and click past?

Or is this an indication of your own lack of humour compared to the stuff you cut and paste that you actually think is funnier?

I mean seriously, I can take a ‘good’ slam when it is ‘good’, in fact I like to see such humour thrown at me, its refreshing and I love to be burned by quick retorts and wit.

But that’s just elementary shcool ‘I know you are but what am I” BS.

Next time ask someone funny to help you out, that’s just sad.

Oddball spelling in what way?

Is it the fact that I add a U to words because I am both English and live in Canada?

You should be able to get your head around that one or is Canadian spelling new to you this week?

Typos? I missed the letter R in one word, did it make it a bit difficult for you to comprehend?

And judging from dozens of past Friday Yuks, you are the one who simply cuts and pastes and endless line of pathetic, tasteless jokes, probably how you knew I was talking about you.

Cut and paste; sure but, you had to read each and every one; didn’t you?

by sleepin’dawg ·

In reply to Now if only we could figure out who you were replying to.

You must have; otherwise how else would you have known they were cut and paste and/or tasteless and pathetic??? I believe that sort of comes under the heading of being hoist on one’s own petard, although I doubt you’re capable of grasping the reference without Googling it.

Well I can see you are still quite anal retentive but it appears you need a change to your medication. Ativan isn’t cutting it for you anymore; you probably need a switch to Prozac. However, that might interfere with the Cialis or Viagra that you use to offset your other obvious shortcomings. How else to explain a so obviously demented phsyce, except as compensation for physical limitations or personality disorders on a scale requiring professional treatment. Are you still doing weird things to small animals and are they letting you out without your keeper yet??? Is that why you had to leave Port Hardy in such a rush??? I guess it was before they could catch on to you.

And judging from dozens of past Friday Yuks, you are the one who simply cuts and pastes and endless line of pathetic, tasteless jokes

I believe you wished to say an endless…

Just a tiny sample of what I was referring to. I can call up lots more if you want me to; some in which you have even acknowledged your typos and spelling errors.

Hmmmmm??? Once again, it looks like you’ve gone and tripped over your own dick; doesn’t it??

BTW, thats not the only error in your little tirade. English??? Yours is barely intelligble and certainly far from intelligent. It might be nice if you learned how to use it while expressing and demonstrating the astonishing quantity of BS you manage to generate considering you’re hampered by the minuscule amount of intellect you seem to possess.

It seems you have absolutely nothing better to do except to wait for my posts so as to make some sort of childish comment. Well here you go; blow your mind then. Most of us have learned to ignore most of your more egregious utterings, although you do occasionally make some sense on the occasional topic.

Hmmm? Come to think of it; MAYBE that’s how you’ve become such an expert on cut and paste. That’s it!!! That’s the answer!!! I see it all now. When Oz posts without any spelling errors and/or typos and uses proper sentence structure, then it’s because he is cut and pasting. How else to explain it???

Dawg ]:)

You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried

In reply to Now if only we could figure out who you were replying to.

Well you probably could but that goes without saying I think.

as for reading each one, don’t flatter yourself. When reading through the Friday Yuk in PRINT mode, it always seems that as soon as I read a really stupid, old, tasteless and disrespectful joke, you name is attached to it. That’s when you know you’ve read too far, the next 20 will be more of the same, time to find a new topic. You have some delusion that you are being smart or funny and as a result you post crap that is offensive to some readers or painfully acceptable to others (as they know Dawg is always that way).

You have no class and no tact.

Your ‘style’ is that of a drunk pervert, looming around Victoria Secret.

You’re not funny so you have to cut and paste jokes, you feel that contributing one tasteless joke is not enough, so you cut and paste everything offensive you can find so as to make sure you offend everyone equally.

Face it, you are just an old, spastic, loser looking to hang with younger people to make yourself feel somewhat useful or relevant in life.

There’s no hope for you and nothing you can do to change it. You’ve probably always been a loser, an outcast, loner that nobody can stomach, other than to be polite to you for some odd reason they never understand.

As for your other nonsense, get bent. I’m not wasting time with your lies and insanity AGAIN. You don’t know what you are saying half the time anyway, when you do its a pure lie or something someone else has already said which you feel makes you seem unique, hip, trendy and cool.

Sorry but you just come across like a bitter old fart that couldn’t get laid if his life depended on it.

One minute you are saying I need Viagra for my shortcomings, the next you are saying I tripped on my dick, make up your mind, or is it whatever suits your ever changing and inconsistent focus?

Perhaps a little Alzheimer’s kicking in, or maybe a lot.

I really have nothing more to say to you, you were born to be a classless bottom feeder and fool nobody.

F*ck off loser, get a real life instead of trying to simply discount everyone else’s.

Loser.

Like I care what you think??? Look in some phsycology text books under obsessive compulsive disorders and you’ll find pictures of yourself as the classic example.
Check a dictionary under loser; again you’ll find another picture of yourself.

What are you proclaiming yourself to be an expert on today or this week??? It might give us a slant on where you’re going to jump to next. As it is, nobody takes you very seriously, and tends to write you off as nothing but a know-it-all blowhard.

Anyway, not to worry. Starting Monday, I’ll be out of here for the next several weeks.

BTW you should take note of this very carefully. I only responded to your attack on me; I didn’t start this little flame session that you seem so intent on conducting. Your conduct just confirms my diagnosis of OCD as several others have so infomed me. Now back to ignoring you once again.

BTW you don’t need Viagra to be able to trip over your own dick. Just being the useless, slack, pri*k that you so obviously are, is all that’s required.

In reply to Now if only we could figure out who you were replying to.

the old cripple has gone down that road before. When called to task he lied incessantly for nearly two weeks, never showed his pathetic little head (as he said he would) and was proven beyond any doubt to have lied repeatedly throughout his wasteful bullsh1t. He was caught out being a liar so many times that he eventually had to laugh at himself and accept that he was full of sh1t.

That’s why I don’t take him seriously, as if anyone actually does.

When asked to put his money where his mouth is, he just snivels and whines and never comes through as he promises.

He’s liar, a coward and a pathetic loser, not worth my or anyone’s time.

An example of his lies (or senility) was illustrated in his last post.

I had said to another peer: “Some people
Only have grey matter in order to stop the wind whistling between their ears. Kind of a stopper more than a brain though.”

Sleeping Dick jumped right in with: “Explaining yourself, perhaps???”

nobody had spoke to him about him or was sharing discussion with him, he just jumped right in with his little flame, thinking he was being clever.

Now in his last post he says: “BTW you should take note of this very carefully. I only responded to your attack on me; I didn’t start this little flame session that you seem so intent on conducting. Your conduct just confirms my diagnosis of OCD as several others have so infomed me. Now back to ignoring you once again”

Yeah, a liar as well as a senile old loser.

A variety of terrain

Give me a place with decent sized mountains, plains, rivers and forests nearby and a city that has many of the amenities of a major metropolitan area and very few of the problems.

Oh, and it should NOT be in an area that gets hurricanes, typhoons or tornadoes. (Earthquakes I can handle…)

Odd, I can cope with hurricanes but not earthquakes.

by charliespencer ·

In reply to A variety of terrain

With modern weather forecasting, you can see a hurricane coming for days; there almost no excuse for a physically capable thinking being to get caught unprepared for one. Earthquakes are still pretty unpredictable.

• #2770729

Earthquakes vs hurricanes

by geek3001 ·

In reply to Odd, I can cope with hurricanes but not earthquakes.

I went through a number of earthquakes when the family lived in Southern California. Unless you happen to be at the epicenter, or in one of those places where the shaking is amplified by soil conditions, it isn’t too bad. The further you are away from the epicenter, the less you feel the quake, usually. You can always prepare for most problems and you don’t usually have to evacuate the area after a quake.

One of my problems with hurricanes is frequency. While earthquakes affect large areas, you are rarely close to the epicenter of a big one. A century or more can go by before you’re at ‘ground zero’.

Another is the amount of water involved with a hurricane. I’d be worried about the family’s library being ruined by wind borne rain or flooding.

Then there is the ‘sunbelt’ factor. I don’t like the warm temperatures people seek in the sunbelt.

We normally try to go up to Gatlinburg every Sept and Cades Cove is one of the places we always go to – they have some breath taking views, waterfalls, hiking trails (you do have to hike to the waterfalls) – it’s just a real peaceful place to go and relax.

If you go, to get to Cades Cove you’d start at the vistors center in Townsend, TN (they have some great free maps you can pick up for your trip up) – Timing it for either early morning or a couple hours from dusk, stands a better chance of seeing deer, bears, etc…

End of Sept, early Oct is a wonderful time to go as well as the leaves are starting to chasnge, though in Mid-Sept when I normally go is when the Butterflies are in their mating season, so you see thousands of these everywhere – all over the roads, in the sky, etc… So don’t forget the camera 😀

When I was in PEI I did drive by a hotel that was used in exteriors for the Avonlea miniseries(follow on to Anne).

James — why oh why did you want to be the bearer of bad news? My kid’s dreams (from many years ago) are crushed.

I figured that the movie was set somewhere else (where the cost to get scenery setup and lower costs for the production crew).

I still would like to visit areas to the east of Montreal (like Newfie and PEI).

They actually built much of it by buying old buildings from around the island and putting them up in the village. It really feels authentic. The actors were great. All in all a fabulous time.

The “no neighbors” idea … not sure … actually … for a few day’s ok but on the long run??? Nope not my idea.

But that’s me, it’s the same reason why we now live in the centre of the city … great fun. All outgoing places near by, great theater, restaurants, bars, shops, etc and … seashore 15 min bicycle tour away … just great 🙂

It’s somewhat crowded overhere. That means our neighbors are like some 5 mtrs away. Okay there are some walls in between.

End yes we do wave on going to or from our cars
btw I go by train as a car-drive to my working place will take about 2 hours more then a train-ride, oh and that will be just a lowsy 15 km (about 10 miles)
Also we do say hello when we on our terras and they in their garden … inviting them over on sommerevenings to enjoy some nice wine or cognac … or come over we’re about to start the BBQ
ok that one is also to avoid complains 😉

by maecuff ·

In reply to Where would you like to live?

to live on the beach. It has to be a nice beach and be mostly clear of other humans. But not so remote that I couldn’t easily get to where the other humans are should I desire to do so. And it should have a nice little seafood restaurant within walking distance. Not fancy, but not a dive either. Oh and a coffee shop. And a book store. One that intuitively knows what I want to read next and keeps them on the counter for me. And they’re on sale. A liquor store that is either within walking distance or delivers. And all these establishments will be quirky and inviting, but the tourists won’t really know about them so they are never overrun with customers.

And I want to have a couple of nice neighbors (who aren’t TOO close) to hang out with when I feel like it. When I don’t feel like it, I want them to keep to themselves.

Is that too much to ask???

The first time I went skiing in the west, at Whistler, it felt amazing, since we were used to skiing on dense snow or ice. Machine groomed powder is when the machine goes over and breaks it up.

Summer in PEI was considerably cooler than Ontario – the breeze takes away the humidity. The only downside is that there really is only 6-8 weeks of ocean swimming weather. You can swim in a small lake in Ontario from May to September.

In reply to Where would you like to live?

And probably why I still live in Vancouver, its as good as it gets without really going anywhere.

There’s just so much to choose from in BC, it is nearly impossible to say, “THAT’S the one!” as right around the corner or next small town, there’s another beauty. Scenery is consistent, all of BC is truly stunning, but which house perched on a cliff or by a lake do you pick?

As for PLACES I’d like to live, obviously back to the Isle Of Wight, a 24/7 holiday there, but as for solitude and escape, this is the place of all places.

Even my old house in Port Hardy, Northern tip of Vancouver Island had absolutely incredible views that people will fly around the world to see.

Seriously these aren’t trips that require bush plane access (though we have that too), these are just ordinary places in BC, once you get outside of the Vancouver Lower Mainland and get a few hours away from the city. MOST of Bristish Columbia shares thiskind of scenery, North East West (south is the US) and that’s not even touching on the real getaways.

I think it would take several lifetimes to take it all in and decide where is best, I’ve been to most of the more common getways for years now, some many times and always find something new and unique to enjoy about it, never gets old, never gets to be too much. Even my home in the city has stunning views of Mount Baker in the US, and the North Shore mountains (here) and the winding Fraser River. I was driving through the area where Jaqui lives last week on my way to a ferry, I had to stop and take a picture of English Bay, which I have lived and been to millions of times over the years, its downtown Vancouver afterall. But it was SO stunning with the water almost purple and the sun setting to the west over Vancouver Island, truly send shivers down your spine when you realize how lucky you are to witness it all.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2397/2523840440_3a9aa598b9.jpg (not the picure I took but this is downtown by the city centre, I think Jaqui lives about 2 minutes to the east of this picture).

And a nice little getway home, I think I’ll telecommute from home! Damn what life that would be, I came close when living in Port Hardy but didn’t stay long enough, really regretting it now for sure.

I was not talking about Vancouver though, Vancouver’s just another city, though a very beautiful one at that.

However, with the rising problem between the UN and Red/Big Circle Boys, it is pretty easy for teh police to narrow down, unlike a major turf war between crypts and bloods which encompasses many thousands of members all over the USA.

They don’t even think its a turf war, just revenge killings. With several hundred new police brough on and a new task force dedicate dti just these two gangs, it shouldn’t be long before they have a grip on it again.

Either way, it is not a concern for most residents here, perhaps just the ones who don’t understand what its all about.

But if gang peopl want to kill other gang peple, let them, there’s not enough of them here to continue that for long and immigration is already locked down and on the hunt for new ones trying to move in.

I think its early enough to still be nipped in the bud for the most part.

Too many people are getting killed lately, because of mistaken identity or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It isn’t just Vancouver and BC, Toronto and Montreal are also dangerous. You just have to keep aware of your surroundings. Any place can be dangerous if you don’t stay aware.

You’re right, it isn’t Vancouver at all is it?

With all the recent targeted attacks, innocent bystanders have not been hit. I know, YET, but it is still a fact.

It is a serious problem though and one that is being addressed early on, unlike places such as Los Angeles or Miami where the numbers of members are so high that it is a futile effort to even try to keep up. That’s why the focus is now put back into giving kids in thos emetrolpolis’s something else to do or work towards other than being a gang member. Those that are already there are lost and the situation is not recoverable, until they no longer have new recruits and the numbers dwindle.

In reply to There was a 15 year-old shot on Boxing Day in Toronto

What that Canadian toilet where all the residents think they are New Yorkers?

Who cares if they ALL shoot each other? Nobody here would give a rat’s arse if Toronto is annexed by Pakistan tomorrow (it would only take a few more immigrants to succeed in that anyway).

As for the woman being shot, police think that is a line of targets being chosen, (people RELATED to and important to the other gang).

HEADLINE:
Young mother shot to death had links to gang

“METRO VANCOUVER – Nicole Marie Alemy, a young mother shot to death Monday in Surrey, had several gang links, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

The links include a connection with the UN gang – a violent drug gang based in the Fraser Valley. She was also a friend of Raphael Baldini, gunned down in a Guildford Town Centre parking lot Feb. 3.

Alemy’s husband, Koshan, faced gun charges in Coquitlam in 2007, but those were later stayed.”

“It has all the earmarks of a targeted hit,” he said.”

It’s very common in such shootings that a lover, wife or family member is targeted, it has far greater impact than killing the gang member himself.

Random, innocent bystander I suppose.

Yes it was shocking that it happened on the main downtown street during a very busy shopping rush. She was an innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet in a flight between two gangs of kids. One of the guys involved has already gone to trial

Just one minus … the temperature … fairly ok just not the nice dry heat for very long evenings on the beach watching the sun set under the palms swinging on/in your hammock.

Two questions. First, how are you doing? Haven’t seen you around for a little while. Also, what’s a moggie?

Noun. 1. A cat. Also spelt moggy.
2. A Morris Minor (car).

Information provided by NITS(tm) who hasn’t had much to do lately with the regular suspects all becoming so cosmopolitan.

Do you mean to really take up permanent residence???

by sleepin’dawg ·

In reply to Where would you like to live?

Or perhaps you meant only long visits. It might be hard giving up family and friends unless you were planning to make lots of return visits.

For myself, I’d like living on a sail boat, something in the 45 – 55 foot class. I’m in the process of looking for a new one right now. My present boat is great for several weeks at a time but it becomes a bit confining after two months. The present boat is a Crealock PH37 built back in the late 80s or early 90s

What I’m looking at :
http://www.bruckmannyachts.com/bruckmann50.htm

http://www.caborico.com/caborico/caborico56.html

http://www.nautorswan.com/swanlineproducts/tabid/295/SwanLine/53/boatId/3/boatVersionId/10/Default.aspx

http://www.oystermarine.com/index.php#id=37&ref=boat The 56′

As I said I’m looking and under the present economic conditions I might be able to negotiate a bargain but I’m not holding my breath. The Bruckmann is the one that really interests me but it sure as hell isn’t cheap. The reason I like this one is I’m partial to pilot houses when it gets cold and rainy. At a minimum, I’d want a dodger, not a colapsible one

I want to cruise the Med and the west coast up to Alaska. Who knows, what with global warming, I might be able to cruise the Northwest passage in a few years.

If you get the yacht, you can pop over to the UK and tie up in the marina in Beer and I’ll make you a sandwich. Then you can drift along to Sandwich, tie up and have a beer…

😀

Opening the Northwest Passage would certainly cut the miles down!

I have a boat and after almost 20 years, I call it a boat, not a yacht

by sleepin’dawg ·

In reply to Dawg. It’s your fantasy – or your reality if you make it so

Have made two crossings with it; the first in 94 the last one in 01. The first trip was around Ireland and then up to Norway to cruise a few of the fjords. Then down to the Med, stopping at several ports along the way to take in some things of historical interest. Left it in Malaga, Spain until the following year and returned to Canada via way of the Azores. The last trip was around the Baltic and then home via way of Iceland and Newfoundland. The first crossing to Ireland took 19 days but the return was done in 16 days to the Gulf of St, Lawrence. The 01 trip was 15 days each way, not counting the five weeks sailing the Baltic. The boat is 37 feet long and is quite capable but for long term live aboard, a bit cramped and confining after a while. I’m looking at the boats in those links but not necessarily new. Been checking out different brokerages in hopes of finding something that would fit the requirements.

The trouble is, I want a pilot house or an interior helm position. It can get damnwd uncomfortable when it blows hard and the temp dips below 10C degrees. The problem is that tooo many boats with pilot houses are mostly motor sailers, with the sailing part sort of an after thought. I want a boat that is primarily a sailer, with motoring capability. My present boat is like that but as I said a tad too small to serve for long term live aboard.

Who knows where I’ll end up dropping my hook but have never really sailed around the southeren part of the UK. It might prove to be interesting. I’m going to look into it. Understand though after cruising I want to tie up in someplace like Malaga or somewhere in the Italian Riviera, San Remo would be nice. I’d like to spend 6 – 8 months there and maybe try Malta and/or Cyprus later on. I loved Cyprus while I was there and enjoyed Malta on visit back in 89.

Dawg ]:)

could be invited over aswell 🙂 and for sure they’re happy to come over if you pay the passage 🙂

Living on a sail boat … brings it more likely that they’ll be visiting you special if you pick them up and sail accross to the med.

Oh, and don’t forget Neil’s idea of stopping over … speacial out of Sandwich it’s a short one to cross to Zandvoort/Amsterdam on the dutch coast 🙂

The beer’s will be on me 🙂
mmm, that’s not very dutch, but wth … I like the idea

It used to be a famous port but silted up a few hundred years ago and is now two miles inland! We’ll park Dawg’s yacht in Ramsgate for when we visit you.

Which we definitely will if you’re buying the beer!

last time I was over (1992 or about that time) there was still a navy-training centre with a small marina … It’s all gone now ?

Good old times when Adm. de Ruijter broke the chains on the Thames going to London … Sandwich was … mmm … even then small 🙂

I guess Ramsgate will do just fine 🙂

Looking forward to it … no prob. offer still stands or if you like a scotch d or s malt Whisky
(mind you no Whiskey, no offence to others but I like Whisky or cognac for that matter)

I was talkin to a friend of mine who is outside of London last night. Told me with my tech skills, a job wouldn’t be hard to get at the ?40k level in London.

Is that true? I heard jobs over there were dried up.

This might be my chance to escape the USA…Lord knows, I couldn’t get another job where I am now with the way the market is here in rural nothingness FL. lol

Hope you are doing well, btw…and your mom too.

Hope to see you in about…12 months. 🙂

finally got home and listened to your “spotlight”. Good interview. 🙂

I’ve not been active in the job market since April 2001 so I’m not really up to speed on what is available out there. Everything is slowing over here as people try and work out what is going on.

I’ll look around. Peermail me what you’d consider your skillset and I’ll feed it into some of the Job servers.

Neil 😀

As for next year, you have a place to stay in London if you need it.

Ma is fine and is muttering about “another trip to Florida” for this year. It all depends on what the Pound does relative to the Dollar!

• #2764745

thanks so much

i’ll get you a brief info set of my skills.

i just heard things different from different people. plus with the UK having gone partially into the EU, I figured the jobs might be shorter than before.

if I make London, i might take you up on that depending. i don’t know what my itenerary is yet. and, i got dozens of pub loving friends who want me to go drink pints and party all night.

glad to hear your ma is well. i hope the pound goes back to about $2 so you can make another journey this way.

maybe this time we can go somewhere a bit more lively. McDintons Irish Pub is in Tampa and much more…erm…of a “social watering hole”.

But then there’s a quiet little place in Seminole, FL (near the beaches…just inland a little) called The London Bus. it actually looked (last time I was in there) like more of a traditional pub.

Just let me know if you are coming. If so, I will do research , go see what is open, find nice places for you to enjoy things, and show up if you would like company.

Well, as long as it’s not May of this year, or February of next year. I’ll be on vacation then myself. :^0

Thanks again, and thanks for the interview comment…Sonja really is the one who put tons of effort into it. I give her the glory of it, as well as having made it fun for me. I get nervous about doing interviews, and she was totally cool about it.

But I guess you know that, cause you did one too!!! :^0

Cheers 🙂
