What can I say, all the above are good suggestions. But I don't think know specific type of programms is important. The most important thing is to know the basic concept of how programming works. Object Oriented Programming (OOP), I believe is the first most important thing you need to thoroghly understand before you go to any programming fields. I don't have as much experiences as above people. But, I do experienced that once you know the concept of OOP, no programming is hard to learn.
So far I know, SQL, SQL/PLUS, C++, VisualBasic, Java, Assembly, ASP, some Perl, CGI, Java-Script, CSS, HTML, TurboPascal, and many other which i learned in a very short time by simply apply OOP concept. So one good advice is to completely understand OOP concept. I have spent 2 years in this field already. Now no programming is difficult for me.

I advise you to learn the basics and concepts
of c and c++ and don't go very deep into it.
Then learn java which is the most sort of in the market today. Then you will be having a great future as a programmer.

Do you really want to program? In a PC?, in client/server model? what is your objective? Then the languages will appear and how long will depend on you.

I would study methodologies as well as coding languages - for example, Unified Modeling Language (UML). I'm glad you liked the Perl class. IMHO, I think Perl will become the de-facto scripting language in the increasingly heterogeneous environments that we are moving toward. You know, you can do everything from manipulating databases to administering large NT networks, to creating GUI interfaces in Perl. But, you will probably find that you need to know a lot of different languages.

I have heard many people talk about how Visual C++ is the best job earner. I once had time to chat to one, he bought the book "Visual C++ 6 in 21 days", and it took him 6 months.
Good Luck!
