Who would like
Lockedby zlitocook · about 17 years, 5 months ago
Help from some one that has been around awhile?
I am offering mentoring for new people in the IT field. I am not a guru or a great IT person but I can help you with general questions and how to’s.
I will not laugh or joke about your questions.
I will post simple answers and help with the simple questions.
You need a place to ask and learn about the computer or the system you use.Topic is locked -

But usually only when I’m typing the reply. I don’t giggle in the actual post unless I’m supposed to. 😀

Very Humble

No need to be a guru with a string of degrees, so long as the answers help to make it works, just like this private forum in Singapore – http://www.technog.net/forum where novices gather and help one another.

Don’t be like that! :p

Some of us really appreciate the offer.
Personally, I’ve just added you to my “people I can ask silly questions to – who won’t think I’m stupid” list…. and as there are only four people on there, you’re a welcome addition!
Yes, ok, I work in IT, but I specialise in security of information. Which means that I have, for the most part, kept myself semi-technical; mainly in order to be able to see both points of view – technical usage, and day to day usage. So there are some things that people think I should know that I don’t…. and vice versa. I may be able to *talk* a good network, but believe me, I could never put one together.
Personally, I know that I don’t know enough. I never will. Considering how fast this tech is moving, I probably don’t stand a chance – but it’s fun trying.
Thanks for the offer zlito; I really appreciate it…
have to warn you though – watch out for some weird, wonderful, oddball and downright silly questions in the not so distant future!!!

Perhaps the best way to help is to stay the course
by breadtrk · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Who would like
By continuing to post suggestions and answers in the forums you are helping the most people that way, everybody gets to be helped, newbie?s like me and sometimes even dinosaurs like Hal.
A quick look at you posting history certainly tells me that you have much to offer the community, why share your knowledge with just a few when many can benefit?
Everybody always does a quick search for answers before posting stupid questions anyway, right?

Cannot Download from Tech Republic
by nontechy · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Who would like
I hope your offer for help is still open.
When I try to download an article, using IE 6, from Tech Republic on my home PC (using Windows XP Pro), IE opens a new window with the message: “The page cannot be displayed.”
The downloaded site (shown in Address) in the new window seems to always begin with ” i.i.com.* ”
Also, the same message (cannot display) appears within the (where you click “download”) page where there are links to other sites.
Other downloads seem to work fine from ZDnet, but not Tech Republic.I’ve tried adjusting the “Internet Options” settings (Security, Advanced) and the Pop-up settings, but it still does not work (cannot download from Tech Republic).
I also changed the settings to match those on my work PC because downloading from Tech Republic there works fine.Any suggestions? zlito?

Did not work. Is clearing cookies same as deleting?
by nontechy · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Try this
I must be doing something wrong. Clearing cookies did not work, if I did it correctly. Is “clearing” the same as “deleting” cookies in Tools/Internet Options/ (Gen. tab) Delete Cookies?
I also did “Run: %temp%” and deleted files, as well as deleting files in the folder Temporary Internet Files. -

If you logged off, cleared (yes, deleted) cookies, and logged back on, it should have worked.
Just noticed that you posted the URL for the page that could not display as “i.i.com”. Don’t know how you are getting there if you are clicking on a download link at TR; the URL for TR Downloads should be http://downloads.techrepublic.com.com/.
You might want to verify your DHCP service or check your Hosts file to see if there are issues there.

Maybe it’s my Internet Options settings.
by nontechy · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Has worked well in the past
This is the full URL.
http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tr/downloads/home/windows_xp_services_that_can_be_disabled.pdf
When download is clicked, it goes there. It is what it is. Thanks for your time, Nick.
If you or someone else wants to explain how to do the following, I will do it:
1)verify your DHCP service (it is set to automatic),
2)check your Hosts file. (for what?)
I’ll try changing Internet Options by trial and error to see if that solves the problem. -

Interesting
by nicknielsen · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Maybe it’s my Internet Options settings.
Disregard the checking of DHCP setup and hosts file; I jumped the gun.
Viewed the link; it worked for me, but opened a new window. Is a new window opening for you? If not, this may be a pop-up issue.
TR usually opens downloaded files in a new window. Do you have full pop-up blocking enabled? If you aren’t allowing new windows, are you allowing new tabs? Try changing your settings to allow TR to open new windows and see what happens.

RE: pop-ups, tabs
by nontechy · about 17 years, 4 months ago
In reply to Interesting
Yes, a new window opens.
Pop-up blocking is on, but all TR sites are allowed:
– techrepublic.com
– *techrepublic.com
– downloads.techrepublic.com
– i.i.com.com
How do you allow tabs and new tabs? I used to have them, but they’ve been gone for awhile. Could not find any topics in Help.

Hey ‘zlito’

In reply to Who would like
I thought you were doing that, for a while. You’re not a new guy around here. I’ve seen you a time or two in the old Q/A. I think you confused a few with your offer. Do you mean as a real ‘Mentor’ that would be a little different (I think ?:|) That could come in handy for a few new students I’ve seen in here. I’m sure it will be welcome. Give it some time.
Question, Did you just retire? or just found your-self with too much time? I’m retired and I still don’t have time to do that. -d-

You can make time

I am a police officer IT person. I’m about ready to start testing for security certs, also teaching myself Computer Forensics all the while attending Sewanee Theology School. You can make time, no one is too busy to help some one else.

Ok, I agree

In reply to You can make time
Granted that you don’t know me, so I do see your point. In fact by me personally, it is what I do do. People who do know me know that. Which is why I realy don’t have (more) time. And NO time for me. People keep telling me the exact opposite, that I should take more time for me. (but do I listen? na, never did.)
In the context of Zlito’s post, maybe I should have than said I wish I had MORE time to that More.
But Thanks for pointing that out. -d -

It got a little busy at work.
A question: have you completed your profile? I don’t know if they fixed it with the new site, but the old site used to require that you had entries in all fields in your profile, even if the data was bogus. Try completing your profile, then downloading.
