Best of luck with this one Pally

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to Not really,

Sounds Nasty. I don't think that XP Mode will help but then again that's just because I've never had any luck with it on anything but very common programs and this one doesn't sound overly hopeful.

Just a thought though have you looked at the Keyboard Setting in the old system. It may not be set to US Keyboard but something else which only affects a couple of keys.

Though to be perfectly honest I think that the Clipboard isn't running or is now called something else which is what the problem here is, but it's worth a try just in case some strange Keyboard setting was being used.

Unfortunately I've not had to look that closely with 7 so I really have no idea.

I don't think XP mode will do much either,

but it's easy to try. I doubt it's a keyboard setting; I'm the one who would have had to set it up.

But if it was a key redirect,

would the behavior on the XP system apply to all apps, not just this legacy one?

is sending to the operating system, I say that because some apps already have a key redirect for that and some other keys built in, so the OS redirect doesn't happen until it hits the OS. ****, it may even be the app with the built in redirect is redirecting AFTER the OS, it's hard to say without opening up the code for each app and seeing how they're doing it.

Any app can be written to redirect any key or command, it's all a matter of what you want to do and take the trouble to do. The keys you mention are just function keys you can assign tasks to in the app, it's just they've been assigned certain tasks in the BIOS or OS in the past and are now assigned differently - the same way the old three fingered salute works different in Windows now.

I know of apps that will ALWAYS show evey damn letter key as upper case, no matter how you type it in the first place as the app redirects all character key commands to convert to the lower case ones.

Oh, I'm sure it's in the app,

but that means it isn't the fault of the Billy Gates and his Redmond Boys.

OH Pally I must thank you for supporting my Mother

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to Col, with all respect due ...

But at 84 she's not really that old, though by choice she is completely computer illiterate.

Telling her to use the Start Button on her XP computer to turn the computer on and off is way beyond her comprehension, she insists that there should be a different switch to turn the Bloody Thing Off. Doesn't matter that her TV only has the 1 switch to turn it on and off the computer needs to be different.

Don't you just love it when M$ breaks something that worked well in the past? But the only thing to do here most likely is to go through the entire process all over again teaching her how to use 7. Lovely Idea isn't it?

I wish you well as Mommy drives me NUTS you have my sincerest condolences, HONEST.

Other than Remoting in, which is probably not an option, or going over to her, again probably not an option, those are the only way that I've found possible to help people like that but overall I generally just do it myself for her it saves me so much time and her the effort of not wanting to understand anything.

She insists computers are stupid but the computerized Photocopier is brilliant. Best of luck I'm sure you are going to need it.
